India is examining Bangladesh’s formal request for the extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina under established bilateral legal procedures, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
“Regarding the extradition issue, the position is clear that India is examining the matter under its established procedures, and updates will be shared when available,” Jaiswal said at the MEA’s weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday.
His remarks came after a high-level meeting in Dhaka between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat—their first formal talks since Trivedi took office.
Bangladesh pressed key legal demands at the meeting, including Hasina’s extradition and the return of suspects wanted in the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
Bangladeshi officials have stressed that deeper bilateral cooperation depends on creating a “conducive environment”, with unresolved judicial issues remaining a key sticking point.
Asked about the Hadi murder case, Jaiswal said: “It is a legal and judicial matter, and investigations are currently ongoing.”
He also confirmed that India has renewed its standing invitations to Tarique to make an official bilateral visit and attend the BRICS outreach summit in New Delhi on Sept 12–13 as BIMSTEC chairman.
Dhaka has yet to formally accept either invitation, maintaining a measured diplomatic posture following Tarique’s recent visits to Malaysia and China.
Meanwhile, security engagement has continued alongside diplomatic outreach.
Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Parag Jain led a four-member Indian delegation to Dhaka on Monday for high-level talks on regional security.
Jain met Tarique’s Defence Affairs Advisor, retired brigadier general AKM Shamsul Islam and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, with the sides exchanging views on regional security developments.
