India is attempting to further escalate the situation surrounding the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das and related matters, Adviser Nahid Islam said on Wednesday.

In a verified Facebook post, Nahid mentioned that the interim government is actively working to uphold the civil rights of minority communities in Bangladesh.

"We respect their legitimate demands and remain committed to resolving the issues through dialogue," he wrote.

"We urge all to recognise the negative impact India's interference in our internal security is having on the broader situation. Such statements amount to an intrusion by India," Nahid added.

He went on to say, "India is attempting to provoke the situation further. Instead, it should focus on ensuring the security and rights of its own minority communities. We call on India to act responsibly and to refrain from endorsing the false propaganda of the Awami League."

Earlier, on Tuesday, lawyer Saiful Islam was killed amid clashes among police, lawyers, and supporters of former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das after a Chattogram court denied him bail in a sedition case.

Witnesses said unidentified people dragged Saiful to Jangal Cinema Lane on the ground floor of the court building, where he was beaten and hacked to death.

The unrest erupted when thousands of Chinmoy's followers gathered at the court premises, blocking the prison van carrying him and demanding his immediate release.

Mamunul Haque, Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam, today said that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is trying to "destabilize the country."

He also demanded an immediate ban on ISKCON as a "terrorist organization".

Speaking at a public rally organized by Khelafat Majlis at Faridpur Government Rajendra College, he said, "ISKCON must be banned immediately, otherwise, Hefazat-e-Islam will be forced to take to the streets."

He further emphasized that his organization would provide security to Hindus if the state fails to do so.

He reassured the Hindu community, saying, "There is no reason to fear. If necessary, we will provide protection. However, do not engage in any conspiracy against the country."

He also criticized the previous government, saying that it manipulated state institutions, including the judiciary and administration, for its own benefit. "The previous oppressive government did whatever it wanted by placing its people in key positions. They looted the country's banks, leaving the people unable to access their own money," he said.

The Hefazat-e-Islam leader urged the current government to swiftly hold national elections, warning that it should not remain in power for much longer.

HC seeks govt action on ISKCON clash, murder

The High Court on Wednesday directed the government to report on the actions taken regarding the killing of assistant public prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif, who was hacked to death during a violent clash on the Chattogram court premises on Tuesday.

The confrontation broke out as followers of former International Society for Krishna Consciousness leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, now spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, clashed with law enforcers.

The violence erupted after a Chattogram metropolitan magistrate rejected Chinmoy’s bail plea and ordered to send him to jail.

The bench Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury issued the directive verbally to attorney general Md Asaduzzaman, responding to lawyer Md Monir Uddin’s plea for judicial intervention.

Monir urged the court to ensure the arrest, fair investigation and prosecution of those responsible for his colleague’s death.

Monir Uddin also called for drastic measures, including a 15-day state of emergency in Dinajpur, Rangpur, and Chattogram, and a ban on ISKCON, which he alleged was involved in the killing.

He based his claims on media reports and said that the incident escalated following a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Speaking to reporters, Monir said, ‘ISKCON activists killed my colleague, as reported in newspapers. If ISKCON is not banned, their actions will spiral out of control.’

He further claimed that tension between Muslims and Hindus could lead to broader communal violence.

Monir also accused ISKCON protesters of obstructing Chinmoy’s transfer to jail and suggested that India’s statement had provoked the violence.

‘In my personal opinion, my brother was killed due to this provocation,’ he added.

Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman briefed journalists later, clarifying that banning ISKCON is a government policy decision and beyond the High Court’s jurisdiction.

‘The lawyer’s plea is premature. The court should wait for the government’s actions on this matter,’ he said.

He also noted that the government would investigate whether ISKCON is a licensed organisation and assured the court that steps would be taken following the inquiry.

The High Court is expected to hear the government’s response today.

A legal notice, meanwhile, was served on the government authorities seeking ban on the ISKCON following Section 18 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, calling it as an extremist organisation.

Lawyer Al Mamun Rasel, on behalf of his 10 clients—who are all Supreme Court lawyers, served the notice to the secretaries of ministries of the law and the home and the inspector general of police through registered posts.

These goons are now pressurizing court by building a mob around in court premises. A clear lawless situation is emerging in BD. Situation in BD seems grim. Let us see what happens ahead. India should be on high alert not only on border but to protect Hindus of BD as and when it is required.

When did Bangladeshi Hindu citizens become property of India (or its concern).

This Hindutva narrative is blatant hegemony and attack on Bangladesh sovereignty.

We have an independent country - the more this hateful anti-Bangladesh narrative is propagated in India- the worse bilateral trade will suffer and boycotts will get.

No discussion held to ban ISKCON: Rizwana

Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan yesterday said no discussion was held to ban International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Bangladesh.

"No discussion was held in the government to ban ISKCON [in Bangladesh]. Many may raise demands. People may take programmes to press home their demands. We are not mixing the offences of organisations with the offences of individuals," she told a press briefing, responding to a question.

The press briefing was held at Foreign Service Academy in the capital last evening.

About the arrest of Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, Rizwana said he was arrested on specific allegations and he is under trial now, she added.

Citing newspapers' reports, Rizwana said ISKCON has claimed that it has no relation with Chinmoy Krishna Das.

Speaking at the press briefing, adviser Mahfuj Alam said two cases have been filed in connection with the killing of a lawyer in Chattogram so far and more cases might follow.

Drives are going on to arrest those involved in the killing, he said.

Mahfuj said country's people together resisted the ill efforts of creating communal violence in the country.

In this context, he said, a delegation of BNP met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus yesterday and a delegation of Jamaat-e-Islami called on him today.

He said both the parties stressed for national unity to maintain the country's sovereignty and resist the attempts of communal violence.

About the attacks on mazars, the adviser said the government is monitoring the situation and measures taken in this regard will be visible within a day or two.

He hoped that the ongoing situation will come back to normalcy with the help of all stakeholders concerned.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also present at the press briefing.

A grievous tragedy at Chattogram court
Govt must thoroughly investigate the clashes, hold to account those responsible

1732840272965.png

VISUAL: STAR

We are disturbed by the clashes that erupted on the Chattogram court premises on Tuesday, culminating in the brutal murder of Assistant Public Prosecutor Saiful Islam. Given the timing of these incidents—amid heightened tensions over recent attacks on media houses and violent disruptions by college students—it is not unreasonable to think that a sinister force is pulling the strings to destabilise the country through orchestrated chaos, making it all the more important that we remain careful and act responsibly at all times.

On Tuesday, violence broke out outside the Chattogram Court Building when Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a controversial former ISKCON leader facing sedition charges for allegedly disrespecting the national flag, was denied bail. Reportedly, his followers confronted security officers and lawyers as he was about to be sent to jail, halting the prison van. Despite efforts to clear them, the protests persisted, and by late afternoon, law enforcement used stun grenades and batons to disperse the crowd. The situation quickly escalated into violent confrontations, leading to at least 37 individuals being injured, including 10 police officers. During the chaos, Saiful was fatally struck by lethal weapons. Several cars, motorcycles, and a lawyer's chamber were also vandalised.

It goes without saying that these developments have profound communal implications if left unaddressed. For a country that prides itself on a hard-won interfaith harmony, despite occasional provocations, these incidents represent a troubling rise in tensions that cannot be attributed solely to the fallen regime. Other vested interest groups maybe at play, as evidenced by reports about sections of the Indian media circulating false and inflammatory narratives—such as the erroneous claim that the slain advocate was Chinmoy's lawyer. Such misinformation, coupled with exaggerated claims about police handling of Hindu supporters, is clearly designed to deepen divisions. While it is reassuring that the public has largely resisted falling into communal traps so far, the need to be circumspect has never been more urgent.

The authorities' response to the crisis has been measured so far. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus condemned Saiful's murder and promised a thorough investigation, urging calm and nonviolence. Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan earlier clarified that Chinmoy's arrest was based on allegations of sedition, not his religious identity. Such messaging is essential in countering misinformation. Six suspects linked to the killing of Saiful have been arrested based on video footage, while 21 others were detained for vandalism and assaulting police officers during the unrest. Notably, Reuters reported that among those arrested were six members of Awami League, who police said were found in possession of improvised explosives.

As investigations continue, it is crucial to separate fact from fiction. Baseless allegations and communal scapegoating will only serve to exacerbate tensions. The interim government, along with political and religious leaders, must demonstrate their commitment to peace, reconciliation, and rule of law, ensuring that those responsible for Tuesday's violence, including provocateurs, are held accountable. Only through collective resolve and vigilance can we prevent divisive forces from derailing post-uprising Bangladesh.

Ban ISKCON, give it no quarter
Student coordinators urge government

1732841457197.png

Demanding an immediate ban on the ISKCON, leaders of the Anti-discrimination Students' Movement yesterday warned they would not allow the religious platform to implement "Delhi's agenda in Bangladesh".

They also said a conspiracy is being hatched to destabilise the country, but the "minority theory" will not be allowed to divide the country.

The student leaders made the remarls at two separate events in Chattogram and Dhaka.

"ISKCON is acting as an agent of Awami League and attempting to destabilise the country. This extremist group is behind the brutal killing of Saiful Islam," Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-discrimination Students' Movement, said at a rally held at the Tiger Pass intersection in Chattogram.

He said Bangladesh is a land of coexistence, and extremists of any kind have no place here.

"We'll work to protect everyone's rights. However, no room will be given if anyone tries to operate an extremist organisation under the guise of religion. My brother Saiful was brutally murdered. ISKCON must be banned as a terrorist organisation."

The rally also sought justice for the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, urging the authorities to apprehend the killers within 24 hours.

Speaking at the event, Sarjis Alam, a member of Jatiya Nagorik Committee and general secretary of July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, said, "General Sanatanis in the country are peace-loving, but the agents of the dictator Hasina are trying to create an unstable situation by inciting ISKCON. However, we won't let that happen as long as we are alive."

Earlier in the day, the student leaders attended the second namaz-e-janaza for Saiful Islam at Jamiatul Falah Mosque in the port city's Wasa intersection.

In the capital, speaking at a rally in the Central Shahid Minar, Abdul Hannan Masud, chief organiser of the students' platform, alleged ISKCON is working to implement Delhi's agenda in Bangladesh at the instructions of the Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

"But their plan to pit Hindus and Muslims against each other in this country will never succeed."

He said no conspiracy will be silently tolerated anymore.

"Collaborators of the Awami League are still lurking in many places, trying to destablise the country in various ways. We have decided that wherever they are found, they will be beaten by the public and handed over to the police."

Umama Fatema, spokesperson for the platform, said that after August 5, Sheikh Hasina's last trump card was an attack on minorities.

"She wanted to portray that an Islamic revolution was taking place in Bangladesh, that Muslims were endangering Hindus, and that Hindus were unsafe in the country. The entire plot was orchestrated by India."

She alleged that since August 5 the Indian media has been aggressively pushing the minority issue in Bangladesh.

Criticising the interim government for its failure to address the propaganda allegedly spread by India, Umama said, "I believe it was the responsibility of the government to inform the world that India is running a propaganda against Bangladesh through its media…. However, we observed that the government was lenient towards India."

She also said that Bangladesh's peaceful domestic politics is perceived as a threat to India's pro-Hindu agenda.

"We must remain vigilant in our politics to ensure that neither India nor the Awami League can politicise the minority issue."

Central Coordinator Mahin Sarkar reiterated, "ISKCON is a militant organisation. We demand it be banned…. However, we must not fall into any traps laid by the Awami League. Everyone must remain calm and patient."

Analysing video footage, the police have detained eight individuals among 14 people identified so far over the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif on a Chattogram court premises on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, 27 other individuals were sent to jail over obstructing the on-duty police and vandalising public properties on the court premises during the clashes with the members of law enforcement agencies over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, leader of an organisation of the Hindus.

Confirming the matter, Chattogram Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for crime Roish Uddin on Thursday said that they had detained and arrested 35 people so far in connection with the attacks on law enforcers and subsequent clashes amid protests in different areas.

‘The family is yet to file the murder case but filing of a case was underway,’ he added.

The identities of the 14 identified in the killing are Rajib Bhattacharya, Rumit Das, Sumit Das, Gagan Das, Nayan Das, Vishal Das, Aman Das, Manu Methor, Bikash Das, Arjun Das, Bikash Das, Shuvo Kanti Das, Krishna Das, and Bunja Methor, according to CMP additional deputy commissioner for media Kazi Md Tarek Aziz.

Following the incident, BGC Trust University authorities have temporarily expelled its fourth-semester law student Shuvo Kanti Das.

‘On Tuesday night, 30 individuals were detained during a raid in connection with the attack on the police. After verification, three were released, while the rest were sent to jail through the court,’ said DC crime Roish, adding that eight new suspects were detained after conducting raids from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.

The Chattogram District Bar Association, meanwhile, observed a strike for the second consecutive day on Thursday, demanding justice for the slain lawyer.

About 1:00pm Thursday, a lawyers’ procession marched through the court premises, demanding a ban on International Society for Krishna Consciousness, widely known as ISKCON, for its alleged involvement in Alif’s killing.

The lawyers also chanted slogans accusing the organisation of extremism.

At a press conference on Thursday in Dhaka city, the ISKCON claimed that the organisation was not involved in the protests staged for the release of its former leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and said that it was not liable for his offences.

The spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, a platform of the Hindu community, Chinmoy, also a former ISKCON leader, was arrested from the capital’s Hazarat Shahjalal International Airport area on Monday afternoon and was sent to Chattogram jail on Tuesday in a sedition case filed by a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader in Chattogram, Firoz Khan, with the Kotowali police on October 30.

‘The video and photos that went viral on social media show that a group of youths hacked the lawyer with locally-made sharp weapons,’ CMP ADC Tarek said, adding that the arrests were made based on these materials.

Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, a platform of some 15 cultural organisations of Jahangirnagar University, on Thursday demanded justice for Alif’s killing, the New Age university correspondent reported.

The leaders and activists of the alliance staged a human chain on the road adjacent to the university’s Central Shaheed Minar to press home their demand.

The speakers at the human chain also protested communal violence following the provocation of vested quarters across Bangladesh.

In Shariatpur district town on Thursday, different Islamist parties brought out a procession protesting at the killing, New Age correspondent in Shariatpur reported.

ISKCON says Chinmoy no longer with them, not involved in protest
Staff Correspondent 28 November, 2024, 18:33

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known as ISKCON, on Thursday claimed that the organisation was not involved in the protest staged for the release of its former leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and said that it was not liable for his offences.

At a press conference on Thursday at Swamibag Temple in the Old Town of the capital, the ISKCON Bangladesh general secretary Charu Chandra Das Brahmachari said that they had expelled Chinmoy Krishna Das and two others the organisation several months ago as their activities went against the organisation’s constitution.

‘We demanded that the government, people and journalists find out the fact behind spreading falsehood over ISKCON,’ said Charu Chandra Das, hours after the High Court dismissed a petition demanding a ban on ISKCON in Bangladesh.

Amid the countrywide protest by students, people and political parties demanding a ban on ISKCON for the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram, he also claimed that the organisation was not linked to the murder.

He also urged the government for ensure trial into the lawyer killing.

Responding to a question, ISKCON Bangladesh executive committee and children protection group member Gauranga Das said that several children alleged against Chinmoy over misconduct and unethical behaviour and a letter was served to Chinmoy for the matter.

He said that Chinmoy was asked to refrain from organizational work for three months. But he neither followed the call nor paid any heed to organisation’s directives.

‘This is why he was expelled permanently from ISKCON Bangladesh in July,’ he added.

ISKCON Bangladesh is promoting unity and harmony, the ISKCON leader Charu said, adding that it had never been involved in communal or conflict-driven activities.

He said that they were scheduled to hold a meeting with the land adviser Hasan Arif on Sunday.

On Tuesday, assistant public prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif was killed and 25 others injured during a clash between members of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, a platform of the Hindu community, and law enforcement agencies on a Chattogram court premises over sending Chinmoy to jail in a sedition case.

TLDR: To save the organization, ISKCON Bangladesh leaders are now distancing themselves from militant ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and have fired him from ISKCON leadership position. However - WB BJP leader Shuvendu, ISKCON India leadership and exiled former Bangladesh PM Hasina have all urged Delhi BJP leaders to speak with Bangladesh advisers, so the evidence is clear who is trying to destabilize Bangladesh using minority Hindu card - ISKCON leadership for sure cannot escape culpability. It increasingly looks like ISKCON activity will be banned in Bangladesh for certain.

Jamaatis in Bangladesh are nowhere near as militant as the Taliban.

They want to be part of the normal political process - that is about the extent of it.

General populace do not have out-and-out support for them.

Demands from every quarter are rolling in into Bangladesh govt. to ban ISKCON, and not just from Islamic political orgs. The govt. must now decide what path to take in order to avoid riots and unrest.

3 more detained amid countywide protests

The police on Friday detained three more suspects amid protests in Dhaka and elsewhere over the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram city and clashes with the law enforcers over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a leader of an organisation of the Hindus.

Also on the day, a number of organisations, including Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, held countrywide protests, demanding arrest of the lawyer’s killers and banning the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, widely known as ISKCON.

The police have tightened security of temples in Chattogram amid attacks on three Hindu temples in the port city and remained on alert at courts across the country to avoid any untoward incident. They have also said that they are on high alert in the capital.

Amid the situation the minority issue is increasingly becoming a sore point between Bangladesh and India.

Quoting Kotwali police officer-in-charge Md Abdul Karim, New Age staff correspondent in Chattogram reported that the police detained three people in the Bakalia area of Chattogram city on Thursday night.

The detainees are Babla Dhar, 42, son of the late Sunil Dhar from Kalamia Bazar in the city; Sajal Shil, 40, son of Dulal Shil of Ashiya Hindupara in the city; and Durlav Das.

The police said that Durlav Das was identified from video footage as being in possession of a sharp weapon during the murder.

Police officer Abdul Karim said, ‘Among the three detainees, one was directly involved in the lawyer’s murder and was armed with a sharp weapon.’

‘All three have been sent to jail this morning after being produced before the court in a case related to the attack on law enforcement personnel,’ he said.

He further added that no murder case had yet been filed by the family of lawyer Saiful Islam killed on November 26.

The situation was tense after miscreants had vandalised three Hindu temples at Patharghata in the port city on Friday. Two of the temples, Sri Sri Radha Govinda temple and Sri Sri Shantaneshwari Matri Mandir are on Ashraf Ali Road near Jelepara, and Sri Sri Jagatbandhu Ashram is adjacent to Satish Babu Lane.

Additional deputy commissioner for public relations of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Kazi Md Tarek Aziz said that additional police forces were deployed at the three temples after the attacks had sparked tension. Police patrols were also intensified, he added.

In the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Muhammad Talebur Rahman told New Age that they were on alert to prevent any untoward situation.

Earlier on Thursday, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep concern over the recent security breaches at courts across the country, describing the incidents as ‘rare,’ ‘unprecedented’ and ‘alarming.’

He emphasised urgent measures to ensure the safety and security of judicial premises, judges and court officials.

Various organisations, including Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, meanwhile on the day, held protests across the country after Jumma prayers and demanded a ban on ISKCON.

Hefazat leaders and activists held a protest rally in Dhaka, demanding a ban on ISKCON, and another in Chattogram, protesting at lawyer Saiful’s killing.

Its Dhaka city unit arranged the protest rally and a procession at the north gate of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram in which several thousand people joined.

‘A well-planned attempt is being made to destabilise Bangladesh and instigate a communal riot in the country,’ said Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque at the rally, condemning the murder of the lawyer.

Hefazat leaders also said that the country’s defeated forces were using a section of Hindus to create chaos and anarchy and as part of that ISKCON was carrying out a malicious campaign.

They urged people to stay vigilant against what they described as ‘communal provocations orchestrated by the fallen fascist regime and their masters.’

Hefazat-e-Islam in Chattogram also announced a long march of protest towards the Indian Embassy in the port city, scheduled for next Monday. Its joint secretary general Mufti Harun Izhar announced the programme.

After Friday prayers, Hefazat supporters marched from Jamiatul Falah Mosque, passing through WASA intersection and GEC areas before concluding at 2 No Gate.

Mufti Harun Izhar told the rally, ‘We will stage a peaceful long march towards the Indian High Commissioner’s office at 11:00am on Monday. No one will create unrest or throw stones during the programme.’

He added, ‘Our representatives will submit a memorandum on behalf of the “towhidi janata” to the embassy.’

On November 25, former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area. The next day, a Chattogram court denied him bail and sent him to jail.

Clashes broke out when his followers blocked the prison van taking Chinmoy to jail, leading to the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif on the court premises.

Protests have since erupted in various districts, demanding justice for the murder and proscription of the ISKCON.

BNP will not accept anarchy in names of ISKCON, religion: Fakhrul

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir | File photo

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said that his party will not accept any anarchy in the name of ISKCON or religion in the country.

Referring to the incident of killing lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram, he said, ‘I am scared when we see a lawyer get killed in the name of ISKCON and religion when we are dreaming about a new Bangladesh.’

His statement came while he was addressing a student convention programme arranged by Thakurgaon Chhatra Parishad in Dhaka, at the auditorium of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital.

He also said, ‘I would be happy if the anti-discrimination students came out on the streets, protesting such incidents.’

Fakhrul said that the fascists from across the border were trying to prove Bangladesh a fundamentalist country in the eyes of the world by hatching new conspiracies. And the media of neighbouring countries is assisting in these plots.

He called on the student community to remain vigilant against any plots to snatch the victory achieved by Bangladesh.

He said, ‘We all have to be vigilant so that the country does not fall into darkness again.’

Saying that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina had to flee the country, the BNP secretary general said that her example should be publicised more and more to spread the message that those who practised the politics of killing would have to face the fate as she did.

Referring to the recent incidents of clashes in some colleges in Dhaka, Fakhrul said that these incidents were the result of a conspiracy and were in no way acceptable.

‘We achieved a great victory through a bloody movement, and we do not want to lose the victory,’ he said.

At other event on the day, the party’s standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan urged all political parties to unite and fight against fascism.

Nazrul gave the call while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Khalafat Andolan marking its 43rd founding anniversary at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

‘Those who are fighting against fascism in Bangladesh must unite. It is not possible to defeat fascism without a united fight,’ Nazrul said.

‘We have a responsibility to restore democracy in the country. The blood sacrifice of those who gave their lives for democracy cannot be dishonoured,’ he said.

The BNP leader also said, ‘The responsibility of an interim government is to arrange fair elections in which the opinions of the people will be accurately reflected.’

Nazrul further said that starting from the 1952 language movement to the 1990 anti-dictatorship movement, people had shed blood, but time and time again they endured one-party rule, military dictatorship, and the murder of democracy.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, widely known as ISKCON, is a Hindu religious organisation with centres across the world, including Bangladesh. Its name has come to the forefront after one of its former member Chinmoy Krishna Das has recently been arrested in a sedition case.

Ousted Bangladesh PM hiding in India says Chinmoy arrested unjustly

Bangladesh’s deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said that Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was ‘unjustly arrested’ and must be released immediately, Hindustan Times reported on Thursday.

She also asked the Bangladesh government to protect religious and national minorities that braved violence since her ouster from power on August 5.

‘A top leader of the Sanatan Dharma community has been unjustly arrested, he must be released immediately. Temples have been burnt in Chittagong. In the past, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and houses of the Ahmadiyya community had been attacked, vandalised, looted and set on fire. Religious freedom and security of life and property of people of all communities must be ensured,’ the Awami League posted Hasina’s statement on X as mentioned in the report available online.

‘After the killing of countless Awami League leaders, activists, students, the public and members of the law enforcement agencies, harassment through attacks, cases and arrests is going on. I strongly condemn and protest at these anarchist actions,’ she added.

After Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been heading the interim government in Bangladesh since August 8.

Hasina also protested against killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif on the Chattogram court premises, according to the report.

‘A lawyer was killed in Chittagong. I strongly protest at this murder. Those involved in this murder must be found and punished quickly. Human rights have been grossly violated through this incident. A lawyer went to perform his professional duties, and those who beat him to death in this way are miscreants. Whoever they are, they must be punished,’ she said, the report added.

‘If the Yunus government, which seized power unconstitutionally, fails to punish these miscreants, it will also have to face punishment for violating human rights. I appeal to the countrymen to stand united against this kind of terrorism and militancy. It is important to ensure the safety of the lives and property of the common people,’ she added, the report mentions.

The lawyer was killed and 25 others were injured during a clash between followers of spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote and former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and law enforcement agencies on the Chattogram court premises on November 26 over sending Chinmoy to jail in a sedition case.

A man, dressed in a white shirt and black pants, was lying motionless on the street, while some 25-30 young men were surrounding him. One, wearing an orange T-shirt, black pants, and a grey helmet, began hacking the man on the ground with a sharp weapon, and another three to four cohorts joined the attack.

The was the scene of the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam in Chattogram on Tuesday. The police collected the 52-second footage as part of its investigation into the incident. The man who hacked the lawyer with a sharp weapon has been identified as Chandan Das.

According to the police, 25 to 30 people participated in the attack, while four were directly involved in hacking Saiful. Eight suspects have already been arrested, and a manhunt is underway to nab the other attackers. Also, seven more people have been arrested for their suspected involvement in attacks on the police.

The violence erupted after the Chattogram court rejected the bail plea of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, around 12:30 pm on the day. When he boarded the prison van, his supporters blocked the way and staged a protest there. The police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members used batons and sound grenades to disperse them, which led to clashes.

A group of lawyers brought out a rally in protest against the vandalism of vehicles and attacks. Multiple witnesses said while returning from the procession, Saiful Islam stumbled and fell. The armed individuals then hacked him to death.

52-second video

The police have collected a 52-second video of the brutal attack. According to officers associated with the investigation, Chandan Das, Om Das and Ranab hacked Saiful with sharp weapons, while the others continued beating him even after he turned motionless. Some 25-30 people were present there during the incident.

Among them, Ramit Das, Sumit Das, Gagan Das, Nayan Das, Vishal Das, Aman Das, Manu Methar, and Rajib Bhattacharya were arrested in the immediate night. They mostly work as cleaners, while one is a private university law student.

Residents of the Sebak Colony, which is home to the attackers, have mostly been at large since the incident. A number of people were seen there while visiting the area in the afternoon on Thursday. They, on the condition of anonymity, told Prothom Alo that they all are now suffering, though only a few were involved with the incident. They demanded that the authorities harass no innocent individual.

The officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, Fazlul Quader Chowdhury, said through the video footage and interrogation of the arrestees, they came to know about the involvement of 25-30 individuals in the murder. They have mostly been identified. The police have already arrested eight and are conducting drives to detain the others.

Regarding the attackers' potential political affiliations, the OC said they are yet to be confirmed, but are still looking into the issue.

Meanwhile, seven others were arrested in three cases involving attacks on the police. They are – Rajib, Boby Chowdhury, Abdul Kaium, Kowshik Chowdhury, Abir Dey, Robin Das, and Jewel Das. With this, the number of arrestees for attacks on the police reached 35.

According to the police, the family of Saiful Islam is preparing to file a murder case, but no case had been lodged until last night.

Question over the police’s role

The district bar association's president, Nazim Uddin Chowdhury, raised questions over the role of the police during the incident. At a demonstration programme at the court premises on Thursday, he alleged that the incidents were actually instigated by the police.

He questioned why the police were inactive when Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was taken into the prison van, why he was kept on the road for three hours, and why he was given a handmike to deliver a speech.

The lawyer drew the attention of the police commissioner to look into the incidents. Also, he threatened to besiege the prison if the authorities do not withdraw the special privileges for Chinmoy inside the prison.

In this regard, Kazi Tarek Aziz, additional commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), told Prothom Alo that the policemen dealt with the situation with utmost professionalism and patience. He denied any negligence in discharging their duties on the day.

You think Bangladesh govt. will ask India before banning a militant Hindutva outfit responsible for killings and unrest?

Their country - their rules.

If they do not ask, they will repent. I know Yunus is a puppet of radical Islamist of BD. Radical Islamist can dictate the term to him and he will do that to save his chair which he has illegitimately got by ousting elected P.M. However, if he does that, whole BD will pay the price.

Don't put too much faith in the power of beggar India. If we cancel the free transit deal your north east will experience famine in no time. We are not alone. We have powerful friends like China with us.

Rangpur is abuzz with the rhetoric and noise of the leaders of Puja Udjapan Parishad (Puja organizing committee) and Hindu-Buddhist Oikya Parishad (Hindu-Buddhist Unity committee) with the International Society of Krishna Consciousness-ISKCON at the exchange meeting on the issue of minority persecution. Muslim leaders from Hefazat and Jamaat were also present.

ISKCON leaders claimed that minority torture has happened in Rangpur. And the Puja Udjapan Parishad and the Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Parishad say that there was no incident of minority (Hindu) persecution in Rangpur. There was open screaming matches between the conveners on both sides of these Hindu orgs.

Most of the Sanatani orgs (other than ISKCON) also vehemently reiterated that ISKCON is not the representative of the Hindu community at large in Bangladesh.

Four days after lawyer Saiful Islam Alif had been hacked to death in Chattogram, a murder case was filed with the Kotwali police against 31 named and 10–15 unidentified people early Saturday amid protest demanding justice for the killing.

The victim’s father Jamal Uddin filed the murder case.

Saiful’s elder brother Khane Alam filed another case with the same police station over attacks and vandalism carried out on a Chattogram court premises against 116 named individuals and 400–500 unnamed people, said Chattogram Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Kazi Md Tarek Aziz.

With these two, five cases had been filed so far over the murder of assistant public prosecutor in Chattogram Saiful Islam Alif near court premises and clashes between members of law enforcement agencies and followers of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari on November 26.

The killing and clashes happened when the police was taking Chinmoy Krishna Das, arrested in a sedition case to jail under a court order.

Saiful’s family filed two cases and police filed three, all leading to, so far, arrest of 38 people, including nine allegedly identified for killing the lawyer.

In Dhaka city on Saturday morning, Bangladesh Krishi Bank Jatiyatabadi Forum held a rally in front of the bank’s head office in Motijheel area, protesting at the killing.

Speakers at the rally alleged that ousted fascist Awami League government killed the lawyer in a planned way to spark anarchy.

The named accused in the murder case include Chandan, Aman Das, Shuvo Kanti Das, Bunja, Ranab, Bidhan, Bikash, Ramit, Rumit Das, Nayan Das, Gagan Das, Vishal Das, Omkar Das, Vishal, Rajkapur, Lala, Samir, Sohel Das, Shiv Kumar, Biglal, Parash, Ganesh, Om Das, Poppy, Ajay, Devi Charan, Dev, Joy, Durlav Das, Rajib Bhattacharya, all reportedly residents of the Bandel Road Sebak Colony under the city’s Kotwali police, according to the case documents.

When the court ordered Chinmoy Krishna Das to be sent to jail rejecting his bail plea, his lawyers became agitated, made offensive remarks targeting the court, and caused chaos on the premises, the case statement said.

Chinmoy followers blocked the prison van for about two–three hours, and when members of police, Border Guard Bangladesh and Ansar tried to disperse them, they created chaos chanting provocative slogans and vandalised 20–30 vehicles, the case statement added.

Later that day, around 4:30pm, the accused allegedly targeted Alif due to his beard and attacked him with sharp weapons leaving marks in 21–22 places of his body.

In the case statement, Alif’s father also alleged that after speaking with witnesses and his son’s colleagues, he discovered that the murder was carried out with direct and indirect instigation from leaders and activists associated with the Chhatra League, Juba League, Awami League, and other organisations affiliated to it.

The lawyers’ death sparked protests in Dhaka and Chattogram as elsewhere in the country demanding justice and also a ban on ISKCON in Bangladesh.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was formerly a leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, ISKCON in short.

Three leaders of banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, meanwhile were arrested on Saturday in a case filed over vandalising a temple run by the ISKCON in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab.

The arrested are Chhatra League Bhairab municipality unit joint general secretary Hasibul Hasan, library affairs secretary Md Sanjib and Bhairab upazila unit joint general secretary Md Pranto.

Bhairab police officer-in-charge Md Shahin said that the incident occurred at ‘Sri Sri Hare Krishna Namhatta Sangha’ at Ranibazar Haludpatti in the upazila Friday afternoon.

‘We have so far arrested three suspects in connection with the incident. They are Chhatra League leaders,’ he said.

Pranay Karmakar, a resident of the Tinpatti area of the town, filed the case with the Bhairab police against unidentified people, he said.

At 5:00pm, 15–20 people attacked the temple with sticks, the case statement said.

Amid ongoing tensions between India and Bangladesh, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed concern over the situation in the neighboring country in the aftermath of the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das.

He also mentioned that the Committee on External Affairs has called a meeting on the situation in Bangladesh on 11 December. The committee is currently headed by MP Shashi Tharoor.

"...If the government has something to say on behalf of the Foreign Ministry, it would be good if (External Affairs Minister) S Jaishankar comes to Parliament and tells us. We have called a meeting of the External Affairs Committee on 11 December to know the details about Bangladesh. We are concerned about whatever is going on in Bangladesh. All minorities should get democratic rights in their country," he said.

"But it would not be appropriate to talk too much as this matter does not concern our country," Shashi Tharoor added.

The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for his immediate release. Uddhanand Das, a pracharak of the ISKCON branch in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, termed the interim government in Bangladesh as "anti-Hindu."

"Our goal is to condemn the anti-Hindu government in Bangladesh... We should unitedly come together and support Hindus," Das told ANI.

On Thursday, ISKCON expressed solidarity with priest Chinmoy Krishna Das. In a post on X, ISKCON stated, "ISKCON Inc. stands with Chinmoy Krishna Das. Our prayers to Lord Krishna for the protection of all these devotees."

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh's national flag. He was presented before a Chittagong court on 25 November. The court denied his bail plea and sent him to custody.

Although China did not help Pakistan by sending its own troops in a war against India, if you look at the defense industry of Pakistan, you will notice that almost all of the heavy military hardware technology was provided by China. Tank, aircraft, frigate, and submarine technologies were transferred by China. Pakistan's nuclear reactors were purchased from China.

China is more focused on Taiwan (South China Sea), and the Middle East (Israel-Palestine war and US-Iran Feud). This is precisely why China has decided to put minimum resource in China-India feud. Your problem is you think India is a superpower which is utterly wrong. Your opinions are far from reality.

Problem with this Chinmoy guy is that his actions are not limited to priesthood.

He is a rabid firebrand (loose cannon) and openly calls for taking "badla" (revenge) on Muslims who criticize anything about ISKCON. And which has been carried out by ISKCON devotees, resulting in the murder of a CMM Court Lawyer and massive destruction of public and private property. Such actions by a specific minority religious group is unprecedented. It may be unprecedented in the whole subcontinent.

This cannot be tolerated by the govt. apparatus who maintain law and order. Law breakers (whomever they are) must be brought to book. Chinmoy will be subject to a trial and will face the sentencing given by the courts.

I'd say other political parties critical of ISKCON (BNP, the Hefazat and Jamaat in Chittagong) have all shown excellent restraint in the face of these untoward events affecting public life. They have issued proclamations - but that is about the extent of their actions.

But these public unrest events spawned by ISKCON (with the implied involvement of incumbent BJP govt. of India and their intelligence wing) cannot be tolerated by any govt. such as the one in Bangladesh currently. It is easy to understand why, as their puppet has been kicked out of Bangladesh.

Action against any law-breaker will be taken, regardless of the noise any foreign govt. makes.

Bangladesh' govt. is not anti-Hindu or anti-any-religion. However they will not tolerate targeted action to foment unrest.

Bangladesh is a sovereign country and has their own sovereign rules and laws.

Two cases filed over killing of Ctg lawyer

Father of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was hacked to death during Tuesday's violence on the Chattogram court premises, yesterday filed a murder case against 31 named and 10 to 15 unidentified others.

Jamal Uddin lodged the case with Kotwali Police Station, Kazi Tarek Aziz, ADC (public relations) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star.

Most of the accused are the dwellers of Sebak Colony in the Bundle Road area of the port city, the ADC said. So far, nine people were arrested in connection with the killing after scrutinising CCTV footage, he added.

According to the case statement, the attackers -- some named in the FIR -- armed with weapons such as machetes, tridents, and cleavers -- carried out a premeditated attack on Saiful while chanting slogans in favour for former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who was arrested in a sedition case. Saiful was attacked on his way home.

The statement claimed that individuals affiliated with political organisations, including Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League, either directly or indirectly instigated the murder.

It also mentioned that the plaintiff came to know that from Saiful's colleagues and local sources following his death.

On Tuesday, police, lawyers, and followers of Chinmoy, also spokesperson for Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, clashed when the followers blocked a prison van after a Chattogram court sent the former ISKCON leader to jail in a sedition case filed over disrespecting the national flag.

Chandan Das, a key accused in the murder case, was seen wearing a helmet with an orange T-shirt and a black pair of pants. He was carrying a sharp weapon and was seen hacking Saiful in the CCTV footage, said police.

Meanwhile, Saiful's brother Khan-e-Alam yesterday lodged another case accusing 115 people, including two local journalists of Chattogram, for attacking lawyers, vandalism, and exploding crude bombs on the court premises on Tuesday.

Among the accused, 70 are lawyers and two are journalists. Besides, 400-500 unidentified were sued under the Explosive Substances Act.

With the two new cases, a total of five cases have so far been lodged with Kotwali Police Station over the violence and killing.

Court sources said senior lawyer and former president of Mahanagar Puja Udjapan Parishad Chandan Kumar Talukdar, Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad General Secretary of Chattogram unit lawyer Nitai Prashad Ghosh, Mahanagar Puja Udjapan Parishad acting secretary lawyer Nikhil Kumar Nath, lawyers Chandan Das, Rubel Paul, Suman Achharya, and Ashirbad Kumar Biswas are among the accused.

Sukhlal Das, former secretary of Chattogram Press Club and senior reporter of Dainik Azadi, and Ayan Sharma, adviser to local daily Chattogram Pratidin, were also sued in the case, the sources added.

Denying the allegation, lawyer Nikhil told journalists that slain lawyer Saiful was their colleague and brother. Those who murdered him must be punished. But the matter of sorrow is that 70 of the 115 accused are lawyers. All are members of Bijoya Sammilan Parishad, a platform of Hindu community lawyers in Chattogram.

"No lawyers were involved in any kind of vandalism or attacks," he claimed.

Journalist Sukhlal also dismissed the allegation brought against him.

Police also filed three cases against 79 named individuals and 1,400 unknown others over the assault, vandalism, and obstruction of police in performing their duties during Tuesday's clash.

Authorities have arrested 34 people, including nine suspects linked to Saiful's murder. The nine were identified after scrutinising the CCTV footage, according to police.

What nonsense ?!?

Is Hindu or Muslim written on your forehead? One is free to worship whomever they like in Bangladesh.

Obviously you have never been to Bangladesh - you don't know our culture. It is nothing like India at present.

So many of our friends have multi-religious parents, they are free to chose whichever religion they like.

Bangladeshi Hindus are our own brothers and sisters, they would prefer to be dead before they went to India.

Bangladesh is their own country - why would they leave?

You need to visit Bangladesh someday so you can see what you don't know.

The only people attacking temples in Bangladesh are Awami Leaguers - out to cause trouble (some on Indian instigation as is being proven in a few cases).

Two South Asian Neighbors, Once Friendly, Are Now at Bitter Odds

India and Bangladesh have traded angry accusations about Bangladesh’s Hindu minority.

Saif Hasnat and Anupreeta Das reported from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Mujib Mashal from New Delhi.
Nov. 28, 2024

Months of simmering tension between India and Bangladesh erupted into the open this week, as the once-friendly neighbors exchanged angry accusations after the arrest of a Hindu priest in Bangladesh on charges of sedition.

In August, Sheikh Hasina, an ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, was toppled as Bangladesh’s leader by a popular uprising. She fled to India, and her continued presence there has strained relations between the interim government in Bangladesh and Mr. Modi’s government in New Delhi.

The caretaker administration in Bangladesh, led by the 84-year-old Nobel Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, has expressed concern that Ms. Hasina is plotting a return to power from India. The interim Bangladeshi leaders have also accused India of exaggerating attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh to score political points at home.

The latest flashpoint was the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu monk in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority country where Hindus make up less than 10 percent of a population of 170 million.

In the past, Mr. Das was associated with an influential global Hindu organization, the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, also known as ISKCON or the Hare Krishna Society.

A court in the Bangladeshi city of Chattogram sent him to pretrial detention under a colonial-era sedition law. His arrest came after a local politician complained that Mr. Das had disrespected the Bangladeshi flag by raising it lower than a saffron-color flag — a symbol of Hinduism — at a rally calling for an end to persecution of Hindus.

The events took a deadly turn when the monk’s supporters surrounded the court. As the security forces struggled to control the situation, a Muslim lawyer was hacked to death, police officials said. The killing was followed by reports of attacks and intimidation in Hindu neighborhoods.

It remains unclear who killed the lawyer. The police have arrested more than 20 people over the violence. The city’s lawyers have gone on strike to protest the killing.

In a statement, India’s Foreign Ministry said it was unfortunate that “a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings” was facing legal trouble while extremists behind attacks against minorities, including “desecration of deities and temples,” remained free.

The chapter of Mr. Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party in the Indian state of West Bengal, which borders Bangladesh, has threatened to blockade the border if the monk is not released.

Bangladesh’s Hindus have long faced prejudice and persecution, and their numbers have shrunk in the face of growing intolerance and rising Islamist militancy.

Ms. Hasina ran a police state that coordinated closely with India and kept a lid on some of the extremist elements who have come out in the open since her fall. But deadly attacks against Hindus took place during her reign as well.

Officials in Mr. Yunus’s interim government have promised equal protection for all Bangladeshis. They have said that India has turned the plight of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority into an emotional political ploy to undermine the movement that toppled New Delhi’s favored leader, Ms. Hasina.

The officials point to an unabated barrage of exaggeration and disinformation emanating from India. Right-wing social media accounts and news media loyal to the Indian government often use terms like genocide to describe the widespread violence that left hundreds of people dead following Ms. Hasina’s ouster, though Hindu leaders in Bangladesh said that only a few were from their community.

In an interview with The New York Times last week, Mr. Yunus acknowledged that the relationship with Bangladesh’s giant neighbor was strained. He listed India’s protection of Ms. Hasina and what he said was “propaganda” from India painting his government as overrun by extremists as factors aggravating relations.

“She is in India. She keeps talking. That’s a bit destabilizing for the whole country,” he said. “And we try to draw attention to the Indian government that this is not fair. You are giving ground to somebody who was thrown out from Bangladesh, and you’re giving her a voice.”

Mr. Yunus said that India was “trying to project” an image that Bangladesh under him was becoming “like Afghanistan.” That, he said, was making the already difficult task of charting a new course for his country even harder.

“If you destabilize Bangladesh,” he said, “you destabilize yourself — because these elements of destabilization will spill over everywhere, all around us.”

But analysts said that Mr. Yunus’s government had not helped itself by jailing the monk under a colonial-era law that Ms. Hasina had used to crush dissent.

Some of her worst practices, such as mass cases against opposition members, have continued.

“Terms like ‘sedition’ and ‘conspiracy to destabilize the situation’ are being used, which we have seen before,” said Nur Khan Liton, an adviser to Bangladesh’s Human Rights Support Society, a watchdog.

Sarjis Alam, a leader of the student protests that toppled Ms. Hasina, called for a ban on ISKCON in Bangladesh, labeling it an “extremist organization” that was aligning with India to “plot against us.”

ISKCON’s Bangladesh leaders said the group was law-abiding and expressed sadness at the death of the Muslim lawyer outside the courthouse. They have distanced themselves from Mr. Das after an initial statement of support.
