Visitors are streaming in to see the famous buffalo named Donald Trump at the National Zoo in Mirpur, Dhaka. These inquisitive crowds were seen on Thursday afternoon, the day of Eid-ul-Azha.

The national zoo was relatively less crowded on Eid. Even so, those who came to the zoo made sure to stop in front of enclosure “L-07” at least once to see “Donald Trump.” While other enclosures at the zoo had fewer visitors, there was a constant crowd in front of Donald Trump’s enclosure.

The zoo authorities have also hung an identification sign in front of the enclosure. It reads, “Albino Buffalo (Donald Trump).”

Azmira Akter was standing with her parents and sister looking at Donald Trump. Azmira, who came from Rupnagar, told Prothom Alo that she had learned from the news that Donald Trump had been brought to the zoo. They came specifically to see the buffalo. Azmira said, “It looks just like it did on mobile videos. It really does resemble Trump.”

The buffalo had been raised at Rabeya Agro Farm in Paikpara, Narayanganj, owned by Ziauddin Mridha. Ziauddin had earlier told the media that his brother named the buffalo after the US president because of its “extraordinary hair.”

Mehedi Hasan, who came from the Mirpur-2 of the capital with his wife, son, and nephew, was also looking at the buffalo named Donald Trump. He said they had come to the zoo for Eid celebrations. They already knew that the buffalo named Donald Trump had been brought there. After entering the zoo, they asked people around until they found the enclosure. He also believes that the albino buffalo bears some resemblance to Trump.

A group of tourist police was also seen in front of the albino buffalo’s enclosure. Among them was Bishnu Broto Mallik, inspector of the Dhaka Region Tourist Police. He told Prothom Alo that because there were more visitors in front of the enclosure of the buffalo named Donald Trump, tourist police were on duty there for visitors’ safety.

Md. Atikur Rahman, curator of the Bangladesh National Zoo, told Prothom Alo that Donald Trump was brought to the zoo yesterday at 11:00 pm. Since this morning, crowds of visitors have gathered in front of the buffalo’s enclosure. “It is a new animal, which is why people are crowding there,” he said.

The curator mentioned that when “Donald Trump” was unloaded from the vehicle, it appeared that the buffalo had suffered a minor scratch. He said the scratch was very small and treatment had already been provided, adding that it would heal soon.

The hair and eyes of this albino buffalo resemble those of Donald Trump, the President of the United States. The buffalo had been raised at Rabeya Agro Farm in Paikpara, Narayanganj, owned by Ziauddin Mridha. Ziauddin had earlier told the media that his brother named the buffalo after the US president because of its “extraordinary hair.”

Throughout the month of May, people from areas near Dhaka flocked in groups to Ziauddin Mridha’s farm to see Donald Trump. Prothom Alo first published a report about the buffalo on 12 May. Reports on it were also published in various other media outlets. Later, the buffalo with wavy pink hair attracted attention not only in local media but also in international outlets including The Telegraph, The Independent, and news agencies Agence France-Presse and Reuters. Various international broadcasters also aired videos of the buffalo.

Ziauddin Mridha had sold the buffalo to Moniruzzaman of Zinjira, Keraniganj. Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, on Monday afternoon, Moniruzzaman brought the buffalo from the Narayanganj farm to his home in Keraniganj. At that time, the buffalo was given a grand farewell from the farm with a red carpet, colorful smoke effects, and royal decorations.

Yesterday afternoon, on the day before Eid, police brought the buffalo from Moniruzzaman’s house following intervention by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The globally viral buffalo was then taken to the Bangladesh National Zoo.

A bill has been introduced in the US Congress seeking to make both Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha official federal holidays, reviving a push that failed to gather enough support when it was first tabled in 2024.

Democratic Congresswoman Grace Meng of New York and Indiana Congressman Andre Carson jointly introduced the bill on Wednesday, reports bdnews24.com.

Speaking on Eid-ul-Azha while extending greetings, Meng, who represents the Jamaica-Flushing area of Queens, home to a large Bangladeshi community, said recognising the two major Muslim religious festivals as federal holidays was long overdue and pledged to continue pushing for the bill until it becomes law.

She added that they feel “fortunate” to reintroduce the bill.

The bill, numbered HR-8755 and known as the Eid Day Act, was first introduced in 2024 with the backing of several other members of Congress, but failed to win enough support to go to a vote.

In last November's election, New York City elected Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim-American mayor in the city's 450-year history.

Muslim Americans have also become a significant voting bloc in several states, including Michigan, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

A number of states and cities have already moved to give Muslim students and workers the day off on Eid.

New York City made both Eid days school holidays back in 2015, while Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Virginia are among the states where Muslim students and employees can already take Eid as a day off.

If the latest bill passes into law, it would fulfil a longstanding demand of more than 9 million Muslims across the United States.

Much has shifted in American politics and public life since then.

There was a crowd of visitors standing in front of Block L-7 of the National Zoo in Mirpur of the capital. Pushing through the crowd, some tried to get closer, while others stood back taking photos and recording videos on their mobile phones. A father lifted his young son onto his shoulders and placed a mobile phone in the boy’s hands. The boy was trying his best to record a video.

All this was happening today, Saturday at around 2:30 pm. The animal that the father and son were filming at the zoo was the viral albino buffalo. The animal has already become known in the country and abroad as “Donald Trump.” Every day, visitors gather in that section of the zoo just to get a glimpse of the buffalo.

Later, speaking to the father and son, it was learnt that the father’s name was Abu Sufian. He came to the zoo with his son Safwan. Sufian said they live in the Philippines with their family. They came to the country for Eid-ul-Azha. After celebrating Eid at their village home in Joypurhat, they returned to Dhaka on Friday. They are currently staying in Dhanmondi at his sister-in-law’s house. From there, he brought his son to the zoo.

Sufian told Prothom Alo, “My son saw the buffalo ‘Donald Trump’ on television. Since then, he kept insisting on coming to the zoo. As soon as we returned to Dhaka, I brought him here. He was very happy to see the buffalo up close.”

Safwan was also very excited. He said, “I feel very happy.”

The level of public interest around the buffalo was extraordinarily high. Some visitors came with their families and were taking photos, while others were showing the animal to their children. Many visitors said they had come after hearing about the buffalo “Donald Trump” through social media and various news outlets.

Third-grade student Sabiha Islam came to the zoo with her uncle Delwar Hossain from the Begunbari of Aminbazar. But simply seeing it from a distance was not satisfying for her. So she asked for her uncle’s mobile phone and went to record a video of the buffalo.

However, she then found that there was no free space left on the phone. Not giving up, Sabiha herself deleted some old photos and videos from the phone. After clearing storage in two steps, she was finally able to record a video of the buffalo “Donald Trump.”

Sabiha said that ever since she saw news of the famous buffalo on television, she had wanted to see it up close. “I saw the buffalo ‘Donald Trump’ on TV. Then I told my uncle that I want to see Trump. So he brought me here,” said Sabiha.

However, seeing the buffalo from a distance and recording a video did not fully satisfy her. She wanted to go inside the block and see the animal closer. She looked at her uncle and said, “Uncle, let’s go inside.”

Her uncle Delwar Hossain said, “We can’t go there.” Then, pointing to two police officers on duty inside the enclosure, Sabiha asked, “Those people over there, why did they go inside?”

Her uncle explained, “They are police, so they were able to go closer.” Hearing this, little Sabihah quickly replied, “I will also become a police officer when I grow up. Then can’t I go inside too?” Her question made her uncle laugh.

Zoo overcrowded
During this Eid holiday, an overwhelming crowd of visitors has been seen at the National Zoo in Mirpur, Dhaka. This afternoon the traffic congestion had already begun nearly three-quarters of a kilometer away from the zoo, starting from Rainkhola Mor. Many people were seen walking toward the zoo with their families.

At the entrance, a long queue was seen in front of the ticket counters. Parents were waiting with their children, holding their hands or carrying them on their shoulders. Some stood under umbrellas, while others took shelter in the shade of trees. Some family members had gone to collect tickets.

Almost all pathways inside the zoo were bustling with visitors.

The crowd in front of various animal enclosures at the zoo was strikingly large. Some visitors were taking photos in front of the tiger enclosure, while others were busy observing lions, elephants, or giraffes. Children were seen curiously watching different animals. Some even stretched out their hands, trying to call the animals closer.

Many people were also seen taking selfies with family and friends. Several families were resting in the shade of trees, while others sat on mats or blankets spread out on the ground. Some were spending time in small groups on the green grass. A few had even brought food from home and were picnicking there.

However, the largest crowd had gathered around the "Donald Trump" enclosure. Everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of the albino buffalo.
