Bangladesh Army quietly laying groundwork for setting up new cantonment in Naikhongchhari

The Bangladesh Army is quietly laying the groundwork for building infrastructure essential for a new cantonment in Naikhongchhari, close to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border with a substantial presence of well-armed Rohingya 'fighters', Northeast News has reliably learnt.

At least two Bangladeshi sources familiar with the on-going work told Northeast News separately that "flag markings" were proceeding to demarcate an unspecified area of land on which the Army's new facility will come.

The sources, however, said that the new cantonment will come up close to Ramu (in Cox's Bazar district), which is the headquarters of the Bangladesh Army's 10th Infantry Division.

Keokradong, the last village in Bandarban district, is very close to the Bangladesh-Myanmar-India trijunction. On the Indian side in Mizoram district lies Duduksora beyond which is Parva where a BSF unit is stationed.

Ground clearance and soil-levelling work is also said to have begun at Silkhali north of Teknaf but not too far from Naikhongchhari (in Bandarban district).

Northeast News had in April 2025 revealed the Army's plans to set up a facility at Silkhali on the eastern coast in Cox's Bazar district, which was to be a supply base.

Land had been earmarked for this supply base.

In February 2025, Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman had personally toured areas around Silkhali and identified the location for the proposed supply base.

Located 30 kms north of Teknaf, Silkhali is a small revenue village on the Bay of Bengal.

The Bangladesh Army operates a field firing range for artillery pieces, chiefly Turkish-made field guns and anti-tank guided weapons, besides mortars and small arms.

The Bangladesh Army has been laying the groundwork and conducting initial preparations to establish a new military installation and supply base presence connected to the border regions near Naikhongchhari in Bandarban and adjacent areas like Silkhali, aligning with strategic operational logistics close to the Ramu Cantonment 10th Infantry Division headquarters.

Strategic Context and Development
    • Location Focus: Groundwork and scouting efforts tie the Naikhongchhari-Bandarban border sector with nearby logistic and supply footprint expansions evaluated by top military leadership.
    • Operational Goal: The layout aims to strengthen border security, logistics, and troop mobility in response to regional complexities and spillover tensions near the Myanmar border.
    • Related Milestones: This follows other regional expansions, such as the inauguration of the Army Hill and Jungle Warfare School at Alikadam Cantonment by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman.
