A container ship from Karachi reached the outer anchorage of Chattogram port this afternoon, carrying 825 TEUs of import containers from Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

This is the second time the Panama-flagged vessel Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan has brought goods to the port. On its first voyage, the ship arrived on November 11 with 370 TEUs of import containers, including 297 TEUs from Pakistan and the remainder from the UAE.

This time, the vessel arrived carrying 825 TEUs of import containers, equivalent to 780 containers. According to customs and port sources, 699 TEUs came from Pakistan and 126 TEUs from Jebel Ali port in the UAE.

Major portions of the goods from Pakistan this time include refined sugar and dolomite, a raw material for glass factories. Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Md Omar Faruk stated that the vessel arrived at the outer anchorage around 5:00pm and would take berth at a port jetty tomorrow morning.

The ship brought 780 containers, 675 from Pakistan and 105 from the UAE. According to the cargo manifest submitted at Chittagong Customs House, out of the 780 containers loaded from Pakistan, the vessel brought 285 containers of refined sugar weighing 7,400 tonnes from Karachi port. These consignments were imported by Pran Dairy Limited, Savoy Ice Cream Factory Limited, Shehzad Food Products Ltd, and M/s Broadway Marketing Co.

Different glass factories, such as Nasir Glass Industries Ltd, Nasir Float Glass Industries, and Akij Glass Industries Ltd imported 171 containers of natural dolomite and loose dolomite lumps.

Industrial raw materials like soda ash were imported in 122 containers from Pakistan. Besides, 47 containers of fabrics were imported by various export-oriented readymade garment factories, and nine containers of fresh potatoes weighing 2,620 tonnes were also imported from Pakistan.

The cargo from Jebel Ali port in the UAE included home and kitchen appliances, dishwashers, refrigerators, lubricant oil, fresh dates, and firefighting equipment.

Dubai-based container ship operating firm Feeder Lines DMCC introduced the new service, connecting six countries using the vessel. The vessel's route is Jebel Ali (UAE)-Karachi (Pakistan)-Chattogram-Belawan (Indonesia)-Port Klang (Malaysia)-Mundra (India)-Jebel Ali (UAE).

Regensea Lines Ltd, a concern of Karnaphuli Limited owned by former environment, forest, and climate change minister and Awami League lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury, is the local agent of the ship.

The vessel is expected to take away over 1,000 TEUs of empty containers from Chattogram for its next ports.​

The container ship Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan has made its second voyage on the Dubai-Karachi-Chattogram route, arriving at the outer anchorage of the Chattogram Port on Saturday evening.

This time, the vessel carried an array of goods, including refined sugar, dolomite, soda ash, sugarcane molasses, cloth rolls, dates and other products, with 86 per cent of the cargos originating from Pakistan.

Anis Ud Daula, executive director of Regency Lines Limited, said that the ship arrived with 126 containers from Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port and 699 containers from Karachi.

Among the imports, refined sugar dominated the shipment, with 285 containers carrying 7,500 tonnes (1,48,200 bags) sourced by buyers such as Pran-RFL, Shehzad Food Products, Savoy Ice Cream Factory and Broadway International.

Dolomite, a vital material for glass production, followed, with 171 containers imported by Nasir Float Glass and Akij Glass Industries. Soda ash, another essential industrial raw material, was imported in 138 containers.

Additionally, 46 containers of cloth rolls for export-oriented garment factories, 18 containers of potatoes, and 20 containers of sugarcane molasses were part of the shipment.

The Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan, operated by Dubai-based Feeder Lines DMCC, has been pivotal in establishing a direct link on the Dubai-Karachi-Chattogram-Malaysia-Indonesia-India-Dubai route. Regency Lines Limited, a subsidiary of Karnaphuli Limited, acting as its local agent.

On November 11, the Panama-flagged MV Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan made its inaugural trip to Chattogram, carrying 370 TEUs of cargo.

The shipment included 297 containers from Karachi and 73 containers from the UAE.​

BD should pursue greater engagement with Pakistan as long as BDs interest is maintained.

I am all for increased trade and people to people contact via reopening on shipping lanes, direct flights etc.

However I would be against seeking Pakistan as a replacement for India in any capacity. This is not a zero sum game.

Not withstanding current issues with India, BD should engage Pakistan with a view to opening new horizons and exploring win win scenarios.

There has been some positive developments and I am hoping to see BD exports starting to flow west.
