Jordan has announced a general amnesty for undocumented migrant workers under certain conditions, according to a statement issued by the Bangladesh embassy in Amman on Wednesday.

In a post on its verified Facebook page, the embassy said that undocumented migrant workers would be allowed to return to their home countries, continue working in Jordan without paying fines and change employers under the amnesty programme.

The embassy also said that people who entered Jordan on tourist visas would be eligible to apply for work permits.

It said that detailed information about the amnesty would be available later this week and advised migrants to remain cautious to avoid fraud.

The embassy urged Bangladeshi migrants to seek assistance from the mission in availing themselves of any benefits under the programme.

New Age tried to contact officials of the Bangladesh embassy in Amman for further details, but they could not be reached.

Officials at the foreign affairs ministry in Dhaka also said that they had yet to receive detailed information about the initiative.

According to the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, about 250,000 Bangladeshis have migrated to Jordan over the past two decades, most of them women employed in the garment sector.

Official BMET data show that Jordan accounts for about 1.69 per cent of Bangladesh’s annual overseas employment, making it one of the leading destinations for female migrant workers from the country.

Migration experts said that if implemented as announced, the amnesty could provide relief to undocumented Bangladeshi workers facing legal and employment-related difficulties in the West Asian country.

However, they said that workers should wait for official procedures and guidance from the Jordanian authorities and the Bangladesh embassy before taking any action.
