A Dhaka magistrate court on Wednesday ordered former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque to be shown arrested in a case filed with Banani Police Station over a murder attempt and violations of the Explosives Act linked to the 2024 July Mass Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order following a virtual hearing.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka special judge court showed former minister Rashed Khan Menon arrested in a case filed over alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers at Wills Little Flower School and College in the city.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order after police produced Menon before the court and sought permission to show him arrested in the case. The court later sent him back to jail.

Khairul has now been shown arrested in nine cases. Although he secured bail from the High Court in eight of those cases, the latest shown arrest has prevented his release from jail.

Earlier, on July 2, Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Banani Police Station submitted a petition seeking to show the former chief justice arrested in the case.

According to the case statement, protesters participating in the July movement came under attack while marching from Mohakhali towards Shahbagh on August 4, 2024. The attackers allegedly opened fire and hurled crude bombs, leaving 25 to 30 people, including Ujjal Mia, injured.

After the incident, Ujjal filed a case with Banani Police Station on charges of attempted murder and under the Explosives Act.

Detective Branch police arrested Khairul from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24, 2025. He has remained in jail since then.

The case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on December 22, 2025 against Menon, a former member of the school’s governing body, and 19 others over the alleged recruitment of 13 teachers through forgery and other irregularities.

According to the case statement, an illegal recruitment board was formed at the institution despite the fact that the special governing committee lacked the authority under existing rules to constitute such a board.

The complaint also alleged that the candidate securing the highest marks in the written examination was denied the opportunity to appear in the viva voce.

It further stated that appointment and joining letters were issued before completion of the recruitment process.

After the July uprising that toppled the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, Menon, also president of Workers Party Bangladesh, was arrested on August 22, 2024 and has remained in jail since then in connection with other cases.​

Bangladesh hires Dubai law firm to seek cancellation of Benazir’s bail

The Bangladesh government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to pursue the cancellation of bail granted to former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed, home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday.

He disclosed the move amid media reports that Benazir had been released from a Dubai jail after securing conditional bail.

Benazir was arrested in Dubai after Interpol issued a red notice against him at the request of Bangladesh Police in February in connection with a corruption case.

Following his arrest, the UAE authorities sought the necessary documents from the Bangladesh government to process his extradition. Dhaka later sent the required documents seeking his return.

Salahuddin said the law firm appointed in the United Arab Emirates had been instructed to take legal steps to seek cancellation of Benazir’s bail.

Speaking to reporters after attending a programme in the capital on Sunday, state minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam said the government was maintaining close communication with the UAE authorities and expressed optimism that Benazir Ahmed would be brought back to Bangladesh soon.

She said the two countries had exchanged the necessary documents as part of the ongoing extradition process.

The UAE authorities are proceeding in line with their domestic laws, while Bangladesh will take the next steps through due legal process, she added.

According to media reports, a UAE court granted Benazir bail on July 27 and he was released on July 30 after completing the required legal formalities. Under the bail conditions, his passport has been retained by the court and he cannot leave the UAE without permission.

New Age staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that Salahuddin told journalists at Rajshahi Police Lines he had learned about Benazir’s release while attending a programme and had immediately contacted the home secretary.

‘I have just come to know about it. While I was on the stage, I immediately spoke to the home secretary,’ he said.

The minister said the home secretary had already communicated with Bangladesh’s ambassador to the UAE and that the government had appointed a law firm there several days ago to handle the legal proceedings.

‘We have instructed the law firm to move for cancellation of the bail. This is the latest update,’ he said.

Salahuddin said he had been informed that Benazir was granted bail on the condition that he would not leave the UAE.

‘I have asked for a certified copy of the court order to know the exact conditions. We have instructed our law firm to pursue cancellation of the bail.’

Asked about the government’s next steps, the home minister said the authorities would continue to pursue all available legal options.

‘We have taken legal steps by appointing a law firm. We are making every effort and hope we will be able to secure cancellation of the bail and, eventually, bring him back,’ Salahuddin said.

Benazir, a former influential law enforcement official during the Awami League government’s tenure, was arrested in Dubai based on the Interpol red notice issued at Bangladesh’s request.

On June 14, the home minister informed parliament that Dubai Police had arrested Benazir on June 12.

He said the directorate general of the Federal Criminal Police of the Abu Dhabi National Central Bureau had informed the Bangladesh government of the arrest by email.

Benazir and his family reportedly left Bangladesh on May 4, 2024, amid allegations of amassing illegal wealth and laundering money.

According to Police Headquarters officials, he is facing 17 cases, including allegations linked to the July 2024 mass uprising and six corruption cases.​
