A Bandarban court on Thursday remanded 52 suspected members and sympathisers of the armed national minority group Kuki-Chin National Front in police custody for interrogation for two days.

Judicial magistrate Nazmul Hussain passed the order after a remand hearing in the case filed for the abduction of Sonali Bank manager Nezam Uddin from a mosque at Ruma on April 2 in an attempt to loot the bank vault.

The court also allowed the investigators to interrogate a pregnant female suspect at jail gate.

The Bandarban court police inspector, AK Fazlul Haque, said that four of them were remanded in a case filed by the imam of the mosque from where Sonali Bank manager Nezam Uddin was abducted on April 2, while 48 others were remanded in another case filed in connection with the abduction.

Nezam Uddin was rescued on April 4 through a negotiation by the Rapid Action Battalion.

On April 2, the KNF tried to loot Tk 1.5 crore from the vault of Sonali Bank's Ruma upazila branch. In failure, they kidnapped the branch manager, Nezam Uddin, who was rescued two days later.

They also carried out robberies at Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban on April 3.

They looted at least 14 firearms, over 400 bullets, and Tk 17 lakh in cash during the attacks in Ruma and Thanchi.

The security forces have so far arrested 58 people in their joint operation in connection with the incidents.

The police have separately arrested 14 others.

Police officials in Bandarban said that a total of nine cases were filed with Ruma and Thanchi police stations following the incidents of robberies, arms looting, and abduction between April 2 and 3.

Army man killed in KNF ambush
Muktadir Rashid 19 April, 2024, 22:23

At least one army corporal was killed and two others, including a junior commissioned officer, were severely injured in an ambush allegedly carried out by ethnic armed group Kuki-Chin National Front in a remote Bandarban area on Friday afternoon.

The police confirmed the death of Corporal Mohammad Rafik and said that JCO warrant officer Idrish Ali and soldier Milon were flown to the Combined Military Hospitals in Chattogram.

Officials in Dhaka and Chittagong Hill Tracts said that the incident took place near a passenger shed on the street near Paliprangsha Para Army camp at about 4:20pm.

The Inter Services Public Relation directorate made no comment or statement until 9:30pm over the causalities.

Ruma police officer-in-charge Md Shahjahan said that they learned that the KNF ambushed the army patrol in the afternoon, resulting in the causalities.

None, however, claimed responsibility of the attack.

The incident took place a day after a Bandarban court on Thursday remanded 52 suspected KNF members and sympathisers in police custody for interrogation for two days in the case filed over the abduction of Sonali Bank manager Nezam Uddin from a mosque at Ruma on April 2 in an attempt to loot the bank vault.

The court also allowed the investigators to interrogate a pregnant female suspect at jail gate.

On April 2, the KNF launched an attack to loot Tk 1.5 crore from the vault of Sonali Bank's Ruma upazila branch and abducted the branch manager Nezam Uddin in the aftermath of their failure to loot the cash. They, however, looted at least 14 firearms and over 400 bullets, injuring members of law enforcement agencies.

Nezam was rescued on April 4 through a negotiation by the Rapid Action Battalion.

Later on, on April 3, the KNF also looted Tk 17 lakh in cash from the Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban.

The security forces have so far arrested 58 people in their joint operation in connection with the incidents. The police have separately arrested 14 others.

Police officials in Bandarban said that a total of nine cases were filed with the Ruma and Thanchi police following the robberies, arms looting, and abduction in April 2โ€“3.

KNF media wing Colonel Solomon in their unverified social media page said on Friday that so far none of their armed members have been arrested by joint forces. It also claimed some innocent people who have no link to the KNF were arrested.

Those arrested people include college and university students, minors, pregnant women and breastfeeding women, government and private sector employees, farmers and religious leaders.

At least five soldiers and several other civilians have also been killed in the first six months of 2023, leading the government to initiate peace talks with the KNF.

First peace dialogues between the KNF and a delegation of the Bangladesh government were held at a remote village in Ruma upazila early November 2023, following a series of virtual meetings.

On March 12, 2023, the army's master warrant officer, Nazim Uddin, was shot dead and two others were injured after the KNF allegedly ambushed an army patrol in a remote area of Rawangchari upazila in Bandarban.

On April 7, 2023, the police recovered eight bodies of men in military camouflage in the hilly area of Rawangchari, several hours after local people heard the sounds of a 'gunfight.' The police identified them as KNF activists.

On May 8, 2023, three members of the Christian Bawm community, including a ward-level ruling Awami League leader, were found killed near a small village in Rawangchari upazila.

At least two army soldiersโ€”Touhidul Islam, 20, and Altab Hossain, 24โ€” were killed and two officers injured in an ambush and explosion in Bandarban on May 16 last year.

In February 2022, an exchange of fire at a remote village in Ruma upazila left senior warrant officer Habibur Rahman killed and soldier Firoz injured.

The so called human rights watchdog, Amnesty International, doesn't protest when Israel and the USA commit genocide against the innocent Palestinians in Gaza but they are very quick to send a letter to Bangladesh to express their concern about Bawm community in Chittagong Hill Tracts. Bangladesh security forces are conducting an anti terrorism drive in Chittagong Hill Tracts abiding by domestic and internal laws. So, Amnesty International should stop expressing concern about Bawm community because the Bangladesh security forces are taking actions only against Kuki Chin who are a terrorist outfit involved in murder, rape, and extortion.

End crackdown on Bawm community, Amnesty urges PM

Amnesty International today called upon the government to put an end to the crackdown against Bawm community and immediately release the arrested civilians in connection with the robberies at two banks allegedly by armed group Kuki-Chin National Front.

The human rights watchdog made the call in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It expressed concern that the indigenous Bawm people are at serious risk of suffering collective punishment as the authorities assumed that the entire Bawm community are either part of or are supporters of the Kuki Chin National Front (KNF).
