Pakistan's army chief General Asim Munir will be promoted to the rank of field marshal, the prime minister's office said in a statement on Tuesday, the first time in almost 60 years that a general has been elevated to the role.

His promotion, which was approved by the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, comes days after the country's worst military conflict with India in nearly three decades.

It came "in recognition of the strategic brilliance and courageous leadership that ensured national security and decisively defeated the enemy," Sharif said in a statement from his office.

A security official said field marshal was a ceremonial five-star rank that usually signifies extraordinary leadership and wartime achievement.

The promotion is the first since Pakistani dictator General Ayub Khan made himself a field marshal in 1965, he said.

With the new ceremonial rank, he said, Munir will remain the army chief.

The cabinet also decided to extend the service of Pakistan Air Force chief Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu after his service term expires, the PM's office said.

It did not say for how long Sidhu's job would be extended, nor did it say whether Munir's promotion to the rank of field marshal will mean that he has no retirement date.

Munir started his job as army chief in November 2022.

A parliamentary legal amendment extended Munir's term to five years in November 2023, from the usual three years for the role of army chief.

"It is not individual, but an honour for the armed forces of Pakistan and the whole nation," Munir said in a statement issued by the army public relations wing.

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has taken a swipe at Army chief Gen Asim Munir, saying he should have given himself the title of “king” instead of field marshal.

In a post on X, he also said Pakistan is currently governed by “jungle law”, Indian broadcaster NDTV reports.

Imprisoned since August 2023, Khan dismissed rumours of an ongoing deal between him and the military, saying: “No deal has taken place, nor is any dialogue underway.”

However, he openly invited the military establishment for talks if it genuinely cared about Pakistan’s future.

Gen Munir was promoted to the rank of field marshal on Tuesday for his role in the recent conflict with India, becoming the second military officer in Pakistan’s history after Ayub Khan to receive the title.

“The country is facing external threats, a surge in terrorism, and an economic crisis. We must unite,” he said.

He also warned the Shehbaz Sharif government about fresh attacks from India and asked them to be prepared.

“When you send the message that the bigger the thief, the higher the office they’ll hold — you bury justice.”

Pakistan’s moral and constitutional framework has been destroyed over the past three years, he added.

He continued, “If you claim to be against terrorism, then do not drop bombs on the homes of your own people.”

He claimed to have received reports of drone attacks in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and instructed the provincial government to formally protest and act promptly to halt the strikes.

I heard that PAF managed to down 3 RAFALs, 1 SU-30 MKI and 1 MIG-29 of IAF. If this is true then I must say PAF's performance was superb
wish that were true saif bhai.......Now the Indians are compiling our losses and issuing detailed itemized reports of our min loss.

Obviously he missed those 600 turkiya L/M's in his total and also forgot to mention the 56 A-100/ 200 fattah/ nasr relabeled junk arty rockets we wasted in the totals.

I wonder how much India lost in launching dozens of Brahmos/ Scalps/ S-400's/ Akash/ Bharrack and IDF Harpys/ Harops/ Hammers etc......

Somebody needs to do a report on Indian expenditure too:

Indian victory didn't come free of cost!......Brahmos/ scalp/ S-400 don't come cheap bhai.......

Anyone who wanna do the min research/ expenditure estimate of India? Including operational and day to day operational readiness expenses please do, and I bet the totals goin be close to several billion dollars.

Fighting wars ain’t cheap folks.
