Fazlur Rehman claims establishment responsible for ‘rigging’

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has pinned the responsibility for the alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections on the establishment.

Speaking to the media in Peshawar, he said: “If they think they haven’t rigged the polls, then their May 9 narrative has been buried and the people voted for traitors.”

When asked if he foresaw another general election this year, the Maulana said there was no point in holding polls if the establishment remained involved in the process.

PML-N, PPP to extend alliance for govt formation in Balochistan: Dar

Former finance minister Ishaq Dar has said the PML-N and PPP will extend their alliance for the election of the chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker in Balochistan.

SIC did not even try to convince me to not vote for Shehbaz, says Bilawal

Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said that the party had decided to vote for “those who had come to ask” for the prime minister’s election.

He said that the Sunni Ittehad Council, which is now home to PTI-backed independents, did not ask for his vote. “Now how are they objecting that someone is forming the government? […] they were not in any position to form a government in any situation,” he said.

“They decided themselves that they will not ask. So the only option we have is to give a chance to those asking […] PPP will give its input using the parliamentary system,” he said.

“We are thankful to the SIC, they had Maryam Nawaz elected chief minister unopposed. They also did not oppose election of Murad Ali Shah. They did not ask for my vote or convince me not to vote for Shehbaz Sharif, so I think we should thank the PTI and SIC that Shehbaz will also be elected unopposed.”

SIC entitled to reserved women and minority seats, says PTI’s Barrister Gohar

PTI leader Barrister Gohar Khan has said the allocation of reserved women and minority seats is a right of the Sunni Ittehad Council.

In a post on X, he said 86 PTI-backed MNAs had joined the SIC while 107 Punjab MPAs and 90 KP MPAs were officially members of the SIC.

“Getting reserved seats is the SIC’s right which cannot be given to any other political party,” Gohar said.

Speaker does not have power to summon NA session: PTI’s Babar Awan

PTI leader Babar Awan has said that the power to summon a session of the National Assembly only lies with President Arif Alvi and not with speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

During an informal conversation with reporters in Islamabad, Awan said, “According to the Constitution, the president can summon the National Assembly’s session. The speaker has no authority to summon the session.”

He further asserted that summoning the session would be equivalent to going against the Constitution.

“If any government will be formed [in this manner], it would be against the Constitution. The verdict of the case about Qasim Suri’s ruling is present; a speaker can only adjourn a session,” Awan added.

Hearing on allocation of reserved seats adjourned till tomorrow

The Election Commission of Pakistan has adjourned till tomorrow the hearing on the Sunni Ittehad Council’s plea seeking allocation of reserved seats as well as the six petitions against this.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja headed a five-member bench which heard petitions by PML-N’s Azam Nazeer Tarar, PPP’s Farooq Naik and SIC’s counsel Gohar Khan and Ali Zafar.

Zafar stated that he had sought the allocation of reserved seats for the SIC, wondering why the other parties had decided to show up.

PML-N’s Tarar argued that the SIC had not won a single seat in the National Assembly, therefore, the independents that had joined the party could not be given reserved seats.
