I never once made the effort to reach out to him and meet up even once on my many visits to the UK.

Don't know why. Call it my gut.

Even my second to last visit, I chatted with him (about shopping for girly stuff for my nieces, and UK sizes, etc. that sort of uncle thing) and he was really miffed that I had not told him that I was coming over. So that he could have come down to London to meet up.
