A Bangladeshi man was shot dead by India's Border Security Force (BSF) near Chuadanga border on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 5:00pm on the Indian side of the border near Pillar No 70 at Goyeshpur in Jibannagar upazila, according to the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB).

The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam Shahid, 35, of Goyeshpur village.

Shahidul's wife, Nasrin Akhter, said he went out for work in the morning and returned home around 1:30pm. Later in the afternoon, he went to a nearby border but did not return.

"During Maghrib prayer, I heard that BSF had shot my husband and taken him away," she said.

Saiful Islam, a member of the local union parishad, said Shahidul worked as a day labourer in the fields. "We heard that BSF personnel shot him dead after Asr prayer and took his body away," he added.

Lt Col Md Rafiqul Alam, commanding officer of the 58-BGB Battalion in Maheshpur, said they immediately contacted BSF after receiving information about the shooting. Initially, BSF officials told the BGB that Shahidul had been shot and taken to a hospital. Shahidul went to India for drug smuggling.

However, around 8:00pm, BSF's 32 Battalion Commandant Sujit Kumar informed BGB that Shahidul had died, said Lt Col Md Rafiqul Alam.

His body has been handed over to the Indian police. After the autopsy, the BSF will hand over the body to the Bangladesh authorities, added the commanding officer quoting the BSF.

The foreign adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh has said that India is the only country in the world which kills unarmed civilians at the border. Bangladesh is the victim of Indian atrocities at the border.

I think the time has come to push out Indians illegally employed in jobs in Bangladesh. Matching the numbers Indians push to Bangladesh. There won't be any dearth of Indian illegals in Bangladesh for sure.

For each Rohingya they send us - we can send them one Indian making ten lakh a month.

If India can show legalities the middle finger, then why do we need to be so saintly?

A well articulated reply from you, Bilal bhai. Indians are making billions of dollars from Bangladesh but they hardly acknowledge it.

Yes - Bangladesh is probably the third or even 2nd largest source for India's remittance.

Modi wants to hide this as much as possible.

This came out multiple times from Indian sources like NASSCOM.

The reason for Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to hire Indian nationals is beyond me. We have our own graduates who are capable of performing tasks at a lower salary than their Indian counterparts. The government should impose a ban on Indian nationals so that our own graduates get jobs in textile, pharmaceutical and other industries in the country.

Local government, rural development and cooperatives, and housing and public works adviser Adilur Rahman Khan on Tuesday said that the people of Bangladesh want an end to border killings by the Indian Border Security Force.

Adilur made the remarks at Gulshan-2 during the unveiling ceremony of the nameplate of the road from Gulshan-2 to Pragati Sarani, named ‘Felani Avenue’, organised by Dhaka North City Corporation in memory of Bangladeshi teenage girl Felani, who was shot dead by the Indian BSF along the Kurigram border in 2011.

He said, ‘Our sister Felani lost her life while hanging on a barbed-wire fence. We are naming this road to remind everyone of what kind of brutality was inflicted upon her, and to ensure that this cruelty is remembered every day,’ he said.

He said, ‘At the same time, we are presenting to the conscience of the world that a heinous situation like border killings continues to exist along Bangladesh’s borders. It is precisely for this reason that, as the current government wants to end all border killings, we have inaugurated this road in Felani’s name today, on Victory Day.’

At the Felani Avenue nameplate unveiling ceremony, Local Government Division secretary Md. Rezaul Maksud Jahedi said, ‘The killing of Felani was not merely a murder; it was a clear incident of human rights violation.’

At the same event, DNCC administrator Mohammad Ejaz said, ‘This road has been named after Felani as a symbol of protest and of maintaining our dignity and honour as a nation.’

Felani Khatun was shot dead by BSF on January 7, 2011, at the Anantapur border point in Kurigram’s Fulbari upazila while returning to Bangladesh with her father. Her body was left hanging on the barbed-wire fence for hours, sparking widespread outrage at home and abroad.

Since then, various groups have repeatedly demanded that the road in front of the Indian High Commission in Gulshan be named after Felani.

On September 13, 2024, the Peoples’ Activist Coalition symbolically named the road ‘Shaheed Felani Sarak’ and installed an unofficial signboard in protest against border killings.

Now, the interim government has officially renamed the stretch as Felani Avenue.
