€14.45m deals signed with Germany for sustainability

Bangladesh and Germany signed three new technical cooperation agreements yesterday.

The deals, valued at €14.45 million, focus on transforming the textile sector, enhancing climate adaptation efforts, and advancing sustainable electric mobility, according to a press release.

Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), and Andreas Kuck, country director of GIZ Bangladesh, signed the agreements, highlighting the shared commitment of both nations to sustainable growth.

The agreement on the "Programme for Sustainability in the Textile Sector II (STILE-II)", with funding of €7.3 million under the Ministry of Commerce, aims to modernise Bangladesh's textile and ready-made garment (RMG) industries, aligning them with EU sustainability standards.

Key outcomes include policy alignment, strengthened sectoral instruments, and the promotion of gender equality.

The "Localisation of National Climate Adaptation Targets (LOCAT)" deal, backed by €3 million, will help the Local Government Division enhance institutional capacities for urban climate action plans aligned with the National Adaptation Plan. Outputs include gender-responsive tools and a learning framework for city-level climate strategies.

The "Transition to Sustainable E-Mobility (Trans2SMo)" deal will enable the Power Division to utilise €4.15 million to promote electric mobility.

This includes refining legal frameworks, capacity-building initiatives, and pilot projects showcasing the viability of electric vehicles.

The Munich Security Conference Chairman Ambassador Christoph Heusgen on Tuesday called on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.

Ambassdor Heusgen invited the chief adviser to join the key annual security conclave to be held in the German city of Munich in February this year.

During the meeting the two dignitaries discussed the July uprising, Bangladesh's relationship with its neighbours, the Rohingya crisis, and the online misinformation campaign.

Heusgen said that online platforms such as Facebook are used to spread fake news and misinformation about Bangladesh.

He suggested that Bangladesh can emulate European nations' example to enact a law requiring online platforms to fact-check content.

Lutfey Siddiqi, special envoy of the Chief Adviser, and Lamiya Morshed, SDG coordinator, also joined the meeting.

Yunus also met Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta on the sidelines of WEF Summit.

I think you do not understand the difference between foreign aid and Remittance. That Remittance is legitimately earned buy Indians by their hard work wherever they are. It is their right to spend wherever they are.

I understand perfectly well.

The right to earn remittances from employers in Muslim countries (Gulf, Saudi) itself is a privilege.

There should be some gratitude for being provided that privilege by Muslims.

Instead, these Hindu people working in Muslim countries are all diehard Muslim haters.

You cannot bite the hand that feeds you.

You see the problem here, with ethics?

It seems that all the countries are Bosom friends of BD except India now a days.

India has a problematic foreign policy and has had it since Modi was elected.

Most of India's neighbors are not India's friends, and neither is China, a super power.

You can be all sarcastic as you want - but these are facts and did not need to be this way.
