Sakhawat seeks S Korean investment in jute, textile sectors

Jute and textile adviser Brigadier General (retired) M Sakhawat Hussain on Wednesday urged South Korea to come up with investments in jute and textile sectors, as its envoy Park Young-sik called on him.

‘Jute Diversification Promotion Centre is working to produce multipurpose jute products, while steps are also being taken to enrich the jute and textile sector through research,’ he said during the meeting with the envoy at the shipping ministry.

Sakhawat Hussain, also adviser of the shipping ministry, mentioned the jute diversification as a very promising sector and urged the envoy to invest in this sector for mutual benefits, said a ministry press release.

He said that the present government had taken steps to introduce jute bags instead of polythene to prevent environmental pollution.

Production of ‘Sonali Bag’ from jute is on the way, he said, adding that the demand for eco-friendly jute and jute products was increasing both in the country and abroad.

Applauding the government’s initiative to stop the use of polythene to prevent environmental pollution, the Korean ambassador said that jute was environmentally friendly as a natural fibre.

Park Yong-sik expressed his country’s eagerness to cooperate in the development of Bangladesh’s jute sector.

Referring to the visit of a South Korean delegation to see investment opportunities and possibilities two years ago, he said that such efforts would continue in the future.

The ambassador also noted Bangladesh’s bright potential in the shipping industry.

The adviser also urged Korean investors to invest in the country’s ship industry, saying that more projects of the ministry were underway with South Korea.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to Bangladesh Park Young-sik had paid a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Md Touhid Hossain and expressed his willingness to work closely with Bangladesh to further strengthen the "excellent" bilateral relations between the two countries.

During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, various issues of mutual interest were discussed including trade and investment, development cooperation, ready-made garments sector, EPS workers, people-to people exchange, Rohingya issue and others.

The ambassador congratulated the foreign affairs adviser on assuming the new position.

The adviser thanked the South Korean government for the positive remarks towards the newly formed interim government and putting confidence in the ability of the government in restoring peace and stability in the country, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He expressed satisfaction on the existing bilateral relations and recent upward trend of the volume of bilateral trade between the two friendly countries.

The adviser appreciated Seoul for continuously being one of the major foreign investors in Bangladesh.

Both sides expressed satisfaction for maintaining close cooperation on the international arena, to uphold global peace and security, promote free trade and fight the adverse effects of climate change and supporting each other in international fora.

The adviser also thanked the South Korean government for extending humanitarian support to the Rohingya people sheltered in Bangladesh.​

Bangladesh currently offers a favourable environment for trade and commerce, and South Korean investors are likely to increase their investments in the country, says Commerce Adviser Sk Bashiruddin.

During a courtesy meeting with South Korea’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr Park Young-sik, on Monday afternoon at the Adviser’s office, he expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral ties and fostering investment opportunities, reports UNB.

The discussion centred on enhancing bilateral trade, exploring the possibility of a free trade agreement (FTA), and expanding South Korean investments in Bangladesh.

Bashiruddin highlighted that the recent student-led uprising in Bangladesh has opened new horizons of potential, underscoring that the nation cannot afford to regress.

He said the government’s achievements in its first 100 days have met public expectations.

The Adviser emphasised that a Bangladesh-Korea FTA would be mutually beneficial, leading to expanded trade relations and improved people-to-people connections. He encouraged the South Korean Ambassador to focus on increasing investments in Bangladesh’s light engineering and leather industries, as well as in the country’s export processing zones (EPZs).

Ambassador Park commended Bangladesh’s large youth population, noting that South Korea is eager to contribute to their technological skill development.

He shared details of South Korea’s ongoing initiatives to create a skilled workforce through technical training centres.

The Ambassador also pointed out that, unlike other nations that target select sectors for investment in Bangladesh, South Korea has already diversified its investments across multiple sectors.

He assured that South Korean investments in Bangladesh would continue to grow in the future.​
