Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been acquitted of leaking state secrets but will remain in jail because of a conviction in another case.

In the run-up to elections in February, the 71-year-old - who was ousted as prime minister in 2022 - was hit with three prison sentences for cases he insists were politically motivated.

Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison in January on charges of making public a diplomatic cable in 2022.

The Islamabad High Court upheld his appeal and cleared him in that case on Monday, but he is not expected to leave prison for now.

The former cricket star and his third wife Bushra are both serving prison sentences after a court ruled that their 2018 marriage had been un-Islamic and illegal as it came too soon after her divorce.

The couple were also found guilty of corruption over gifts received during his term as prime minister.

Even behind bars, the former cricket star remains a powerful force in Pakistani politics.

During the February elections, his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which had been forced to run candidates as independents, emerged as the single largest bloc.

However, they fell short of the majority and their rivals united to form a new government.

In the so-called "cipher case", the prosecution argued that Khan had leaked a classified cable sent to Pakistan's ambassador in Washington.

At a rally in March 2022, the then prime minister appeared on stage waving a piece of paper that he said showed a foreign conspiracy against him.

He didn't name the country - but was subsequently highly critical of the US. Washington and Pakistani officials denied the claim.

Prosecutors said Khan's actions amounted to leaking a classified document and damaging diplomatic relations.

Khan's foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Both men were acquitted of the charges on Monday.

"Thank God, the sentence is overturned," PTI spokesman Naeem Panjutha, said in a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

US State Department said, "The case and its merits were none of the United States' business."
The charge of an illegitimate marriage is all that's left after a court acquitted Khan over his handling of a classified cypher.
After an arduous legal fight, a Pakistani court on Monday acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan on charges related to his handling of a confidential intelligence cable, known within the Pakistani government as a cypher.
Khan's acquittal by the Islamabad High Court is a major victory for the former prime minister and his supporters, coming on the heels of a suspended sentence in a separate corruption case.
The ruling leaves Khan behind bars on precisely one charge: namely, that he and his third wife Bushra Bibi entered into an "un-Islamic marriage," a crime for which Khan and Bibi are serving seven-year sentences.
The court, both during the hearing and in its ruling, dove into the details of Bibi's menstrual cycle, ultimately rejecting her claim that three cycles had passed between her divorce and her marriage to Khan. Instead, the court relied on the word of her ex-husband.
Asked by The Intercept at a briefing, State Department spokesperson Matt Miller said the case and its merits were none of the United States' business.

The state of affairs in Pakistan, a secularish state using fake Islamic laws that hold no real values in order to control the population. For everyone to see right in the open.

On the other hand, many of the ruling elites have secret or not-so-secret concubines in this same fake Islamic state !! These elites rule Pakistan while Imran Khan is in prison because his wife didn't have enough menstrual cycles! What is a travesty of justice in a savage society !!

The ex-husband of Bushra Bibi also only decided to make this public a few years later, when it affected Imran Khan the most, I wonder why?

Also surprising is that, according to Islam, it is the WOMAN who has the say of when her menstrual periods emerge for this 'law' to be valid. But the court only wants to hear what the husband says. I wonder who could be behind this? Oh, of course we know.

Religion is the most destructive virus among all others. I hope the people of Pakistan wake up and say no to this virus, as it can be used against anyone at any time.

The ones in charge use religion as a tool. It's not Islam that's the issue here but the people in power, the corrupt Pakistani elite who still have a weak backbone.

Yes. When a tool becomes a subject of regular abuse, we need to reconsider it. We need to have a check and balance so that no one can abuse that tool. The way to do this is to separate religion from the state. Religion should only stay in the personal domain.

He will be back in power once the Ukraine episodes ends.

Every state has a religion. This talk of "seperation" is not true.

The only thing that matters is the rule of law. That is it. Successful states apply the law mostly equally. Failed ones like Pakistan do not.

For example, rhe Taliban will make Afghanistan a very powerful country if they continue to apply their law in their country. Application of law leads to good management of resources. Given the amount of natural resources Afghanistan has, if they stay true to the law and order, regardless if one agrees with their ideology or not, they will be lending cash to crookedly and corrupt mafiaso run states like Pakistan.

Religion or not, Afghans, in general, are more philosophically developed than Pakistan, and Afghanistan will become much more developed than Pakistan in the future. Many people mistake Kandahar or the Pashtuns for representing the whole of Afghanistan, which is wrong. I had been to Kabul before the soviet invasion, and it was a nice city to be in.
