Abbas calls out Jamaat's polls delaying tactics

BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas today alleged that a certain political party is trying to confuse the government through various contradictory statements only to delay the national election.

"They talk about the election... sometimes they say they won't participate, sometimes they say they will... sometimes they say they will join if certain conditions are met, sometimes they say they will if other conditions are met," he said referring to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

The BNP leader made the remarks while inaugurating the membership renewal programme for the party's Dhaka South City unit at the party's Nayapaltan central office.

Mirza Abbas said due to this party's wrong decisions in 2008, BNP and its alliance partners participated in the election.

"As a result, many prominent and well-known people in Bangladesh had to give up their lives at the gallows," he said referring to BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders who were executed for crimes committed in 1971 at the International Crimes Tribunal.

Abbas, a BNP Standing Committee member, urged Jamaat not to repeat the same mistakes.

"A single wrong decision can cost the lives of lakhs of people... So, do not prolong the election issue... Various political parties are making contradictory statements about the election, confusing the government and placing it in an unstable position," he observed.

Abbas called upon the interim government to hold the national election by December this year, as per its previous announcement. "We are always ready for the elections, Insh'Allah."

He said those trying to disrupt the election process are, in effect, attempting to undermine the country's independence and sovereignty, depriving the people of their rights to free speech and vote. "Please, refrain from engaging in such activities."

Mirza Abbas also criticised the authorities for not arresting those involved in the Nabil Group's corruption, which resulted in the embezzlement of Tk 12,000 crore.

He pointed out that those associated with the Nabil Group seem untouchable due to their strong political connections with a particular political party.

The BNP leader alleged that a section of people are unfairly blaming BNP for various wrongdoings, while overlooking the party's efforts to maintain peace and tolerance.

He accused some political parties and politicians of supporting certain business groups that played a role in inciting violence during the July-August mass uprising, with promises to remain loyal to Sheikh Hasina until their deaths. "Despite their playing such role, they still did not face any consequences due to their political backing."

Abbas claimed that a political party, which is now quick to criticise BNP, had allied with these business groups.

"From now on, our task will be to expose such hypocritical political parties, which try to falsely blame others, and to reveal their true nature to the public," he stated.

Abbas cautioned BNP leaders and workers that those involved in anti-organisational activities or damaging the party's reputation should not be granted membership.

He also warned against opportunists, particularly from the Awami League, who might attempt to join BNP, asserting that such individuals would harm the party.

Abbas stressed the importance of quality over quantity, stating that the party values loyal and solid members over large numbers.

He voiced concern about rising commodity prices, noting that business syndicates are becoming more active as Ramadan approaches amid the government's inaction.

BNP, Jamaat workers clash over sharing of Balumahal lease money

Workers of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have clashed over the sharing of money from the Balumahal, designated sand quarry which is locally known as NICO, lease tender in Faridpur’s Boalmari, leaving two people injured.

A BNP leader has filed a written complaint against Jamaat workers at the police station in this incident, said Boalmari Police Station chief Mahmudul Hasan.

Mahmudul said on Friday the former organising secretary of municipal BNP Russell Ahmed submitted the complaint a day earlier.

The clash took place outside the Boalmari Upazila Parishad around 10:15pm on Apr 16.

Those injured in the clash are Russell’s younger brother and former president of Boalmari Government College Chhatra Dal, Robin Molla, 32, and Riaz Mridha, 47, owner of a store in the municipal market.

Riaz is the elder brother of the former organising secretary of Boalmari Municipal Chhatra Dal, Miraj Mridha.

Meanwhile, some CCTV footage of the clash went viral on social media on Thursday.

In the footage, a group of youths attacked a meeting held at Riaz's store on Apr 16 with wooden batons and local weapons.

Robin, who had taken refuge at the store, suffered a head injury and Riaz was injured while trying to fend off the attackers.

Later, locals rescued them and took them to the emergency department of the Boalmari Upazila Health Complex.

Riaz was released after giving first aid, while Robin is still undergoing treatment.

According to locals, at the beginning of every year, the district administration invites tenders for a one-year lease of Lankachar Balumahal on the Madhumoti River in Boalmari. A total of 15 tenders were sold for this lease this year.

However, the sale and purchase were completed through a secret auction based on the agreement of the bidders.

Although they had agreed to share the money, one bidder, Jewel Biswas, complained that time was wasted without paying his due.

Boalmari Municipality Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Niyamul Hasan has confirmed Jewel is a Jamaat worker.

On Wednesday, a mediation meeting was held at the Riaz’s store to resolve the dispute over money sharing.

Attendees included former municipal Russell, municipal Jubo Dal joint convenor Mohsin Alam Chan, Miraj, and local residents.

Jamaat activist Jewel arrived at the meeting carrying a local weapon, which was spotted tucked into his waist.

When attempts were made to take it from him, a scuffle broke out between him and the BNP members present.

Soon after, 25-30 people led by Jewel launched an attack on the meeting, armed with sticks and local weapons.

Jewel said, “Balumahal had a deposit of Tk 45,000 with Russell and Miraj. When he demanded money, Russell called me to Riaz’s store.

“But when I went there, they attacked me using the excuse of not giving me the money. After hearing what happened, my brothers from the village came to help.

“There, they found Russell’s brother Robin and beat him up.”

Russell said, “Jamaat-e-Islami cadre Jewel demanded extortion from me. When Mohsin wanted to know about this and Miraj called him, he planned to kill me by carrying weapons.

“However, when people saw it and took it away, his terrorist group, who had already been on the run, attacked us.

“Although I managed to escape, they severely beat and injured my younger brother.”

OC Mahmudul said, “On the day of the incident, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control after receiving information.

“Those injured in the attack have filed a written complaint with the police station. Legal action is under process, subject to investigation.”

No possibility of alliance with Jamaat, we’ll have to wait and see what happens: Salahuddin

Though he has categorically ruled out the possibility of an electoral alliance with their party’s long-time ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed indicates that the door remains open for talks with the National Citizen Party (NCP) until the election schedule is announced.

In an interview with news agency UNB, Salahuddin Ahmed expressed confidence that the interim government will hold the next national election by mid-February next year as he thinks various political parties are raising demands around the polls as part of their broader political strategies.

He also urged the National Consensus Commission to conclude discussions on reform proposals within a reasonable timeframe, warning against unnecessary delays that could hinder the election process.

“I don’t see any possibility of an electoral alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. We had an alliance with them in the past as part of our political strategy, but we don’t feel the need to partner with Jamaat this time,” Salahuddin said.

He said the BNP is focused on forming an electoral alliance and a national government with those who joined their simultaneous movement and democratic struggle. “Right now, we’re not considering anything beyond that.”

When asked about a possible alliance with NCP, Salahuddin replied, “Discussions on political alliances will continue until the election schedule is announced. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

He said all democratic parties will adopt different strategies ahead of the election. “So, let’s wait and see what strategy BNP ultimately chooses for the election and alliances.”

He voiced frustration over the lengthy discussions by the National Consensus Commission on reform issues. “I think the discussion is being unnecessarily prolonged. In my opinion, it should have been concluded within a reasonable timeframe.”

The BNP leader said there seem to be some shortcomings in how the meetings are conducted by the Consensus Commission, which is causing the whole process to become a time-consuming one.

“I hope that the discussion would not continue for much longer. We should move towards a summary and conclusion," he said.

Salahuddin said there is significant development that the caretaker government system has almost been restored—only the Supreme Court’s review is pending. “We hope the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will give a positive verdict on the review petition.”

He said the people of Bangladesh agree that national elections should be held under a neutral caretaker government. “But, there is still debate over its structure or whether the immediate past Chief Justice should remain the first option for the Chief Adviser of the caretaker government.”

The BNP leader said discussions on alternatives are still ongoing. “Our party and others will give our proposals, as will the Reform Commission in this regard. If no better option is agreed upon, the current structure will remain.”

Salahuddin strongly opposed the idea of introducing a Proportional Representation (PR) system in the upcoming election, saying Bangladesh’s current political, social and electoral culture is not suitable for such a system.

He argued that the PR system could disconnect voters from their direct representatives, discourage voter participation, and create instability by resulting in fragmented parliaments with no clear majority.

The BNP leader emphasised that Bangladesh needs a functioning political structure based on direct elections where constituents can choose their own representatives.

Salahuddin stressed that Bangladesh is not ready for the Proportional Representation (PR) voting system. “It has never been practised here, and people are not familiar with it.”

He explained that voters in Bangladesh prefer to vote for a person they know from their own area, not just for a political party. “In PR, even if a party gets more votes in a region, someone from another area may be selected, which does not reflect the people’s choice. This could discourage voters and weaken democracy.”

He also said that in other countries where PR works, their local governments are strong, but this is not applicable in Bangladesh. “Here, MPs are directly involved in development projects, so this system may not work well.”

Another problem, he mentioned that independent candidates will be left out in PR. “Even if someone is very popular, they can’t get elected unless they belong to a party. That’s unfair and undemocratic.”

He believes that small parties want PR because it would help them get more seats even with fewer votes. “But this would lead to unstable coalition governments, and the country may not have strong leadership.”

Salahuddin, who is representing the BNP in discussions with the Consensus Commission, said their party will not accept the PR system election under any circumstances.

He said some political parties are making different demands — some want reforms, others say no election without justice or proportional representation (PR). “They are making these remarks with various purposes. But we are confident the election will be held by February next year as per the Constitution. Everyone has the right to speak, but their statements may have political motives.”

“We respect new political parties and wish them well. But real political weight comes from public support. Some smaller parties speak louder than larger ones, though they represent very few people. In politics, public perception matters,” the BNP leader said.

Even within alliance partners of BNP, he said different views may arise. “That could be part of their bargaining strategy, like seat sharing.”

When asked about the future of the Awami League, Salahuddin said, “My view is that the Awami League is no longer a political party. They lost their political ideals and character long ago. They have transformed themselves into a mafia-like organisation — an undemocratic, fascist force. Throughout their history, from before 1975 until now, they have never practised democracy. Democracy is simply not in their DNA.”

Mirza Abbas severely criticises Jamaat, Charmonai Pir, NCP

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas addresses on 14 July 2025 a rally, organised by Dhaka city north and south units of the BNP at the party’s central office at Naya Paltan, Dhaka. Prothom Alo

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Mirza Abbas has claimed that no member of the party was involved with the killing of trader Lal Chand alias Sohag in Old Dhaka’s Mitford area.

“Mahin arrested in connection with the incident has photos with the leaders of NCP (National Citizen Party), not the BNP,” he stated while addressing a rally in front of the party headquarters in the capital’s Naya Paltan area today.

Dhaka city north and south units of the BNP organised the rally and a procession in protest against continuous conspiratorial lies and negative propaganda about BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and on demand of exemplary punishment for the brutal killing near Mitford Hospital.

Following the meeting, the party leaders and activists brought out a procession that paraded through Kakrail, Matsya Bhaban and ended at the National Press Club.

Speaking about the brutal killing of scrap trader Lal Chand in Old Dhaka’s Mitford Hospital area, Mirza Abbas said, “Actually BNP has involvement with this incident. I have a photograph, I can’t show you right now. A person, Mahin, who has been arrested in connection with this incident, has a photo with the NCP leaders. I can show you this; I can challenge this. They (NCP Leaders) have photos with this person but an attempt is underway to blame the BNP for this.”

Terming this killing as a planned incident, the BNP standing committee member further said, “It seems the video of this killing is made in a planned way. Now they have been trying to attack the BNP bringing that forward. But others’ involvement has been uncovered while trying to entrap the BNP. Mahin’s photo with NCP Leaders clearly proves that a conspiracy has been going on to shift the blame of the murder on the BNP. There has been an attempt to bracket us with the Awami League. But whatever be the conspiracy, you can’t erase the BNP from people’s minds.”

Stating that Bangladesh is the address of the BNP, Mirza Abbas said, “A party has been chanting slogans that the BNP will follow the route taken by Awami League. This is not so easy. We don’t have any other address. This Bangladesh is our permanent address.”

Urging the people not to be confused, the senior BNP leader said, “There is no reason to be confused. We request the people, analyse the photo of the Mitford incident. Please don’t try to blame the BNP for no reason. It is the BNP that earned the country’s independence and it is the BNP that will protect the country’s independence.”

Slamming the Charmonai Pir hard, Mirza Abbas said, “I saw in the social media that people are saying, Charmonai Pir has no knowledge; neither he has read the holy Quran, nor the Hadith. He is a completely ignorant person. Come up with an answer to this question if you are sincere. We also want to know, where have obtained the religious knowledge? Now this person and his supporters cannot bear the BNP, but they had no problem in bearing with the Awami League.”

The BNP standing committee also criticised the Jamaat-e-Islami. He said, “There is another party that has no other tasks except tall talk and taking money from people cunningly. They have taken money from the Bashundhara Group and City Group. Everything will be accounted for. They once leaned on Ershad during his rule, then relied on the Awami League. And now, they talk big. Their only concern now seems to be the BNP. They think that if they can eliminate the BNP, they’ll be able to enjoy absolute power without any opposition.”

Protesting at the obscene language directed at BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, Mirza Abbas said, “Some are trying to say, why was Tarique Rahman beaten severely during the 1/11 changeover? We want to say that Tarique Rahman was beaten because he was a pro-country person. Many are saying, why is Tarique Rahman not returning to the country? He will return on time. None can stop that. It truly seems the life of Tarique Rahman is under threat. But the country will move ahead under the able leadership of Tarique Rahman.”

He also warned people not to spread false statements about Tarique Rahman.

Stating that the country is not safe in the hands of anyone except the BNP, Mirza Abbas said, “Martyred President Ziaur Rahman fought for the independence of the country. When was the Charmonai Pir and Jamaat-e-Islami at that time? Now they are talking big. Ziaur Rahman introduced multi-party democracy in the country and Khaleda Zia introduced parliamentary democracy here.”

Urging the party leaders and activists to remain vigilant, Mirza Abbas said, “Identify any thieves and robbers around you. The Awami League’s goons have been trying to join our party. They could carry out crimes at any moment. You must remain cautious about it.”

Jamaat will never come to power in Bangladesh: Gayeshwar Chandra Roy

BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said today that Jamaat-e-Islami will never come to power in Bangladesh – not even until the Day of Judgement.

"Everything Jamaat is saying now is intended to sabotage the election. Awami League isn't in power and they cannot tolerate the idea of BNP coming to power. But I know this for sure, Jamaat will never come to state power in Bangladesh… Other parties may come, but not them. That's certain," he said.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists around 12:00pm at a programme held at the residence of Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, BNP's Central Executive Committee Secretary for volunteer affairs, in Srinagar upazila, Munshiganj.

"They (Jamaat) cannot comprehend the sentiments of ordinary people. Without understanding the language of the masses, they seek to achieve their own agendas. Those who do not recognise the Liberation War, who say it was a war between India and Pakistan rather than a war for our independence – the people of Bangladesh no longer have the time to give importance to such statements. Their aim is to sabotage the election," he said.

Questioning further, Gayeshwar asked, "Those in Awami League who have committed crimes will face justice. But why shouldn't they be allowed to form a party?"

Also present at the event were BNP Joint Secretary General Abdus Salam Azad; Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu; former foreign secretary Mohsin Ali Khan; Munshiganj BNP Convening Committee members Awlad Hossain Uzzal and Jasim Molla; and Mahmud Hasan Fahad, organising secretary of the district's Women and Child Rights Forum, along with leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies.4

On Thursday, another individual was assaulted, and a woman was harassed over suspicions of being an Awami League member.

Additionally, three others were beaten and handed over to police on similar suspicions.

Local leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal held a procession at Dhanmondi 32, demanding the hanging of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Shibir leaders and activists had also gathered there.

He alleged that he was attacked despite police presence nearby. He claimed he had called police repeatedly but did not receive any response.

Dhaka College Shibir member Md Towhidul said, “One of the attackers has been handed over to the local Chhatra Dal. We have demanded a proper trial for this attack.”
