the DRDO—with its large cadre of talented scientists and a network of 50 laboratories—backed by the production facilities of 16 defence public sector undertakings and ordnance factories. For seven decades, this ecosystem has churned out “indigenous” hardware, fostering a national illusion of self-sufficiency. In truth, much of it involves merely assembling imported kits or licensed production with royalty payments, masking a deep import dependence.

Despite decades of licensed manufacturing and overhauls, HAL’s engine divisions failed to grasp the essentials of metallurgy, precision engineering, tooling, or machining. This reflects institutional inertia and a myopic vision that lacks the drive for technological independence.

At this point they should start with a new program from scratch. This piece of garbage has cost them so much in money and embarrassment over the last thirty years and they are still throwing away good money after bad. Pathetic.

Indian Army plans to buy 850 kamikaze drones
New Age Desk 21 December, 2025, 01:39

The Indian Army is set to procure 850 kamikaze drones worth about Rs 2,000 crore as part of lessons learned from a recent military operation, defence sources said.Campus bites newsletter

The proposal is at an advanced stage and is likely to be approved soon by the Defence Acquisition Council, which is expected to meet later this month, reported The Economic Times.

The drones will be acquired under fast-track procedures and sourced from indigenous manufacturers.

Also known as loitering munitions, the drones will come with launchers and are intended to strengthen the capabilities of all three defence services, including special forces. The Army already operates loitering munitions from multiple sources and plans to induct around 30,000 such systems in the near future.

Under the plan, each infantry battalion will have a dedicated Ashni platoon responsible for operating drones for strikes on enemy positions as well as for counterinsurgency operations.

According to defence officials, drones were extensively used by the Indian Army during a recent operation targeting terror infrastructure across the border. Several targets were hit on the first day of the operation, launched in response to the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people.

The drones were later deployed against opposing military positions along the border, causing heavy damage to infrastructure and resulting in significant casualties.
