[🇺🇸] Are the US martials civilian or paramilitary?

The US marshals are a federal fighting force responsible for handling federal fugitives and prisons. They assist in catching federal criminals as well as protect judges/witnesses. My question is, would this group be considered civilian or paramilitary?

US marshalls have the same official status as any Federal law enforcement agencies. Para-military has no legal basis in the US and government doesn't do that. Paramilitary in the US are private and they are not legally protected.

In US law, para- military defined as private militia which goes back to the pre-independence era. US military has no law enforcement mandate such as in Pakistan. Now, if you want to compare the equipment and training, LEO officers get similar as the US military.

In short, it is strictly defined by law what is a para- military. You can not use Pakistani analogy in the US. That will be illegal.

Yes as I thought USA might not have a formally designated legal paramilitary force. But i'm guessing since marshals don't fall under the formal military definition and are employed for handling dangerous situations and not for legal investigations, they would not fit the category of civilians like police officers would but rather under another universal definition which I guessed would be paramilitary.

But then if America does not have a legal definition for a civic state agency to be labeled paramilitary, they'd fall under the international definition.

Ok that's something I didn't know. I didn't mean legal definition. I meant as in universal definition. For example some countries might not have a legal definition of white race; however the typical universal definition of a white person is a person of Caucasoid skull type plus white skin, typically one of European descent.

Most countries might not have a legal criteria for race. But a sort of universal definition definitely exists.

@Old School I just checked out some portions of books online. They define the marshals as paramilitary. It seems they fall under the universal definition of paramilitary.

But as you pointed out a legal paramilitary might not exist in the legal books of law enforcement of America.

If I want to call you, I will call you by the official name given to you by your parents. That is the right way. Any other name will never be your official name and may even sound abusive. I hope you understand.
Para-military is a very sensitive name in the US, and the government sometimes calls them terrorists if discovered.

Anyone working outside the US military act is officially known as civilian. It is wrong to parallel them with military. US military must obtain official permission from the civilian authority to appear in public in uniform let alone entering a civilian area or city. They are not permitted to take part in anything outside their bases.
