Several members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) were reportedly attacked in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on Wednesday when they protested alleged extortion and demanded action against illegal establishments in Krishi Market.

According to M M Shoaib, office coordinator of NCP’s Dhaka North unit, NCP activists from the Mohammadpur unit visited the Zone-5 office of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to submit a demand for the removal of illegal structures and the reinstatement of legal shop owners at the Krishi Market.

He said that a group of miscreants, led by Mahbub Alam—known to be a close associate of the deposed Awami League's former mayor Atiq—launched a sudden attack and attempted murder on NCP representatives in Mohammadpur.

Several people, including Mostakim, Kabir Sujan, Zaved, Shawon, and Sani, sustained injuries in this incident and were admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for treatment, he added.

On the other hand, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hasan said they were informed of the incident by an official of DNCC’s Zone-5.

“We sent a team to the spot and learned that a dispute had broken out between two groups over money and other issues. A scuffle occurred, but we could not confirm whether any political party, including the NCP, was involved. It did not appear to be a political matter,” the OC said.

No formal complaint has been received from either side as of yet, added the OC.

National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has called for building pro-Bangladesh politics for the betterment of the people.

"Chuadanga, stand for the education, health and development of the people. We must stand for reforms in building the country,” he told a street rally in Chuadanga.

Nahid said, “If the Mujibist fascist party is to come to Bangladesh, it will have to come over our lives”.

He sought people’s support for its demand for judicial reforms and a new constitution, saying if the people support NCP’s demand, they won’t be disappointed as the party will gift them justice-based politics.

This new political party, which has emerged from the mass uprising, is holding a nationwide 'July March' programme demanding justice, reforms and a new constitution since July 1 and it will continue till July 29.

“Sheikh Hasina's government launched enforced disappearances and killings with the direct and indirect support of the Indian government. It is the responsibility of the students and youth to protect the borders, soil, people and map of Bangladesh. The National Citizen Party will work on the basis of that responsibility,” he said.

Nahid said, “Killer Hasina and her party are responsible for all the killings of the July mass uprising. The Indian government has given shelter to this terrorist and murderous force in its own country.”

In this context, he said, the human dignity and sovereignty of the people of Bangladesh have been violated by Indian domination.

“India is depriving us from our fair share of water. We have been repeatedly humiliated politically, culturally and economically,” he added.

Nahid said, if India wants cordial relations with Bangladesh, that relationship will be based on equality, fairness and dignity.​

Trial of fascists, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution are essential for rebuilding Bangladesh, said National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam in Magura on Thursday.

At a rally in Magura as part of the party’s current programme marking the first anniversary of the July uprising, Nahid said, ‘We have to rebuild the country. The struggle to rebuild Bangladesh has begun after the July uprising.’

‘Trial of those people involved with the fascist regime, fundamental reforms, and a new constitution are essential to rebuild Bangladesh,’ said Nahid at the Vaina More rally in the district town on the 10th day of the party’s countrywide rally.

Nahid was also a former central leader of Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

He stated that there existed some crises even after the uprising, adding that the work on a new constitution and a July Charter to ensure fundamental reforms was not progressing.

The NCP leader called on people to become aware of those crises and also to be vocal against corruption and extortion.

The NCP began its national-level march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayed as part of its July 1- August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.

A group of student and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.

While addressing the rally in Magura, Nahid also reasserted the party’s demand for a July charter and a July declaration.

‘One year of the July uprising will be completed on August 5. We want the July charter and the July declaration by August 3,’ said Nahid, adding that the NCP, along with students and people, will take to the streets if the government together with the political parties fails to produce the July declaration by that time.

NCP leaders and activists, including the party’s chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint convener Samanta Sharmeen, senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara and senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adeeb, among others, participated in the marches and rallies in Magura and Narail districts.

The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

The party leaders and activists will hold marches and rallies in Jashore and Satkhira districts on Friday.​

National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced that it will launch a political battle if the party is denied ‘Shapla’ (water lily) as its electoral symbol.

NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari announced this at a press briefing after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the election commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday.

“We have no alternative to the Shapla as our electoral symbol. We have checked legal ways and found that there is no obstacle to us getting it. If any hurdle is created, we will fight it politically,” Nasiruddin Patwari said.

The NCP chief coordinator also raised questions on the neutrality of the election commission (EC) members. “The EC must be restructured before the election. It is straightforward. Even the law under which the current EC was formed must be changed,” he stressed.

He also alleged that many people from EC are acting as spokespersons for political parties. However, he added that those of this EC who have proven their integrity could remain in office.

A five-member NCP delegation met the CEC. The delegation included chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, chief organiser (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (northern region) Sarjis Alam, joint secretary Zahirul Islam, and joint convener Khalid Saifullah.

Joint secretary Zahirul Islam Islam briefed the media on the summary of the meeting. He said that the delegation submitted a new application requesting the Shapla symbol be allocated to their party.

Apart from this, the NCP delegation also urged the EC to remove the ‘boat’, electoral symbol of Awami League, from its list.

Zahirul Islam said that since the Awami League’s registration is currently suspended, its symbol should be removed from the EC’s list. The commission has assured them that the matter will be given special consideration.

Replying to a query on whether NCP can demand for the Shapla symbol since it is the national emblem, Zahirul Islam said the Shapla is not the national emblem alone; rather, it is a part of the national emblem, which also has other elements including jute leaves, paddy sheaves, and stars.

Pointing out that those elements are already used by other political parties, the NCP leader said, “The national emblem has specific colours and dimensions.”

In that case, they brought the matter to the EC’s notice that there is no legal barrier to getting Shapla as an electoral symbol, he added.

NCP also raised the issue of overseas voters being allowed to vote. Zahirul Islam said the commission assured them of considering the matter.

Recently, NCP applied for official registration as a political party. During the meeting, the delegation inquired about the progress of their application.

Zahirul Islam said the commission informed them that the registration process is ongoing.​

The National Citizen Party on Monday accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party of protecting the 1972 constitution adopted by the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-led government after the country’s independence.

The party convener Nahid Islam made the remark while addressing a roadside rally in front of Circuit House in Patuakhali district town.

The rally was organised on the 14th day of NCP’s countrywide programme marking the July uprising that led to the fall of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.

Nahid also alleged that the BNP activists had now become extortionists and thugs and were defending Mujibism.

‘Their hypocrisy is exposed,’ Nahid said, adding that conspiracies were on to suppress the July uprising leaders who fought against a corrupt and mafia-driven political system.

Nahid also accused politically motivated media reports of undermining the leaders of the July uprising.

The rally was presided over by Supreme Court lawyer and NCP’s Patuakhali district unit coordinator Zahirul Islam Musa.

The NCP’s chief organiser for the south zone, Hasnat Abdullah and senior joint convener Samanta Sharmin, among others, also spoke.

Earlier in the day, NCP central leaders led a mass procession that began from the New Market area and passed through Launch Ghat, Chawk Bazar, Puran Bazar, Mukul Cinema Hall, Banani and the municipal office in the district town.​

National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday said they have removed the “autocratic” Sheikh Hasina’s regime and there will be no room for new dictatorship in this Bengal soil.

“We will build a discrimination free, justice-based Bangladesh where there will be no room for extortion, rape and looting,” he told a street rally at the end of the July March programme of NCP at Press Club premises in the town.

Nahid said Bhola is the town of gas and this gas goes to different districts of the country but the people of Bhola have been deprived of gas, reports BSS.

“This is a discrimination against the people of Bhola,” he said.

Referring to the 57 martyrs of Bhola, in the July Mass Uprising, Nahid said the highest number of martyrs in the July Uprising was in Bhola.

“So today we have come to embrace the people of Bhola. There will be no more discrimination against the people of Bhola. The NCP will be by your side,” he said.

Nahid said the standard of healthcare in Bhola is so bad as well as communication system is also backward.

He pledged that Bhola will be a beautiful and prosperous district.

The National Citizens' Party (NCP) held a rally in Barishal last night, demanding electoral reform and national reconstruction.

The event, organised in front of the city corporation on Fazlul Huq Avenue, marked the conclusion of the party's six-district tour across the Barishal division.

NCP Convenor Nahid Islam said the party's movement could not be stopped through intimidation.

"On August 5, our goal was Ganabhaban. Today, our goal is the parliament," he said.

Addressing the rally, NCP's Chief Organiser (South) Hasanat Abdullah criticised what he termed the "selective outrage" of political parties.

"When we speak against extortion, one party takes offence. When we call out vote rigging, another party is upset," he said.

He also accused the Election Commission of double standards, citing its stance on inclusive elections.

"They say no inclusive election is possible without the Awami League. India says the same. The cantonment says the same. Another party echoes it. But when BNP was excluded from the polls, was that inclusive?" he asked.

Abdullah demanded the immediate removal of the boat symbol from the EC's registered list, alleging bias. He also criticised the exclusion of the Shapla symbol due to objections from an EC member and questioned the practicality of online nominations.

"A credible election is not possible under this commission," he added, vowing to challenge the EC politically.

Party leader Sarjis Alam moderated the rally, where speakers reiterated their demand for restructuring the Election Commission.

NCP leader Samanta Sharmin said Barishal would not tolerate drug or extortion syndicates.

"Those who kill with stones have no place in this city," she said.

Earlier in the day, NCP leaders arrived from Bhola and marched through Hospital Road and Sadar Road before delivering speeches at the rally venue.​

The National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders have left the district police superintendent’s office in Gopalganj in the Army’s armoured personnel carrier (APC).

Around 2:45pm on Wednesday, as their convoy was leaving the town following a rally, a large crowd ambushed the NCP motorcade near Gopalganj Government College in the Launch Ghat area, according to witnesses, reports bdnews24.com.

Earlier in the day, the party leaders had held a rally at the town’s municipal park amid several rounds of clashes and running battles between opposing groups.

As they departed the rally site under the protection of police and Army personnel, a large crowd reportedly launched an attack on their convoy shortly after it had moved a short distance.

Law enforcers then rerouted the convoy and escorted the NCP leaders to the district police superintendent’s office, where they stayed for some time.

Additional Inspector General (Crime) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam said, “NCP leaders and workers were stuck in the Gopalganj police superintendent’s office. When they were ‘cleared’ around 5:15pm, they left.”

He said reports of one person’s death were circulating, but the information could not be confirmed.

Witnesses at the scene described the entire area as resembling a war zone, with widespread unrest making it nearly impossible for residents to move from one place to another.

A video of NCP leaders boarding an armoured vehicle in the premises of the district police superintendent’s office has been circulated on social media.

The short clip shows NCP leader Sarjis Alam stepping out of an armoured vehicle and then re-entering it with Hasnat Abdullah, assisted by army personnel.

Shortly afterwards, NCP leader Akhtar Hossain arrived but was taken into a different nearby vehicle.

In another video, Convener Nahid Islam was seen getting into a similar armoured vehicle.

A journalist stationed near the police superintendent’s office reported seeing the leaders leaving in two vehicles, both heading towards the police line.

NCP Joint Member Secretary Alauddin Mohammad earlier told bdnews24.com, "NCP's central leaders have taken refuge in a nearby building after being attacked by miscreants. Later, we learnt it was the district police superintendent’s office.

“With the help of law enforcement, they are trying to cross the terror-prone area and join the next programme of the march.”

Since morning, the entire city of Gopalganj has turned into a battleground due to a series of attacks and clashes surrounding the NCP rally and march programme.

Shops in most areas have been closed due to panic amid the loud noise of hand grenades, sound grenades, and tear gas being thrown and the chase and counter-chase. People's movement has also been restricted.

The district administration has imposed Section 144 in the city.​

The blockade enforced by National Citizen Party (NCP) activists at Shahbagh protesting the attack on their fellows in Gopalganj has been withdrawn.

They put the blockade around 5pm demanding the arrest of the attackers within 24 hours.

Abu Bakar Mojumder, central convenor of Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad, student wing of the NCP, announced the withdrawal of the blockade.

He said, “We became very disappointed when the administration failed to ensure the security of the July fighters. We have announced blockade programmes across the country. Already, blockade programs are being carried out in many places. We are giving a 24-hour ultimatum. Within these 24 hours, those who attacked the NCP activists must be arrested. At the same time, considering the suffering of the people, we are withdrawing the program now.”

Earlier in the morning, activists of the Awami League and banned Chhatra League attacked the NCP men when they reached Gopalganj to attend the scheduled programme.

The AL and its associate bodies also got locked into clashes with the law enforcers, leaving several injured.

Protesting the attacks, NCP supporters blocked several roads in the country.

Meanwhile, local administration slapped curfew in Gopalganj district to maintain law and order.​

NCP Convener Nahid Islam made the announcement at a press conference held at the Khulna Press Club on Wednesday night.

He also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack.

“This attack on us reflects the Awami League’s ongoing fascist behavior, even a year after the July Uprisings,” Nahid said during the press conference.

He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organisations and political parties that condemned the incident and urged them to unite against the “fascist Awami League.”

At least three people were killed and several others injured in clashes between police and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies over a rally of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) in Gopalganj on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the government imposed a curfew in Gopalganj district amid heightening tensions over clashes between police and Awami League activists over an NCP rally.

The curfew will remain in force from 8pm on Wednesday to 6pm on Thursday, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.​

The interim government has issued a statement strongly condemning the attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders and activists. The statement issued on Wednesday from the official Facebook page of the Offic evening said the use of violence today in Gopalganj was utterly indefensible.

The interim government further said in the statement, “Preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement is a shameful violation of their fundamental rights. Members of the National Citizen Party (NCP), police and media were subjected to brutal attacks, with their cars vandalised and individuals violently assaulted.”

Claiming that members of banned Chhatra League and Awami League carried out these attacks, the statement further said, “This heinous act—allegedly carried out by members of the banned Awami League’s Chhatra League and AL activists —will not go unpunished. The perpetrators must be swiftly identified and held fully accountable. There is no place for such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh.”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep concern over the heinous attack by the "terrorists of the Awami fascist government" on the NCP's previously announced 'March to Gopalganj' event in Gopalganj.

In a statement today, the BNP Secretary General said, "After the fall of the Awami dictatorial regime in the student-public movement, the miscreants have once again engaged in creating an unstable situation in the country and gaining benefits through anarchy."

"Today, the barbaric attack on the NCP's previously announced program in Gopalganj, the crude bomb (cocktail) explosion, the arson attack on UNO and law enforcers vehicles, and the injury of police officers are manifestations of such misconduct of miscreants," he said.

Due to extreme deterioration of the law and order situation, Fakhrul said, the Awami allies have now raised their heads to create anarchy in the country, leaving the interim government in a difficult position and taking advantage of it.

There is no alternative to tame these miscreants with a strong hand, he suggested.

In order to establish democracy and the right of people to vote, so that fascism cannot rise again in the country, people of all classes and professions, regardless of party or opinion, must come forward in protecting the lives and property of the people of the country, he said.

"We must remain united. Otherwise, the country will once again face threats to protect its independence and sovereignty," he said.

In the statement, the BNP Secretary General called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the miscreants who attacked the NCP's previously announced programme in Gopalganj.

The rally, held at Faridpur town’s Janata Bank Mor on the 17th day of the NCP’s countrywide march, was part of the party’s ongoing programme to mark the first anniversary of the July uprising.

Nahid said, ‘We defeated the hooligans of Mujibism on August 5. We are still allowing time to arrest those hooligans peacefully and legally.’

‘Otherwise, we will soon hold a long march to Gopalganj and this time we will not hold the long march to make a comeback. We will only return after freeing the land and people of Gopalganj from Mujibism completely and forever,’ said Nahid at the rally.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, Nahid demanded that the attackers must be arrested within 24 hours after a series of clashes between members of law enforcement agencies and activists of the AL and its affiliates in Gopalganj district town over the NCP rally left at least four people dead and many injured.

Addressing the Faridpur rally, Nahid said, ‘Gopalganj is still a shelter for fascists. …We are with the general people of Gopalganj. We urge the government that not a single common person of Gopalganj must be harassed. But each of the fascists and hooligans must be arrested.’

Nahid was also a former central leader of the Students Against Discrimination movement that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5.

He raised concerns, saying that the hooligans of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations were not arrested, the arrestees were released from courts and the trial process was not progressing.

Indicating the associates of fascists and corrupt officials at different tiers of the administration, Nahid warned, ‘We have taken to the streets demanding trials and we will not leave the streets before ensuring the trials.’

Following the Wednesday attack in Gopalganj, a large number of police, Rapid Action Battalion, Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh members were deployed to ensure security for the Faridpur rally.Bangladesh travel packages

NCP leaders and activists staged a march from the Faridpur circuit house to Janata Bank Mor before the rally.

The NCP began its national-level march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayeed as part of its July 1- August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.

A group of student and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.

NCP leaders and activists, including the party’s member secretary Akhter Hossen, chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint convener Samanta Shermeen, senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara and joint convener Anik Roy, among others, participated in the marches and rallies in Faridpur and Rajbari districts.

The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

The party leaders and activists will hold a march and a rally in Munshiganj district today.​
