Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner (Crime Prevention-South) Md Tofayel Ahmed Miah today said National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary should be questioned regarding his recent remarks on crude bomb explosions in the capital.

Tofayel made the remark while responding to a query from journalists during a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road this afternoon.

Recently, following a protest march in Dhaka, Patwary said that there would be no more crude bomb blasts in Dhaka if the government met their three main demands.

Referring to the remarks at today's briefing, journalists asked the joint commissioner whether activists of banned organisations were solely behind the recent blasts or whether others were also involved.

In response, Tofayel said, "Nasiruddin Patwary needs to be questioned about why he made such a statement. I think he definitely should be questioned.”

Asked whether police would actually question the NCP leader, he said, "Higher officials can answer that.”​

The National Citizen Party on Monday decided to hold nationwide protests against what it described as a deterioration in law and order, extortion and land grabbing.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s political council, its highest policy-making body, at its temporary central office at Banglamotor in the capital Dhaka, chaired by NCP convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam.

The meeting expressed concern over the law and order situation and alleged land grabbing, and decided to organise protest programmes across the country.

NCP joint convener Sarwar Tushar said the meeting also discussed the government’s formation of a Constitution Amendment Committee, which the party alleged was contrary to the referendum verdict.

‘The government has deceived the nation and created a rift in its relations with the opposition. The government will have to take responsibility for this,’ he said, describing the committee as lacking public legitimacy.

The meeting also discussed the party’s strategy for the forthcoming local government elections, restructuring its political council and central committee, and distributing responsibilities among party leaders.

Later, the NCP held an emergency press conference on the prime minister’s speech at the United Nations, the law and order situation, and recent incidents of extortion and land grabbing.

Nahid Islam said the formation of the Constitutional Amendment Committee was an attempt to undermine the reform agenda in the name of constitutional amendment.

‘We do not want cosmetic surgery of the state. We want fundamental reforms,’ he said, adding that the Constitution had been amended 17 times without bringing fundamental change.

‘This drama must be stopped immediately and a session of the Constitutional Reform Council must be convened,’ he said.

On law and order, Nahid said recent incidents of vandalism at the Radda Centre at Mirpur and content creator Salman Muqtadir’s studio drew public attention because they occurred in the capital Dhaka, but similar incidents were taking place across the country.

He alleged that the law and order situation had deteriorated since the BNP government came to power and blamed the government for failing to control its leaders and activists.

Holding the government, the prime minister and the home minister responsible, he said law and order could not be restored while the current home minister remained in charge.

‘We call upon NCP leaders and activists to build a mass resistance with the people against extortion and land grabbing,’ he said.

Regarding the prime minister’s recent UN speech, Nahid said it failed to reflect people’s expectations.

He said the prime minister highlighted government initiatives, including the family card and canal excavation, but did not adequately raise issues such as the Middle East crisis, security of the Strait of Hormuz and fuel supplies.

He also criticised the government for not raising border killings, push-ins and India’s sheltering of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He alleged that Hasina had been allowed to conduct political activities and hold press briefings in India.

On local government elections, Nahid said the polls had been repeatedly ‘postponed’ and alleged that the government was trying to politicise the Election Commission to influence the electoral process.​
