BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the party’s 31-point vision is being realised through the ongoing state reform process.

He addressed a rally at 3:30pm on Wednesday outside the party’s central office in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan, marking the July Uprising anniversary.

Fakhrul told supporters the election schedule would be announced soon.

He noted that the current restructuring efforts reflect the agenda set out by BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Calling for a renewed commitment to the country’s future, Fakhrul said: “Let us pledge today to build a truly happy and prosperous Bangladesh.”

Tarique joined the rally virtually from London.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed his sincere gratitude to the head of the interim government, Professor Dr Yunus.

He (Tarique Rahman) also extended thanks to the advisory council members and all the concerned members who are involved in this process for taking the necessary measures and taking the initiative to smooth the path to democracy despite many adversities in the past one year, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Wednesday.

He was addressing a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan political office in Dhaka, reports BSS.

Mirza Fakhrul said that BNP welcomes the announcement of the election date in February 2026. BNP believes that this historic announcement will overcome the political deadlock in Bangladesh and pave the way for the transition to democracy, he added.

The secretary general said BNP believes that the government and the Election Commission will take all measures to make the election fair, free, impartial and acceptable to all.

He urged all political parties and the people to make this election successful, institutionalise democracy and form an effective national parliament.

Mirza Fakhrul further said that BNP is praying for eternal peace of the departed souls of the martyrs of the July Uprising and wishes early recovery of the injured.

He urged the government to take measures for the full compensation and better treatment of the families of the martyrs.

He said BNP expresses its sincere thanks and gratitude to Tarique Rahman for successfully leading the democratic movement for eight long years.

The Secretary General said, "Let us build a prosperous Bangladesh dreamt by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the democratic Bangladesh of the lifelong struggle of the national leader Begum Khaleda Zia, and the modern, humane, democratic Bangladesh of the young leader Tarique Rahman. Let us fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people."

Welcoming the interim government for rolling out a roadmap for the next general election, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman sought on Wednesday public support for the party to implement reform proposals.

Virtually addressing a rally organised by BNP in front of its Nayapaltan central office marking the first anniversary of the July Uprising, Tarique said his party has already presented its vision before people, outlining how it would govern, run the state and politics, if entrusted with state power.

“And the interim government has proposed reforms in consultation with all democratic political parties, and BNP seeks public support to implement all these programmes for the welfare of the country and its people,” he said.

“The interim government yesterday announced a timeframe for holding the (national) election with the aim of establishing a democratic government accountable to the people in the fascist-free Bangladesh. The government has unveiled the July Charter in order to implement people’s will. We welcome these initiatives to implement,” he said.

Tarique Rahman made the remarks while virtually addressing a rally, organised by BNP in front of its Nayapaltan central office in the capital to mark the first anniversary of the 2024 July Mass Uprising.

He said Bangladesh’s democracy-loving people have had to wait for a long time for this historic moment as they are currently passing through a crucial transition on the journey of establishing democratic and political rights for people.

Turning to the repressive acts carried out by the fascist regime, Tarique said over 1,500 people were killed during the 2024 mass uprising alone.

Noting that the current moment presents a great opportunity for democracy-loving citizens to establish their rights, the BNP leader said if this opportunity can be seized to ensure political harmony, political and economic empowerment of the people, then no one will have the opportunity to establish fascism anymore in the future.

“In exchange for the lives of our brothers, sisters, children and relatives, no one will ever have to see events like the bloody 2024. I would like to draw the attention of every citizen, regardless of religion or caste, to say that it is time for you as a citizen to make a decision to establish your own rights, to ensure the safety of your family, to establish a safe Bangladesh for the present and future generations,” he added.

The BNP acting chairman urged people, regardless of political affiliation, to remember one thing that no one was safe and their all democratic and political rights were grabbed during the fascist regime. “The entire country had been turned into a barbaric prison – Aynaghar (a secret prison) -- for the democracy-loving people,” he said.

So, without democracy and the rule of law, no one -- whether man or woman, minority or majority -- can stay safe, he said.

“To ensure democracy and the rule of law, to establish the authority of the people in the state and government - the task is to properly implement and practice our democratic political rights, which we have earned with our blood,” Tarique added.

Pointing at different political parties, he said differences of opinion on various issues are natural, but these things should be resolved through discussions. “We, pro-democratic political parties, should never turn our backs on each other in the national parliament; rather , we need to stay united on the question of the national interests.”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also spoke at the rally.

The rally was part of BNP’s month-long celebration of the July mass uprising of 2024 and was followed by a procession through adjacent streets.

BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said everyone needs to be united in national interest, and pro-democracy political parties should not stop communicating with each other.

"There will be differences between political parties on various issues, but those should be resolved through discussion," he said while addressing the party's victory rally virtually on Wednesday.

The rally, held at the BNP's central office in the capital's Nayapaltan, marked the first anniversary of the July Uprising.

"Everyone must come together in the national interest because Bangladesh belongs to all of us, regardless of our religion, philosophy, or political beliefs," he told supporters.

Referring to the BNP's 31-point reform agenda, Mr Tarique said the party is prepared to govern in line with those reforms if elected by the people. "No matter which party one supports, we must remember that during the fascist regime, none of us were safe. Not even our children were secure.

"Our right to vote was taken away, and democratic freedoms were crushed. The entire country became a prison for those who demanded democracy," he said.

He stressed that the only way to ensure democracy and the rule of law is to uphold and practice the political rights earned through the sacrifices of countless martyrs.

Mr Tarique also welcomed the interim government's announcement of the July Declaration and the election schedule. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, and Salahuddin Ahmed also addressed the pre-procession rally, presided over by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The victory rally and subsequent procession began from the BNP central office and moved towards Shahbagh, passing through Bijoynagar, Purana Paltan, the National Press Club, and Matsya Bhaban intersections.

Thousands of party supporters from across the capital joined the event, causing severe traffic congestion across several major city roads. Commuters were seen walking long distances, while many remained stuck on buses for hours.

At the time, he also said that international interest in the BNP has grown and that the BNP will participate in the upcoming election under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.

Regarding Tarique Rahman’s recent meeting with the US Chargé d’Affaires to Bangladesh Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson in London, Humayun Kabir said that it was a courtesy meeting.

However, the discussion included topics such as the country’s political situation, Tarique Rahman’s perspective, and his plans for governing the state if elected.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has indicated that the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will be Bangladesh’s prime minister if it wins the next election.

Speaking at an event organised by the pro-BNP Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) event on Saturday, Fakhrul addressed Tarique, who joined the event virtually from London, as the “future prime minister” and drew his attention to the country’s healthcare problems, reports bdnews24.com.

In a televised address to the nation marking the July Uprising Day on Aug 5, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced that the next national election would be held before Ramadan in February.

Later, on Friday, Tarique met virtually with leaders of the BNP and its allies.

Highlighting challenges and obstacles faced by medical professionals in pursuing their goals in Bangladesh, he said: “Today, not only is our acting chairman present, but also our future leader, our future helmsman, our future prime minister. I want to draw his attention to this matter.

“His wife [Zubaida Rahman] is also a renowned doctor. I believe he will treat this matter with great importance, because providing healthcare to 180 million people is an enormous responsibility.”

At that point, the entire auditorium broke into loud applause, congratulating Tarique.

The DAB held its national council at the auditorium of Willes Little Flower School and College in Dhaka's Kakrail.

The event’s chief guest was Tarique, who addressed the council virtually.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday night said the party has full confidence in the honesty and integrity of the advisers to the interim government.

In a statement to the media, he strongly denied any BNP link to recent media reports about allegations of corruption against some advisers of the interim government.

He said a report was published in newspapers quoting a former secretary as claiming that eight advisers are involved in corruption.

“I want to make it very clear that this is not our statement, and the BNP has no connection with it. We respect all the advisers, including the Chief Adviser of the interim government. We trust their honesty and integrity,” Fakhrul said.

Some newspapers, including the Daily Prothom Alo, published reports of corruption allegations against eight advisers quoting ABM Abdus Sattar, who is known as the personal secretary to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Fakhrul said he heard that a former secretary made such comments about the advisers. “If he made those remarks, it was entirely his personal matter and the BNP has no link to it in any way.”

He said the responsibility for those comments lies solely with the person who made them, and the party has no involvement in the matter.

Speaking at a seminar on Friday at BIAM Auditorium in the capital, Abdus Sattar, who is also the General Secretary of the Officers Club and President of the Anti-Discrimination Employees Unity Forum, brought the corruption allegations against the advisers without mentioning any names.

He said intelligence agencies have evidence of corruption against at least eight advisers who came to power through the blood of the July movement.

He also claimed that Tk 2.0 billion was found in the bank account of an APS (assistant personal secretary) of one of the advisers, but no steps had been taken in this regard.

Sattar also questioned the appointment of people without proper experience to important ministries such as Health, Local Government and Youth and Sports.

Govt accountability requires establishment of democratic practices: Tarique

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday said ensuring government’s accountability to people requires the establishment of democratic practices across all sectors of the country.

"The people of Bangladesh have many expectations from BNP. One of the most fundamental among them is to establish a proper system and ensure accountability," he said while virtually addressing the council session of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB).

The BNP leader said people from all walks of life are now looking forward to seeing a positive change and a transformation in the state system. "If we can gradually build a transparent, fair and democratic system everywhere, we will be able to ensure accountability at all levels," he said.

Tarique said it is not entirely true that there is no democratic practice within political parties. "Today's DAB council proves that the claim of no democratic practice inside political parties is not entirely accurate."

He mentioned that since DAB has begun practising democracy, BNP will also be able to gradually implement democratic practices at various levels within the party. "I firmly believe that, Insha'Allah, we can gradually introduce accountability at all levels — from local to national — across the country," the BNP leader said.

Drawing from his long experience of living in London, he explained that in the UK, doctors who face abuse receive justice, and if patients or others are denied proper service, they too receive justice, as there is accountability in the state system. "Such a system of accountability is needed in Bangladesh."

The BNP leader mentioned that although Bangladesh gained independence more than 50 years ago, the democratic process has been repeatedly obstructed here.

"Unfortunately, I have to spend many years abroad... I have an experience that since there is accountability in this country (UK), when a patient goes to the government hospital, he gets a minimum service,” he said.

Tarique said it is not only about patients, but about everyone -- wherever they go, they should receive the service they are entitled to. "This is because, through years of effort, they built a system of accountability in society and in the state system. But this has not yet been developed in Bangladesh."

The National Council-2025 of DAB, a pro-BNP platform for doctors, was held on the premises of Willes Little Flower School and College in the capital's Kakrail area.

Establishing people’s rule now main challenge: Tarique Rahman

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday said the main challenge for the nation is now to establish people’s rule and ensure their political and voting rights.

“The main goal of the movement was to establish the political rights of people and protect individual freedom. The autocratic regime fled the country in the face of the movement. Now, it is essential to establish people’s rule and ensure political rights. The key way to achieve this is by creating a system where people can directly exercise their voting rights,” he said.

Speaking virtually at the Rajshahi city unit BNP’s biennial conference, the BNP leader said that through such voting, people will decide who will govern the country for a specific term in the future.

He said the interim government is gradually moving in that direction as it has announced that a national election will be held before the upcoming Ramadan.

Tarique said this election will mark the first step towards realising people’s rights.

He, however, said holding elections and forming a government through voting is not enough.

Tarique said people want to know from BNP leaders what the future of the country looks like, what BNP plans to do next because the people of Bangladesh want to place their trust in the party.

He acknowledged the many challenges ahead for the country in the days to come to rebuild the state institutions.

“If BNP is able to form the next government, it will need to rebuild the state, as the autocratic regime destroyed education, justice, law and order, the economy, and healthcare in pursuit of its self-interest,” the BNP leader said.

Stating that BNP was the first to propose state reform, he said BNP presented a 31-point outline containing various reform proposals nearly two and a half years ago during the autocratic period.

The BNP leader said many of the ideas currently being discussed by the interim government’s reform commission were already in the 31-point outline because BNP believed well in advance that the nation needed structural reform.

Tarique accused the Awami League’s autocratic government of organising the healthcare system in such a way that people were forced to go to a neighbouring country for treatment.

He said the Awami regime deliberately ruined hospitals in the country and created scopes for siphoning money abroad in the name of treatment in the neighbouring country.

“We now have to develop our own doctors and nurses so that the people of the country get quality medical services in hospitals in our country,” the BNP leader said.

Tarique said the autocratic government was forced to flee in the face of a public movement after holding power for over a decade.

He said they carried out enforced disappearances, killings and filed false cases against opposition voices, including many present at the event. “Even family members not involved in politics were harassed.”

The BNP leader said not only political activists, but also ordinary people who raised their voices against the autocratic regime were victims of severe oppression.

Tarique said the election system was destroyed at every level, the judiciary was weakened, law enforcement was politicised, and the economy was damaged. “Under the name of mega development, massive corruption and money laundering took place.”

He said jobs must be created for the youth through skill development and education reform.

The BNP leader said small industries must grow, the justice system must be faster, and agriculture needs support with timely fertiliser, fair crop prices, and affordable goods.

Tarique said only BNP can rebuild the country, and people now believe in that. “But to face the challenges ahead, unity is essential.”

He urged party leaders and workers to stay united and maintain public trust through good work and a positive attitude.

BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Abdus Salam inaugurated the council in the morning at the historic field adjacent to the Madrasa ground in Rajshahi.

First step towards people’s rights to be realised through elections: Tarique Rahman

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman virtually joined the biennial conference, held after nearly one and a half decades, of the Rajshahi city BNP as the chief guest on 10 August 2025 Prothom Alo

Now it is necessary to establish people’s governance and political rights as the autocrat has fled the country, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has remarked.

“We see that the interim government is gradually moving in that direction. The government has announced that, InshaAllah, the national election will be held in the country before the upcoming Ramadan. Through holding this national election, the first step towards realising the people’s rights will be implemented,” he said.

Tarique Rahman made these remarks on Sunday afternoon while virtually joining the biennial conference, held after nearly one and a half decades, of the Rajshahi city BNP as the chief guest.

The conference took place on a road beside the central Eidgah in Pathanpara area of Rajshahi town.

Stating that the reconstitution of the country’s fragile institutions as one of BNP’s main goals, Tarique Rahman said at the conference, “The incumbent interim government has formed a reform commission. As you have read in newspapers, the discussions held in the commission with various political parties, and the reforms proposed, most of those resemble the 31-point state reform agenda that the BNP presented to the nation two and a half years ago.”

“Most of the reform commission’s proposals are similar to the blueprint put forward by the BNP. The BNP was the first to present the well-known 31-point state reform agenda because we believe that if this country is to move forward, and if the lives of the people are to improve, several reforms in the state’s institutions must be undertaken,” he added.

He further stated that upon coming to power, BNP will initiate an extensive programme for state reform and reconstitution.

The BNP acting chairman added that the previous autocratic government destroyed all constitutional and state institutions. Every institution, from the electoral system to the judiciary, the economy, health and education sectors, the law enforcement agencies, and the economic system, must be reformed in order to rebuild the country.

1754874462046.png

Addressing the party leaders and activists, Tarique Rahman said, “The people of the country are now looking towards the BNP. They believe that only the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, only your beloved party BNP, can gradually rebuild this country.”

He stressed that merely holding elections is not enough, nor is forming a government through the vote. There are many challenges ahead which must be confronted; otherwise, the country will fall behind and the people will suffer further.

Calling for unity among the leaders and activists present at the conference, Tarique Rahman said, “We must earn the trust of the people and win the upcoming election to undertake the task of state reconstruction. Today, through this council, we take two pledges: first, that we shall, InshaAllah, remain united; second, that we shall, InshaAllah, rebuild the country by earning the people’s trust.”

Highlighting the adverse effects of the Farakka barrage on agriculture and the environment of the Rajshahi region, Tarique Rahman said, “We’ve witnessed how the Padma River is drying up in Rajshahi city, Rajshahi district, and the Rajshahi division because of the Farakka barrage. We see how the once fertile, green, and lush areas are gradually turning into deserts due to the lack of water, the lack of Padma’s water. We must strive to take this matter to the international court, if necessary, and to the United Nations. We must secure our rightful share of water.”

The conference was presided over by freedom fighter Ershad Ali, convener of Rajshahi city BNP, with member secretary Mamun-ur-Rashid as the moderator.

Among those who spoke were BNP Chairperson’s adviser and coordinator of Rajshahi Division BNP, freedom fighter Abdus Salam; BNP Chairperson’s adviser Mizanur Rahman Minu; the party’s Secretary for Forestry and Environment Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul; party Secretary for Relief and Rehabilitation Shafiqul Haque Milan; Central Organising Secretary (Rajshahi Division) Syed Shaheen Shawkat; Co-organising Secretary Obaidur Rahman Chandan; and convener of Rajshahi District BNP Abu Saeed Chand, among others.

Tarique Rahman urges BNP followers to stand united against ‘conspiracies’

Alleging that various plots are underway to derail the process of restoring democracy and people’s voting rights, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday urged his party leaders and activists to stay united and uphold public trust by refraining from any wrongdoing to foil all conspiracies.

“The hopes and plans of BNP are to move the country forward and improve the living standards of people. But conspiracies are slowly being hatched to stop these plans from being carried out. At the same time, attempts are being made by various quarters to block the country’s return to democracy and deny people their right to vote,” he said.

Speaking virtually at the biennial council of the BNP Naogaon District Council at Naogaon Convention Centre, the BNP leader reminded his party colleagues that just a few days after the fall of the autocratic regime, he had warned them that the next national election would be the toughest in Bangladesh’s history.

“A year ago, I said invisible forces were active and various plots were going on…Yes, the road ahead will be tough. Through newspapers and other sources, many of you now realise that perhaps Tarique Rahman was not so wrong after all,” he said.

The BNP leader said their party can lead the country in the right direction successfully, following its plans by overcoming all challenges and foiling conspiracies if every single leader and activist in the BNP family does just two things.

“Shall I tell you what those two things are? Keep intact the trust and love of the people, avoid any actions that damage the party’s image, and stay united like a family. If you do these things, we can defeat the conspiracies,” he said.

Tarique said the real capital and greatest asset of a political party is the support, love and trust of the people, urging all leaders and activists not to do anything that can harm the party's popularity.

He said all leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated bodies across the country must be alert to one thing: “We must never do anything that damages people’s trust, faith and love for us. We must refrain completely -- 100% -- from such actions.”

The BNP leader also urged his party colleagues to keep an eye on one another to ensure that no one engages in any activity that could harm the party.

Tarique reminded party members of past struggles, saying many BNP activists had suffered under previous regimes, facing false cases, arrests, torture, and even losing family members while in jail.

“Some were taken to attend their parents’ funerals in handcuffs. We have leaders and activists who died without treatment, handcuffed, in hospital corridors. You are the workers and leaders of such a party. So we should not do anything that can dent the party’s image and reduce the people’s trust,” he said.

Tarique also warned BNP leaders and followers about opportunists, whom he called ‘ghughu’ (pigeon), who only appear when the party is close to power.

“These people don’t care about the party. They only think about their own benefit. They will come, use you, tarnish your reputations, exploit the party for their personal gain, and then disappear in times of trouble. We must be careful about them.”

He urged all to remain vigilant so such opportunists cannot infiltrate the party or misuse it for their own benefit. “Keep these opportunists at bay. They only care about themselves and belong to no one. You must keep a watchful eye on them.”

Besides, Tarique said, every soldier of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and Chairperson Khaleda Zia must remain united like brothers and sisters to stop the conspiracies against people’s rights and the establishment of democracy, and to implement the 31-point plan for the country and its people.

“At any cost, no one should fail to maintain unity. I urge you to take a vow in Allah’s name that we will remain united,” he said.

Tarique encouraged Naogaon BNP leaders to work together when selecting new leadership through this council. “Let’s choose leaders who can carry the party forward with honesty, courage and dedication. Today, you made two promises — to stay united and to protect people's trust in BNP. Please keep those promises.”

He said the party has many plans for the country’s development and ensuring the welfare of the nation, as they do politics for the people.

Tarique said ordinary people come to BNP leaders wanting to know about the country’s situation and future action plans as they rely on the party.

He said BNP leaders and supporters have always stood beside the people during difficult times, including during Covid, floods and natural disasters.

Tarique said while reforms are now being discussed as part of the interim government’s initiative, the BNP presented a 31-point outline containing most of these reform proposals two and a half years ago, during the rule of the autocratic regime.

The BNP leader said they, together with other like-minded parties, gave those proposals as the party has experience in governing the country and developing its various sectors.

Thinking about the country’s people and their welfare, he said they felt the need for reforms to overhaul all sectors and institutions, as the fascist regime destroyed them for its own interests.
