Atmanirbhar Bharat backfires? India moves to import $8B German AIP submarines after decade delay

We want best technologies from across the world. We got French, now will get German. We have developed world 's best AIP. Fussion of all these technologies will allow us to be the leader in this technology. When this tender was floated, it was told that this will be the last import of diesel electric submarine.
In nuclear submarine, we have done pretty well. Yet, our reactors are not as advance as those of France. We will tie up with france for compact reactor pump jet propulsion. This will complete our quest of best in class submarines.

You need a big nuclear submarine fleet to counter China. Can India afford to build as many nuclear submarines as China?

We need big Nuke subs to attack China but not to defend our territory. Diesel electric submarines are for more silent. French and German subs are best in technology.

India has built maybe three Nuclear subs, while China has far larger and more sophisticated subs of that variety, 32 to be exact (and more on the way). Their nuclear sub fleet is larger than that of Russia.

China's nuclear submarine fleet includes six operational Jin-class ballistic missile submarines (Type 094) and nine Shang-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (Type 093). As of 2026, China has approximately 32 active nuclear submarines, making it the second-largest operator of nuclear-powered submarines globally, behind the United States.
