Walton to manufacture lithium-Ion batteries locally


Walton Hi-Tech Industries PLC, a leading electrical and electronics manufacturer in Bangladesh, is going to establish a manufacturing facility for high-quality lithium-ion cells, reducing import dependence and offering competitive, locally manufactured products, it said today.

"The initiative aims to establish a sophisticated manufacturing facility for high-quality lithium-ion cells, reducing import dependence and offering competitive, locally manufactured products, with commercial production expected to commence by mid-2026," Walton said after its board approved the scheme along with its third-quarter unaudited earnings.

Walton said its net profit fell around 8.5 percent year-on-year to Tk 696 crore for the July-March period of the financial year 2024-25 due to multiple factors.

High inflation and tighter global financial conditions impacted its operational environment.

Furthermore, increased material costs, a volatile global market, higher finance costs, and the devaluation of the Taka against foreign currencies have drastically inflated input costs, it said.

Also, a hike in the value-added tax (VAT) rate to 7.5 percent on refrigerators and the introduction of a 7.5 percent VAT on air conditioners have added to the cost pressures, said the company in a press release.

Consequently, Walton's operating profit margin for the July-March period of FY24-25 decreased to 22.09 percent from 24.73 percent in the same period last year.

The finance cost as a percentage of sales also rose to 7.29 percent from 6.14 percent, driven by increased borrowing costs and the devaluation of the local currency against the US dollar, the company said.

Walton's earnings per share stood at Tk 22.99 during the July-March period of this financial year, down from Tk 25.17 a year ago.

Its net operating cash flows per share for the nine months stood at a negative Tk 1.83, a significant drop from the positive Tk 22.88 in the previous year.

The company attributed this decline to a strategic shift in working capital management, prioritizing payments to suppliers using customer collections over bank borrowings.

Increased payments to suppliers and higher payments for income tax and VAT, aligned with anticipated sales growth, also contributed to this change.

However, Walton said it is optimistic about the fourth quarter of the current financial year, anticipating healthier profits due to the peak sales season.

Lithium Ion Batteries are being used by shipyards making submarines. When combined with AIP systems, such as fuel cells or Stirling engines, Lithium Ion Batteries can significantly extend a submarine's ability to operate underwater without surfacing for extended periods.

You are correct. This was a good move - to indigenize Li-Ion battery manufacturing locally and eventually military uses will be in line for implementation.

Of course commercial uses for electronics (and vehicle use) will parallel military uses well into the near present.
 

Walton plans Tk 114cr lithium battery factory
Says profits slipped in Q3 due to inflation, currency devaluation

Walton Hi-Tech Industries PLC, a leading electrical and electronic appliance manufacturer, has announced plans to establish a facility to manufacture lithium-ion cells at a cost of nearly Tk 114 crore.

Local availability of the rechargeable batteries, widely used in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and other applications, will reduce import dependence, the company said in a press release on April 27.

It will also generate new employment opportunities and exports alongside enabling technological growth, it said.

Commercial production is expected to commence by mid-2026, Walton said after its board approved the project along with its unaudited earnings in the third quarter of the ongoing fiscal year.

Its net profit dropped to around Tk 392 crore in the January-March quarter of fiscal year 2024-25 from nearly Tk 422 crore in the same period of the year prior.

Meanwhile, the company's earnings per share (EPS) dropped to Tk 12.94 from Tk 13.93 previously.

In case of the first nine months of the current fiscal year, Walton's net profit dropped by around 8.5 percent year-on-year to Tk 696 crore.

The company's EPS during this period stood at Tk 22.99, down from Tk 25.17 previously.

The listed company attributed a number of factors for the drop, including high inflation, volatile global financial conditions, an increase in material costs, high financing costs, and the devaluation of the taka against foreign currencies.

It also cited the hike in value added tax (VAT) on refrigerators to 7.5 percent and introduction of a 7.5 percent VAT on air conditioners.

But Walton was optimistic about the fourth quarter, touting it as the peak sales season.

As of March 31, 2025, sponsors and directors held 65.07 percent of the company's shares while institutional investors held 0.55 percent, foreign investors 0.09 percent, and the public 34.29 percent, according to Dhaka Stock Exchange.

Walton began its journey in 1977. In early 2008, it commenced manufacturing refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and compressors before expanding into televisions and home and electrical appliances, its website says.

Its manufacturing plant and headquarters, spanning about 5 million square feet across 19 buildings, is located in Chandra, Kaliakoir, Gazipur.​

Global electronics brand Walton has officially launched its business operation in Sri Lanka, marking another milestone towards becoming one of the top global electronics brands.

Recently, Walton Brand was launched at a splendid programme held at Cinnamon Life Hotel in Colombo, according to a media release.

The grand launching program was organised by โ€˜Monik Trading Private Limitedโ€™, a renowned Sri Lankan farm and Walton Brand's distributor.

S M Mahbubul Alam, Managing Director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries PLC, attended the function as the chief guest while Dr Wasala Maduwantha Ariyapala, Managing Director of Monik Trading, Md. Jannatul Habib, Deputy Head of Mission of the Bangladesh Embassy in Sri Lanka, Thisara Perera, former captain of the Sri Lankan National Cricket Team and Nishat Tasnim Shuchi, Chief Executive Officer of Walton Micro-Tech Corporation were also present as special guests.

Apart from them, around four hundred distributors and traders from Sri Lanka also participated in the program.

Mahbubul Alam also noted that design, technology, features and quality of Walton products are constantly being developed according to the customer needs, weather conditions and standards of developed countries.

In continuation of this, Walton has been able to produce South Asia's most energy-efficient residential AC and the world's first voice control AC.

In addition, Walton's refrigerators, ACs, TVs and other products have been equipped with its own innovative and cutting-edge smart technologies and features like energy-efficient intelligent inverter technology, IoT, AI or artificial intelligence.

Pointing at the success of Walton brand business expansion in the global market, he said, "Walton brand business is currently being operated in more than 50 countries in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe. The demand and use of Walton brand products in Asian countries is going up. I firmly believe that Walton brand will be able to secure a strong market position through winning the trust of Sri Lankan buyers."

Bangladesh has entered the global renewable energy supply chain, with Radiant Alliance, an affiliate of local conglomerate East Coast Group, dispatching its first export of solar PV modules to the United States.

The initial consignment, sent on 19 June 2025 to US-based CleanGrid Incorporation, marks the start of a four-year export agreement worth over Tk215 crore, according to a top official of Radiant. Under the deal, the company will supply a total of 64.60 megawatts (MW) of solar modules through 2028, with 12.40MW scheduled for delivery in 2025 alone.

The modules, in 100Wp and 200Wp configurations, are manufactured at Radiant's fully automated plant in Ashulia, Savar. With an annual production capacity of 600MW, the facility is among the most advanced in the country.

"This is not just a company milestone โ€“ it's a national milestone," Masudur Rahim, CEO of Radiant Alliance, told The Business Standard. "We are proving that 'Made in Bangladesh' can compete in the global cleantech market."

Industry insiders said the move positions Bangladesh as an emerging contender in solar manufacturing, a sector dominated by China, India and Vietnam. Another 300MW order for 2026 is reportedly under negotiation, further signalling international confidence in local production capabilities.

"This is the first time in Bangladesh a local company exporting solar PV modules," said Rahim, adding that Radiant Alliance has a manufacturing process of more than 10 years, which previously produced for the domestic solar home systems (SHS) market only.

"Now we are manufacturing products for international markets," he said. This is a fully new line invested for the targeted international market and came into operation just months before, he said.

Radiant's PV module sizes are 50Wp to 700Wp, which are being produced in its plant where Radiant invested around $20 million or around Tk220 crore.

"It showcases Bangladesh's ability to manufacture high-quality, export-grade renewable energy products," said Golam Baki Masud, general secretary of the Solar Module Manufacturers Association of Bangladesh (SMMAB). "This was a dream, we were waiting for this day," he told TBS.

Masud also said the USA's anti-dumping duty on Chinese solar panels is an opportunity for Bangladesh.

Munawar Misbah Moin, president of SMMAB and managing director of Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy, also termed Radiant's export move to the US market very encouraging for other manufacturers.

"Earlier, we had exported to Nepal, but that was a very small panel. Now we need to produce large panels, which need big investments," Moin told TBS.

Local solar panel manufacturers said they are struggling to compete with a flood of cheap, low-quality imports that continue to enter the domestic market unchecked, undermining both quality standards and the viability of local production.

"There is no proper quality control mechanism in place," said the SMMAB president.

Industry insiders argued that the absence of regulatory oversight has created an uneven playing field, where imported panels often undercut local products on price without meeting minimum technical or safety standards.

To protect the emerging domestic industry, the SMMAB has long been advocating for a mandatory quota system in public sector solar projects. Under this proposal, a fixed percentage of solar modules used in government-funded installations, such as utility-scale plants, rooftop systems in schools, hospitals, and other public institutions, would be required to come from local manufacturers.

"We're not asking for special treatment. We're asking for fair policy support that allows a new industry to take root," said the SMMAB president.
 
HiSense (Global home appliance brand based in China) has set up a backward-linkaged base-level JV to manufacture Large Panel TV's, Aircons and Fridges in Bangladesh with Fair Electronics Bangladesh. The factory is certified as a "green" factory and uses robotics extensively to precision-manufacture and assemble panels and electronics.

100" 4K resolution QLED TV's are being made and sold locally, which I have seen personally, which sell for roughly Taka 5 lakh. 85" 4K resolution QLED TV's go for around Taka 3 lakh.

Home appliances are a huge sector in Bangladesh now - and the products are all export quality equivalents, not just meant for domestic consumption.

The Daily Star (TDS): What are the current trends in the washing machine market in Bangladesh, and what challenges does the industry face?

MD Khairul Bashar (MKB):
The washing machine market in Bangladesh is experiencing steady growth, driven by urbanisation, rising disposable incomes, and a shift towards modern home appliances. However, the industry also faces several challenges, including high production costs, unreliable power supply, and low rural penetration. Consumers are increasingly opting for fully automatic washing machines over semi-automatic models due to their convenience and time-saving features. Front-load and top-load variants are gaining traction, especially in urban households where space and efficiency are priorities. With rising electricity costs, consumers are now considering energy-efficient washing machines.

This industry is still very new. Local brands like Walton have not been producing washing machines for a long time. Some other companies are planning to enter this sector, but due to certain challenges, they are reconsidering their investment. The government's decision to impose a 5% VAT on locally manufactured units in the 2025โ€“26 budget, without adjusting tariffs for Completely Built Unit (CBU) imports, has created an uneven competitive landscape. This not only hampers existing manufacturers but also discourages new investment. To encourage local production and make washing machines more affordable for middle-class families, government support and protective tariffs on CBU imports would be beneficial.

TDS: What are the key features and product offerings in your washing machines that attract customers?

MKB:
Air Wash, Oxy Fresh, IoT, DD (Direct Drive), Inverter, AI, Auto Dosing, and Anti-foaming โ€“ these are the key features of our washing machines. In addition, our products offer EMI facilities, extended warranty periods, and both indoor and outdoor service support.

TDS: What new technologies are currently being introduced in your washing machines?

MKB:
There has been significant development in washing machine technologies since the onset of the 'new normal', with greater emphasis on enhanced performance, efficiency, and convenience. First comes Inverter Technology, which enables energy efficiency, quiet operation, and longer machine life. The Fuzzy Control System automatically detects the load and sets the appropriate wash function accordingly. Saving power, water, and detergent is now a major concern for users. Air Wash technology significantly reduces water and detergent consumption. Oxy Fresh enhances fabric freshness. The washer-dryer combo helps dry clothes completely in the same machine. Lastly, the IoT feature enables users to control and monitor the machine's operation, diagnostics, and cycle updates via a smartphone app.

TDS: Are you planning any future initiatives focused on innovation, particularly towards eco-friendly or energy-efficient washing machines, in response to customer needs?

MKB:
