Yawn. That Radiation-hardened-by-design (RHBD) process is also as old as the 1970's.
Next you will be telling me that Indian ISRO has developed Cassette Tape and 33 RPM records which are brand new earth-shaking technology.

What you do not understand is that the Chip technology is contemporary, but its customization makes it special for space use. Even lower computing speed chips are made for washing machines and other home appliances as they work batter for specific purpose. This is not a rocket science.

Welcome to 2013 when $2 per piece Android phone (SOC) chips mounted on a cheap Android phone were sent to space.


Whether these 32 bit SRAM Indian chips work "batter" for specific purpose (space) is debatable. They are - in real terms, stone age technology made in India.

Instead of coming up with stories yourself (none are engineers here that I can see) - go ask one of the Indian electrical engineers who will know better.

Many chips in Washing machines, Automobiles and other appliances are very law in processing power. However, because of the customized programming, they work beautifully for particular sort of functioning because they are specifically made for that. Making application specific Chip is a very common development in industries, aviation and space. There are chips which are specifically made for aviation and make aviation single chip possible. However, those who has decided to find fault are beyond repair.

I speak to my SOC and Chip Industry friends all the time, some of them Indian. No offense - but Indian ISRO boasting about developing 32 bit SRAM chips is like an entity boasting about stone age stuff like siege weapons. It is what it is. It makes good newspaper and media copy though, for the lay Indian people who have no idea about the chip industry. Good vote-getter propaganda.

There are far better and more advanced things that India can and should boast about.

Then you must be knowing Vinod Dham, an Indian who made first Pentium Chip. Indians made it in US so Indians can make it here as well. Our well-wishers in Bangladesh and Pakistan thinks that we cannot make it but in past those who had thought that India cannot make it are proved each and every time. When US denied India supercomputer CRY XMP, Rajiv Gandhi established C-DAC and entrusted Vijay Bhatkar to make supercomputer. In a short span of time with 10 time faster supercomputer. We are on the verge of becoming a big player in Chip manufacturing like mobile. A decade back, we had 2 mobile companies. Today our mobile export is about 23 BN USD.
