Indian citizen held in Faridpur for ‘vandalising temple’
Staff Correspondent 16 September, 2024, 23:03
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to suspicious behaviour, the police detained the unknown person to ascertain his identity, and, at one point of the interrogation, he confessed that he was an Indian citizen, it said.

There you go.

This is how the BJP plays the "Hindu Victim Card".

I am amazed how they deliberately scheme to malign a neighbor nation and meddle in the their political and economic affairs.

Sending Hindu Indians over to Bangladesh to damage Hindu deities in temples and then blaming us for it.

Army must prevent any misuse of magistracy powers
Govt grants special powers to army officers to improve law and order

VISUAL: STAR

The interim government's decision to grant magistracy powers to commissioned army officers for 60 days is an extraordinary measure quite in keeping with these extraordinary times in the nation's life. As per the decision, effective immediately, army officers will act as executive magistrates across the country and be able to exercise the powers that come with this position. With police still largely absent on the streets and lingering concerns about various subversive and criminal activities, the army's involvement in day-to-day law enforcement may seem like a necessary step to restore order. However, it also brings with it critical responsibilities and potential risks that must be managed carefully.

The immediate backdrop to the decision is no secret. The wave of unrest that engulfed the whole country, including the police, following the mass uprising has mostly subsided by now, but concerns remain. We have earlier talked about how low morale within the police force and their diminished capacity are affecting police operations. The decision to grant magistracy powers to army officers aims to fill that gap. These powers, conferred under Section 12(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, will allow army officers to take steps in light of 16 sections of the CrPC, including arresting or ordering arrests of suspected offenders, conducting searches, dispersing unlawful assemblies, and so on. They can also use lethal force in extreme situations.

It is the wide scope of the powers and their potential misuse that have raised some concerns, however. True, granting the army this level of authority is not without precedent. Earlier, magistracy powers were granted during the Operation Clean Heart in 2002 and indirectly during the 2007-08 emergency rule. However, it is crucial to remember that such powers come with a heavy responsibility. We, therefore, urge utmost caution and vigilance in their execution. Going forward, the image and integrity of the armed forces, as well as citizens' trust in them, will largely hinge on the proper and judicious use of their new-found authority. Any misuse could erode public confidence and lead to unnecessary confrontations with civilians.

It is equally important to remember that this is, and must remain, a temporary measure. The deployment of the army with special powers must not be seen as a replacement for the police or civilian authorities, but as a stopgap measure to address an extraordinary situation. The longer the army is tasked with fulfilling these duties, the greater the risk of blurring the lines between military and civilian functions. So, it is vital that the police force be fully operationalised as quickly as possible so that we can return to normalcy.

Ouster of Sheikh Hasina was the direct outcome of fierce protest by people of all walks of life against the killing of almost 1000 students in broad daylight. Sheikh Hasina's misrule for 16 years was the root cause of her downfall.

When you have a big population of radical elements and moles of foreign power, the best thing which a politician in power can do is handle them with heavy hands in the best interest of nation. If this government remains in power for a longer period of time, you will realize that and perhaps appreciate what I say.

It was a student uprising. People who protested against Sheikh Hasina's misrule were school/college/university students. I fail to understand the reason for you to dub students radical elements and moles. And also please do something about the Hindu radical elements (BJP/RSS) in India who are running the country and creating problems for Muslims.

What is the truth?

Well street thugs will take advantage of the police being somewhat absent.

That is why they gave army magistracy powers yesterday so they can enforce law and order.

Now Army will be everywhere.

No one should beat up anybody for any reason.

The goondas will be caught and put to book.

The interim government will soon ask India to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Law, Justice and Parliament Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said today (19 September).

"We will soon request India to extradite Sheikh Hasina so that she can face trial at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for her alleged involvement in genocide during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement," the adviser said at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium.

"We have an extradition treaty with India. As per the extradition treaty, if any convicted person stays in India, we can seek his or her extradition. We will soon let you know through the law ministry," he added.

The adviser stressed that they will definitely seek extradition of convicted persons once trial begins no matter who the person is.

Sheikh Hasina, who left the country on 5 August, is facing a number of cases.

The adviser said they have taken some steps and there are some visible progress including formation of investigation and prosecution teams.

SHUJAN-Citizens for Good Governance Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar and Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Mahfuj Alam also spoke at the briefing.

"Our key focus is to work. It's a public service. We don't want repetition of what happened in the past," said Badiul Alam, head of the Election Commission Reforms Commission.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir were present.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said that the Indian government has given shelter to Sheikh Hasina and she has been staying there.

"We will have to see this matter this way," he said, adding that everything "does not go by the law."

The adviser made this remark on September 7 while responding to a question on Hasina's status in India as her diplomatic passport has been cancelled.

He said Bangladesh has not learnt anything officially from the Indian side except what the country's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said after her entry in India.

It has been over a month since Sheikh Hasina hurriedly landed at a military base near Delhi after a chaotic exit from Bangladesh.

Hasina's dramatic departure on August 5 followed weeks of student-led protests which spiraled into deadly, nationwide unrest.

She was initially expected to stay in India for just a short period, but reports say her attempts to seek asylum in the UK, the US and the UAE have not been successful so far, according to the BBC.

Hasina heading BD is very important for BD's Progress and sovereignty. US is hell-bent to curve out a Christian country out of BD and Myanmar. If BD is ruled by present government, BD will neo-colonialized followed by creation of Christian state.
