But I heard they bought the Rafale M?
They did buy it - but it will be deployed in 2028-9 to replace the MiG-29K deployed in the carriers.
To successfully integrate the Rafale M on INS Vikrant, several modifications are required:
- Elevator Compatibility: The aircraft's larger wingspan necessitates adjustments to the carrier's elevators, which were originally designed for smaller aircraft like the MiG-29K.
- Ski-Jump Launch System: INS Vikrant uses a Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) system, requiring specific adaptations to the Rafale M's takeoff and landing characteristics.
Deployment Timeline
The first Rafale M aircraft is expected to be delivered by 2028-29, with all deliveries completed by 2030. This will enhance the Indian Navy's air power and operational capabilities significantly. The Rafale M will join the existing fleet of 36 Rafale jets already in service with the Indian Air Force, making India the first country outside France to operate both variants of the Rafale fighter.
