State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat on Wednesday said that the government is working to make the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) and the country's film industry as a whole self reliant, reducing their dependency on the government.

"I think no industry should depend on subsidies, as the subsidy-enjoying industry always depends on the government. Therefore, we want to create an environment so that FDC and our film industry can be self-reliant," he said.

The state minister said this while addressing a discussion at the FDC in the city's Tejgaon area this afternoon, marking the National Film Day, BSS reports.

Film actor Ferdous Ahmed, MP, spoke at the function as the special guest, with FDC Managing Director Nuzhat Yeasmin in the chair.

Arafat said there is no stronger media than cinema to present any country with dignity in the global arena and added, "If we want to present our country with dignity before the world through cinema, we have to produce quality films."

Noting that there is a necessity to create a favourable environment to make quality films, he said, "I will try my level best to create such an environment."

Referring to the Prime Minister's instructions over the development of the country's film industry, the state minister said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given me some instructions regarding films. She directed for establishing Cineplex at the district level, which will be able to be self-reliant".

He emphasised creating a way of earning to make the film industry self-reliant and said, "I myself have enthusiasm to work on Bangladeshi films. I think if we can create the environment, everything will be done automatically, and we could take forward our culture through the films."

Arafat added, "We have to establish our dominance in the film industry in South Asia and try to go beyond it."

Pointing out the challenges posed by technological advancement in the film industry, he said, "We have to think about converting the challenges into opportunities innovatively and create scopes to go forward."

Noted playwright M Hamid presented the keynote paper in the discussion while film director Dr Matin Rahman and Editors Guild President Abu Musa Debu spoke, among others.

Earlier, the state minister inaugurated the National Film Day programme by releasing balloons and led a rally on the FDC premises.

Idhika Paul made her silver screen debut with Himel Ashraf's "Priyotoma" and gained immense fame for her role as Iti in the film. Her bubbly and spontaneous performance alongside Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan, won her love from Bangladeshi fans as they recognise her as 'Priyotoma'.

Although Shakib Khan starrer "Rajkumar" gained immense fame after its release last Eid, it has struggled to generate much buzz lately with its songs or posters.

In an effort to promote the movie, Idhika Paul posted a status urging her fans to have faith in "Rajkumar" and to watch the film this Eid.

"This Eid, 'Rajkumar' will hit theatres. As your beloved 'Priyotoma,' I extend my congratulations and best wishes to the entire team behind this film, including producer Arshad Adnan, director Himel Ashraf bhai, and, of course, Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan," read her post.

"It is hope that bridges the gap between good and better, sustaining us each day; expectation is an enduring sentiment. With that sentiment in mind, let us rally behind this film. Let 'Rajkumar' triumph and win the hearts of all. As your 'Priyotoma,' that is my heartfelt wish for you all."

Notably, American actress Courtney Coffey stars alongside Shakib Khan in "Rajkumar", produced by Versatile Media. The latest reports indicate that the film will be screened in over a hundred theatres across the country from Eid day. Additionally, there are plans for its release in the United States, Canada, and Dubai.

Several movies are set to premiere this Eid, yet the complete list of hall venues hasn't been disclosed by the producers. Star Cineplex has recently unveiled its Eid week schedule, featuring eight new films across seven of its branches.

Helmed by Mishuk Moni, "Deyaler Desh" has got the highest number of shows among the eight movies. 17 shows will be screened daily across all branches of Cineplex of the film. Sariful Razz and Shobnom Bubly have played the protagonists in it.

The movie trailer depicts Razz and Bubly, two working-class individuals deeply in love, until tragedy strikes with Bubly's sudden demise. Following her death, Razz chooses to live alongside her lifeless body. The trailer and accompanying song have sparked significant debates on social media, ever since their release.

Himel Ashraf's "Rajkumar" and Gias Uddin Selim's "Kajol Rekha" received 13 shows each. Additionally, "Omar" obtained 11 shows, "Mona: Jinn 2" secured seven, "Meghna Konnya" and "Green Card" each attained two, while "Ahare Jibon" was scheduled for three shows.

Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Senior Manager of Media and Marketing at Star Cineplex, holds reservations about releasing numerous movies during a single Eid, despite the decision to release eight films this Eid. He believes that rather than focusing on releases on Eid, films should be distributed consistently throughout the year.

As the Eid festivities and celebrations are in full swing in Bangladesh, superstar Shakib Khan's much-anticipated film "Rajkumar" is hitting a milestone by securing screenings in a whopping 127 theatres across the country.

With tickets selling out for the next two days at the country's most prominent theatre, Star Cineplex, the anticipation for the grand reception of the film is palpable. Apart from Shakib Khan, the film features American actress Courtney Coffey, along with Tariq Anam Khan and Dilara Zaman, amongst others.

For over two decades, Eid festivities have been incomplete without the anticipation and excitement for Shakib Khan's blockbuster releases. Each year, audiences eagerly await his cinematic gifts, turning Eid into a celebration not just of cultural and religious significance but also a cinematic event.

Following the phenomenal success of "Priyotoma" last Eid, the superstar is once again poised to captivate audiences with his latest blockbuster, "Rajkumar". With bated breath, he looks forward to the accolades and the warmth of his fans' reception, hoping to replicate, if not surpass the joy and success that "Priyotoma" brought to many during the festive season.

With the joy of Eid, hope and anticipation for his film, Shakib Khan gets candid about his Eid celebration plans in an exclusive interview with The Daily Star.

How's your Eid going so far?

The celebration of Eid is unfolding pretty much as it does every year for me. Like every year, I began the day having some delicious paeesh (Bengali traditional dessert) made by my mother, then headed to offer prayers. I have plans to spend some quality time with my sons. Of course, I will be keeping an eye on the film updates in the afternoon. It's all about enjoying the day with loved ones and exchanging greetings with friends and well-wishers. So, I will try to catch up with my friends and family as well.

Your film 'Rajkumar' is generating a lot of buzz. Why should people catch this film during Eid?

"Rajkumar" is more than just a film; it's a cinematic experience. We've put our hearts into making it the best it can be. The film showcases stunning locations, both in Bangladesh and America. Audiences will be captivated by the scenic beauty on screen. We've left no stone unturned in ensuring it's a top-notch production.

A record-breaking 11 new films are hitting the screens this Eid. What's your take on such a large number of releases?

Well, the decision to release a film ultimately lies with the producers, who invest their resources into it. But one has to consider whether releasing this many films will be financially viable. If producers end up in debt, it affects the industry as a whole. As for me, I prefer not to comment on the number of releases; it's a personal choice for each filmmaker, is what I feel.

Your filmography seems to be getting more selective. What's the reason behind this approach?

I believe in quality over quantity when it comes to films. That's why I'm taking on fewer projects each year. Sure, it's a financial hit for me personally, but I want to focus on doing meaningful work. Take "Rajkumar", for example. After "Priyotoma", I wanted to ensure the same level of excellence. So, I'm being picky about the projects I take on.

Do you have anything to say to your fans and audience?

Through my work, I aim to bring honour to our country and Bengali cinema on the global stage. I hope "Rajkumar" resonates with Bengali-speaking audiences worldwide. With your love and blessings, I hope to go far. Remember to cherish this Eid with your loved ones with Bangla cinema, and thank you for your unwavering support.

Actress Shobnom Bubly has been in the spotlight during the Eid season with her appearances on Nagorik TV. The first episode of the show "Bola Na Bola" was recently broadcast, where she openly shared insights into her personal experiences involving Shakib Khan, Apu Biswas, and their children.

During the program hosted by Kamruzzaman Babu, Bubly addressed various controversial questions with thoughtful responses. She discussed her roles in the movies "Maya" and "Deyaler Desh", highlighting the unique design and captivating scenes in "Deyaler Desh" that have piqued audience interest.

When asked about the perceived competition between Shakib Khan's "Rajkumar" and "Deyaler Desh", Bubly clarified, "There is no competition here. Naturally, films starring actors like Shakib Khan will receive more attention. I think everyone should watch all the movies."
Regarding her preference between the looks in "Priyatoma" and "Rajkumar", Bubly expressed her fondness for "Priyatoma"s' look.

Addressing questions about her relationship with Shakib Khan, Bubly responded, "I don't know if I have the same love as before, but I love him. There is some pride involved. Misunderstandings arise because we don't discuss things between us; he reacts based on what others say."

In response to inquiries about her plans and whether she would consider marriage or relationships in the future, Bubly asserted, "There will never be any room for love or relationships in my life. I am just focused on my work and giving importance to my child. This decision will never change in the future."

Bubly also addressed rumors surrounding her marriage and clarified, "Shakib took care of Moharana soon after our marriage. We got married in Pubail. Close directors and producers were present there. Whatever rumors are being spread have no basis."

However, Shakib Khan's recent unveiling of 'Ami Ekai Rajkumar' and his heartfelt message dedicating the song to his fans, who are adorably called 'Shakibians', made this song a bit special.

In the song released via Shakib Khan's official Facebook page last Friday at 7:00pm, Shakib, dressed in a flamboyant fit, dances in the video alongside hundreds of dancers surrounded by a multicolored designed set. Notably, Ashok Raja is credited to have choreographed the song.

Shakib's charm is undeniable in the music video, and it is also a testament to his understanding of what his fans expect from him.

Although the previous two songs from the film couldn't garner much fanfare, this new song has been the talk of the town since its release. Shamim Hasan voiced 'Ami Ekai Rajkumar' which was penned by Ferari Forhad and composed by Emon Chowdhury.

Star Cineplex takes down three Eid films amidst intense competition

1713219997208.png

Out of 11 films that were released during the festival, some are performing well, while others have not met expectations from the producers.

Three films fell off from the Eid race in the country's premier multiplex, Star Cineplex. On the third and fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr respectively, Kazi Hayat directorial film "Green Card" and Chotku Ahmed's government-granted film "Ahare Jibon" were taken down. However, both movies are still running shows at Lion Cinemas.

Fuad Chowdhury directorial "Meghna Konnya" is another film was taken down from the multiplex. The film stars Qazi Nawshaba Ahmed, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Shatabdi Wadud, Samonty Das Shoumi, and Sajjad Hossain, among others.

According to the associates of Star Cineplex, the films could not sustain business at the halls.

Many involved in the film industry have expressed their opinions about the release of movies during Eid. Some argued that releasing 11 movies during Eid was not a good decision at all. It was a bad business decision to release more than four films during Eid. Some also criticised the release of three movies starring Sariful Razz during Eid, stating that it would have been better for the audience if only one of his movies was released during the festival.
