Senior Russian official in Tehran to deepen security ties
Agence France-Presse . Moscow 06 August, 2024, 00:26

Russia's national Security Council secretary on Monday arrived for a visit to Tehran, news agencies reported, amid fears of a wider war in the region following last week's killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.

Sergei Shoigu, Russia's ex-defence minister, was set to meet senior military and security officials as well as new President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in a wide range of spheres including security, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The visit was on the invitation of his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran's local Tasnim news agency reported.

It said the visit had the aim of 'strengthening interactions, the examination of regional and international issues, and bilateral political security relations'.

Russia has 'strongly condemned' the killing of Haniyeh, the political leader of the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas, in Tehran last month.

Pezeshkian has described Russia as a 'valued strategic ally'.

Shoigu was removed as defence minister in May in a major shake-up of Russia's military leadership, becoming secretary of the Security Council instead.

The visit to one of Russia's key political allies underlines Shoigu's continued significant role.

As defence minister, he visited Iran in September last year, while his predecessor at the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, a longstanding ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, visited in late 2022.

I honestly believe that the irani’s have the upper hand here in military technology. There is nothing in the Russian arsenal which Iran covets possibly with the exception of nuclear submarines or ICBMS.

Truly! There ain’t nothing else that I can think off.

Germany, UK France slap sanctions on Iran over missiles for Russia

Germany, France and Britain on Tuesday condemned what they said was Iran’s delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the Ukraine war and declared new sanctions targeting air transport.

‘We will be taking immediate steps to cancel bilateral air services agreements with Iran,’ they said in a joint statement, adding that they would also ‘work towards imposing sanctions on Iran Air’.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken had said earlier, on a visit to London, that Russia had received shipments of the ballistic missiles and ‘will likely use them within weeks in Ukraine’.

London, Paris and Berlin said that ‘we now have confirmation that Iran has made these transfers’.

‘This is a further escalation of Iran’s military support to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and will see Iranian missiles reaching European soil, increasing the suffering of the Ukrainian people,’ they said.

‘This act is an escalation by both Iran and Russia, and is a direct threat to European security.’

The three countries said they ‘will be taking immediate steps to cancel bilateral air services agreements with Iran’.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has increased its production of weapons this year, prime minister Denys Shmygal said Tuesday as outgunned Ukrainian troops are trying to fend off invading Russian soldiers.

‘In the first eight months of 2024, we have doubled our weapons production compared to 2023. We are making progress. Drone production continues to grow,’ Shmygal said.

He also said Ukraine planned to build over a million drones by the end of the year.

Ukraine is heavily relying on military support from its allies but has been developing its own arms industry to become less dependent on aid.

As part of these efforts, the Ukrainian military successfully tested a domestically-produced ballistic missile, president Volodymyr Zelensky said last month.

Zelensky also said that his forces had deployed in combat for the first time a Ukrainian-made long-range ‘rocket drone’ called Palianytsia.

While developing its own production, Ukraine is still lobbying for sustained aid from allies, including at the Ramstein meeting with key allies in Germany last week.

Zelensky urged quick delivery of the aid promised during the meeting in his daily address on Monday.

‘The course of the war directly depends on the quality of logistics in supply and the fulfullment of all promises by partners,’ Zelensky said.

Iran needs huge Russian help to modernize their air force. SU-35/57 can make Iranian air force deadlier than their counterparts in the region. Also Iran needs Russian S-400/500 to modernize their air defense capabilities. Iran currently has Russian S-300 and some domestically produced SAM systems, which are also based on Russian S-300 system.

Bhai nobody wants Air Force anymore. We can evidently be reasonably confident on that score looking at ongoing wars over the last two years straight.

Russian SAMs have proven to be failures too over the last two years. Very patchy record.

Iranian SAMs like the Bavar 373 is based on the US SM-2 system with elements of the MIM-23 I -Hawk.

9th of Dey or the half a dozen others all use indigenous tech, with the only exception of the Karrar system which too is a modified Buk-M3 with a locally designed TEL.

There are elements taken from the Russian TOR or Buk systems, but we see many variations now.

I don’t see any Russian nor Chinese help toward Iranian drones nor CM’s/ BM’s nor SAMs.

However I do see substantial turnkey Chinese systems having been delivered to both the DPRK and Pakistan.

It's the Israeli air force that has destroyed Gaza. Hamas could not save Palestinians living in Gaza because they had no air force. Yes, Hezbollah got some success with drones but drones can't be an alternative to an air force. Look at Ukraine. They have got F-16 from the USA and the Russian president reacted to it seriously. If air force was not needed then the USA would not have supplied F-16 to Ukraine and the Russian president would not have reacted to it.

Israel used its Air Force as bomb trucks. They just bombed civilians because Hamas has no air defenses. Even then, they can’t defeat Hamas. With total air superiority.

The six F-16’s supplied to the UKi’s have already dwindled down to four, in less than four weeks. They’ll make no difference in the outcome of that conflict.

I don't know why you are so dead against air force. If the world accepts your opinion on air force, then they have to stop funding 5th and 6th generation aircraft. I pray to God that Pakistan doesn't listen to you and goes ahead with its plan to induct 5th generation aircraft soon. :)

Oh bhai the NGAD is already unmanned no? Look at the reports.

Makes no sense putting a pilot in da machine cuz the AI already doing 100 times better than any human no?

AF is morphing into a huge high tech AI run cybernet type of an organization.

I’m willing to go on da record here that within the next decade, only third world countries will have manned weapon systems.

All advanced economies will be completely unmanned in almost all industries.

Iran threatens ‘action’ over new sanctions

Iran has vowed to respond to fresh sanctions imposed by Britain, France and Germany over what they said was its supply of short-range missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine.

"This action of the three European countries is the continuation of the hostile policy of the West and economic terrorism against the people of Iran, which will face the appropriate and proportionate action of the Islamic Republic of Iran," foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said in a statement late Tuesday.

The three governments had announced they would take steps to cancel air services agreements with Iran and "work towards imposing sanctions on Iran Air".

"In addition, we will pursue the designations of significant entities and individuals involved with Iran's ballistic missile programme and the transfer of ballistic missiles and other weapons to Russia," they added.

Iran denied the allegation. "Any claim that the Islamic Republic of Iran has sold ballistic missiles to the Russian Federation is completely baseless and false," Kanani said.
