The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday decided to launch inquiries into allegations against former state minister for primary and mass education Zakir Hossain of amassing wealth by giving approvals to 26 schools in his district Kurgram illegally.

The graft watchdog initiated the move against Zakir and also three former lawmakers of the now deposed Awami League government over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

The three former lawmakers are Mohammad Habib Hasan (Dhaka-18), Md Nurul Islam Talukder (Bogura-3), and Mohammad Abdul Wadud (Chapainawabganj-3).

The commission took the decisions to run the inquiries following information of irregularities and corruption against them, said its director general for administration Md Shahriag.

According to the allegations, former state minister Zakir Hossain, also a former lawmaker of Kurigram-4 constituency, made a huge amount of illegal wealth, including his movable and immovable assets worth Tk 5.18 crore.

A major allegation against constitutes that he brought 26 schools under the child welfare trust in Kurigram illegally through abuse of his power as state minister for primary and mass education.

Anti-corruption commission’s intelligence unit in its primary probe found information of his illegal wealth in home and abroad, said officials.

Former lawmaker of Dhaka-18 Habib Hasan and his family members amassed massive illegal wealth at home and abroad, according to the allegations.

The commission in its investigation found that Habib purchased a house in his son Abir Hasan Tanim’s name at so-called Begum Para in Canada the value of which is worth 15.50 lakh Canadian dollars.

According to the allegations, former lawmaker of Bogura-3, Md Nurul Islam Talukder, embezzled money from different government projects and amassed a illegal wealth at home and abroad.

Mohammad Abdul Wadud, a former lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-3, and his family members amassed illegal wealth at home and abroad through corruption, irregularities, and abuse of power, said anti-corruption officials.

Since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, the anti-corruption commission has initiated inquiries against around 100 former ministers, state ministers, and lawmakers over allegations of amassing illegal wealth through corruption.​

A complaint was lodged with a Chattogram court today accusing former ministers Hasan Mahmud and Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel and 117 other Awami League men over attacking students during mass protest in the port city on August 4.

Md Farhad, who was injured in a shooting during the student movement, lodged the complaint with the court of Chattogram's Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Sarkar Hasan Shahriar.

Taking the complaint into cognizance, the court ordered Chandgaon Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) to treat it as an FIR after investigation, said Plaintiff's lawyer advocate Ashraf Hossain.

City unit AL general secretary AJM Nasir Uddin and former lawmaker Abdus Salam are among the accused.

According to the compliant, Farhad took part in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Bahaddarhat area on August 4. The accused, in collaboration with each other, formed unlawful gatherings, equipped with lethal weapons.

They fired and exploded crude bombs, targeting the student protesters, he said.

The complainant was hit with a bullet during the incident and later he was rushed to Chattogram International Medical College Hospital, added the statement.​

The National Board of Revenue has asked for bank details of five individuals, including ex-Army chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed and former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, for scrutiny of their tax compliance.

The National Board of Revenue has asked for bank details of five individuals, including ex-Army chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed and former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, for scrutiny of their tax compliance.

The three others are journalist couple Farzana Rupa and Shakil Ahmed, and former Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed.

NBR's Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) wrote to all banks and financial institutions, seeking bank account details of the five, confirmed a top official of the CIC yesterday.

Their income tax files will be examined to ensure whether they paid their taxes properly.

According to sources, the CIC will investigate their assets through field inspections.

"We have sent letters to all banks and financial institutions asking for all kinds of transaction information, including credit cards and deposits," said an official, seeking anonymity.

"After scrutinising the details, we can say whether they are involved in any money laundering and tax-evasion offences or not."

Meanwhile, the NBR has asked Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) to submit the details of the investment of SK Sur Chowdhury, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, in the stock market.

Journalist couple Farzana and Shakil have been arrested on other charges.

Earlier, the CIC also wrote to banks, nonbank financial institutions, BSEC, and the Department of National Savings, requesting bank account information of five business tycoons -- Salman F Rahman, vice-chairman of Beximco, Nazrul Islam Mazumder, chairman of Nassa Group, Mohammed Aziz Khan, chairman of Summit Group, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, chairman of Bashundhara Group, and Mohammad Obaidul Karim, chairman of Orion Group.

Besides, Tax Zone-15 of the NBR sought financial information from 91 banks and financial institutions to provide details of Chattogram-based business conglomerate S Alam's family members and their affiliated enterprises, and Awami League leader Sheikh Selim and his family.

The NBR has intensified its move after the ouster of the AL government on August 5 following a mass uprising.​

A case was lodged on Thursday with a court in Chapainawabganj against five people including former inspectors general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque and Benazir Ahmed for killing an activist of the then main opposition political party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in an incident of ‘crossfire’ in 2018.

Julekha Begum, wife of deceased BNP activist Abul Hossain, filed the case.

Former Chapainawabganj Rapid Action Battalion camp officer Mozammel Haque, and RAB’s two sources, Monirul Islam Tulu and Md Morsalin, were also named as accused persons in the case.

Accused Shahidul served as the inspector general of Bangladesh Police and Benazir was the director general of RAB when Abul Hossain was killed allegedly in a ‘crossfire’ incident on September 5, 2018.

Additional chief judicial magistrate Abu Taleb of the Chapainawabganj court fixed September 18 for passing further order in the case filed by Julekha, the plaintiff’s lawyer Nurul Islam said.

Julekha, in her case statement, alleged that a group of members of RAB and Police forcibly picked up her husband Abul Hossain from Rohanpur bus stand area under Gomostapur upazila on September 5, 2018, when her husband was returning home from a court in Chapainawabganj.

On the following day, Abul’s bullet-hit body was found at Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex.

Julekha alleged that the members of RAB and Police abducted and killed her husband in the name of ‘crossfire’.

‘My husband’s only crime was that he was involved in BNP politics’, she alleged and said that the members of the RAB and the Police then forcibly took her signatures on a blank paper and ordered her to bury her husband’s body as soon as possible.

Julekha alleged that she tried several times to file a case over the killing of her husband, but the accused persons did not allow her to do so.​

Former Public Administration minister Farhad Hossain was arrested in Dhaka's Eskaton area last night.

A Rab team arrested and handed him over to police, said Adabar Police Station OC Mahfuz Imtiaz.

Farhad was arrested in a murder case filed for killing garment worker Rubel during the student-led mass uprising, the OC added.

On August 22, Rafiqul Islam, father of the victim, filed the case with Adabor Police Station against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 147 others.

The complainant alleged that some of the accused, as per instruction, directly or indirectly, took part in the attack on hundreds of students on Ring Road at Adabor on August 5.

Rubel was shot and he died after two days.​

Safi Muddaser Khan Joty, the son of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, has been remanded in custody for questioning in an attempted murder case filed with Ashulia Police Station.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate M Saiful Islam placed him on a four-day remand following a hearing on Saturday reports bdnews24.com.

Police had requested a seven-day remand for questioning, according to Sub-Inspector Abu Taher Miah of Ashulia Police Station, who is investigating the case.

Joty's lawyer, Morshed Hossain, argued against the remand request, arguing that although his client is the son of a former home minister, he has no political connections or positions.

Morshed told the court that Joty had been advised by the doctor to stay home due to illness on the day of the alleged incident.

“If a police officer who is a friend of his committed any wrongdoing, it does not justify implicating my client. This case was filed to harass him because of his family background," the lawyer added.

Joty was arrested in Dhaka on Friday night in connection with the attempted murder case filed on Sept 11 by Robiul Sani.

The case lists 30 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, with Joti as the fourth accused.

Other notable figures charged include Asaduzzaman, former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, Ferdous Zaman, former secretary of the University Grants Commission, or UGC, and several others.

Joty is the only son of Asaduzzaman and oversees the family business, Savar Refractories Limited.

Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Aug 5, several former ministers and leaders of the Awami League have been arrested, but Asaduzzaman has remained out of public view.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, or BFIU, has frozen the bank accounts of the former member of parliament, his wife Lutful Tahmina Khan and their children.

They are also under a travel ban.

The Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC, has launched an investigation into allegations that Asaduzzaman and his associates took millions of takas in bribes through job appointments, transfers, and postings.

According to the complaint submitted to the ACC, the former minister allegedly took large sums of money from police, the Department of Narcotics Control, and the Fire Service during his time as home minister.​

Former minister for cultural affairs Asaduzzaman Noor and former state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Mahbub Ali were arrested from different locations of the city last night.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) arrested Asaduzzaman Noor at 11:00pm from Nawratan colony on Bailey Road. He was accused in a case filed with Mirpur Police Station, an official from DMP media wing said.

Noor, a prominent theatre activist, was a former lawmaker of Nilphamari -2 constituency.

Meanwhile, Mahbub Ali was arrested from Segunbagicha area.

Detectives arrested him from a house there in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station, Rezaul Karim Mallick, additional commissioner of Detective Branch of DMP, told The Daily Star.

DB officials said they will be produced before a Dhaka court today.​

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was accused in an attempt to murder case in Chattogram yesterday for allegedly issuing death threats to Prof Muhammad Yunus and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Sourav Priyo Pal, former vice-president of Chhatra Dal's Chattogram Metropolitan unit, filed the case with the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Deb.

According to the case statement, on May 18, 2022, during a press conference, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina said that Khaleda Zia should be thrown off the Padma Bridge and that Dr Yunus, who allegedly tried to stop funding for the bridge, should be given dunked in the Padma River.

The case statement further claimed that through the comments, Sheikh Hasina had expressed her secret desire to kill Khaleda and Yunus and defamed them.

It also said by publicly threatening them, Hasina incited workers of Awami League and its affiliated organisations to carry out these acts.

Taking the case into cognisance, the court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct an inquiry and submit its findings within 30 days.

Speaking to The Daily Star, the plaintiff's lawyer, Adv Rezaul Islam, said, "The case was filed against Sheikh Hasina as the sole accused, as she had issued death threats against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus."​

The police arrested former railways minister Nurul Islam Sujan on Monday in connection with a case filed with Jatrabari police station over the killing of student Imran Hossain in the capital during the student-led mass uprising.

He was handed over to Demra police station.

Sujan’s lawyer, Motaher Hossain Saju, told New Age that Sujan had been under police surveillance while receiving treatment at a specialized hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.

Saju also said that he had filed a pre-arrest bail petition on Sujan’s behalf, but the High Court refused to hear the request on Sunday due to Sujan’s absence at the hearing.

The court deferred the bail hearing until Tuesday.

Sujan is one of 295 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her ex-cabinet members, and several journalists, named in a murder case over the killing of student Imran Hossain at Kutubkhali Bou Bazar in Jatrabari on August 5, the day Hasina’s government fell.

Imran’s mother, Kohinur Akhter, filed the case with Jatrabari police station on September 1.

Several dozen high-profile politicians, former ministers and senior police officials have been arrested till date in connection with the killings of multiple students during the protests between July 16 and August 5.​

Four people, including managing director of Ekattor TV, Mozammel Babu, and editor of Bhorer Kagoj, Shyamal Dutta, were apprehended by locals while attempting to cross the border into India through the Dhobaura border in Mymensingh, Bangladesh.

Locals apprehended them in the border area and handed them over to the Dhobaura police station on Sunday night. Dhobaura police station Officer-in-Charge Chan Mia confirmed the matter.

Police reported that they arrived at the Dhobaura border in a private car at night with the intent of illegally crossing the border. Upon realizing this, the locals held four individuals, including Ekattor TV’s managing director Mozammel Haque Babu, Bhorer Kagoj newspaper editor Shyamal Dutta, senior reporter of Ekattor TV Mahbubur Rahman, and the private car’s driver Selim.

Earlier, on August 6, Shyamal Dutta, along with his wife and daughter, was sent back from the immigration while trying to enter India through Akhaura in Brahmanbaria.​

Shahriar Kabir, former president of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, was detained yesterday (16 September).

Officers of the Banani Police Station detained Shahriar from his residence, Tejgaon Police Station OC Md Mobarak Hossen confirmed the matter.

Shahriar will be arrested in a murder case filed with the Banani Police Station, he added.

The Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee is a pressure group founded to demand the trial of war criminals from the Bangladesh Liberation War. It advocates for secularism in Bangladesh.

Shariar Kabir was elected president of the committee in 2017 till 2024.​
