Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is to embark on an official visit to Turkiye following an invitation by his Turkish counterpart and recently re-elected President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

News of Sisi’s visit was disclosed by Ambassador Salih Mutlu Sen, who currently serves as Ankara’s charge d’affaires in Cairo, Daily Sabah reported on Friday.

According to diplomatic sources, cited by broadcaster NTV, Erdogan extended the invitation to Sisi after the latter called him to congratulate him on his election victory. The Egyptian president is said to have welcomed the invitation, and may visit Ankara shortly after Eid Al-Adha, which starts on 28 June.

The latest diplomatic developments between the two countries follows an agreement to upgrade relations late last month by exchanging ambassadors, following years of strained ties, since Egypt’s 2013 Saudi and UAE-backed military coup, which overthrew the late President Mohamed Morsi, who was a close political and ideological ally of Erdogan.

Since the democratically-elected Morsi government was overthrown, diplomatic relations between Ankara and Cairo have been mutually maintained at the level of charge d’affaires.

Back-door diplomacy between the two countries gained traction in November of last year, after Sisi and Erdogan met and shook hands at the sidelines of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

It's interesting to see the Egypt-Turkey relations mending. It is always at odd due to the Greek issues, waters, and the Arab issues in Turkey.

I am considered mostly anti-arab in most circles and even I thought breaking of relations with Egypt was stupid. Both countries suffered needlessly for no reason.

We could have built the Egyptian navy much stronger for much cheaper with much more Egyptian economic involvement. Turkish companies could have built a lot of infrastructure projects in Egypt. We could have cooperated in drilling the mediterranean oil/gas reserves. Instead a decade is lost in pointless bickering.

So - is Egypt's participation in the Kaan and other defense projects a certainty by now?

That news would be available from brother @Egyptian...

What say you brother? Give us the scoop.

it says here that from healthcare to energy to civilian aviation, 17 agreements were signed but I can't find anything about any military exports from Sisi's visit.

The Kaan fighter program is not going to mature that quickly (given the myriad challenges, especially technology-wise) and will require at least a better part of a decade to complete, even with 50% financial commitment from Egypt. So no immediate details will surface.

We just have a POC now for Kaan, but instrumentation, avionics, weapons integration, operating envelope fine-tuning, all need to come together.

Besides - there may be legitimate reasons to keep things under wraps and a news blackout may be deliberate.

But if Egypt does agree to participate, it will give them a huge leap in capability and aviation technology for a 5G (maybe even 5.5G) fighter platform .

I see no reason why Egypt would turn down this opportunity.

I see no reason why Turkey should offer. Kaan is critical technology and Egypt isn't that friendly.

We could sell them hürjet instead.
