‘No point complaining about China, we need to do better’: Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar

Hemali Chhapia / Jan 31, 2024, 08:15 IST

Mumbai: Acknowledging that China was a global superpower, and would shape things in its favour, external affairs minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said India need not be scared of such “competitive politics”.

“The answer to that is not to complain about what China is doing. The answer is, okay, you are doing it. Let me do better than that,” he told students at Indian Institute of Management-Mumbai, where he spoke about competitive politics, the Israel-Hamas conflict, Red Sea crisis and his second book ‘Why Bharat matters’.

The Union minister comments come in light of China strengthening its ties in the region with the Republic of Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The minister further predicted that in the next three to four years, a large number of companies from the semiconductor industry will move to India.

“Every country has problems in the neighbourhood,” said Jaishankar, adding that eventually they reach an understanding. “It is in the nature of politics that we take strong stands, but diplomacy works differently,” he said when questioned about strained ties with Maldives.
