U.S.-Bangladesh Joint Military Exercises
By U.S. Embassy Dhaka
July 20, 2025

The Armed Forces of Bangladesh and the United States military will continue their longstanding partnership this summer through three joint exercises and the delivery of a new capability that will reinforce our common security interests. These efforts help to make the United States and Bangladesh stronger, and the region safer.

Exercise Tiger Lightning:  For the fourth year in a row, the Bangladesh Army and U.S. Army Pacific will conduct Exercise Tiger Lightning.  Through realistic training, our soldiers will develop readiness for counterterrorism, peacekeeping, jungle operations, medical evacuations and countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Exercise Tiger Shark 2025: Tiger Shark (part of the Flash Bengal series) is a joint training exercise where our two countries’ Special Forces practice combat tasks.  The exercise, ongoing since 2009, will feature patrol boat handling and small arms marksmanship that will strengthen Bangladesh’s Special Warfare Diving and Salvage and the Para Commando Brigade ability to respond to crises.   One of the highlights of this combined exercise is the use of U.S. equipment by both countries.

Exercise Pacific Angel:  This will be the fourth iteration of Pacific Angel with Bangladesh.  It will highlight one of the hallmarks of our defense relationship, our C-130 fleets, which are critical in disaster response airdrops and air mobility operations.  The exercise also focuses on Search and Rescue (SAR) and Aeromedical operations further developing Bangladesh’s ability to respond to humanitarian disasters.

RQ-21 Program Launch:  The United States is working with Bangladesh’s Army and Navy to develop an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) capability for Bangladesh.  A Bangladesh Regiment comprised of Army and Navy personnel will operate the new RQ-21 Blackjack system.  This joint effort will enable Bangladesh to monitor its maritime domain, secure its borders, and conduct peacekeeping missions.

Military cooperation between Bangladesh and the US armies is going on for many years. Exercise Tiger Lightning is conducted to improve the training standard of both the armies. Such military exercise as Tiger Lightning is a unique opportunity for Bangladesh army to get first hand experience of the higher training standard of the US army. A huge thank you for the US army from Bangladesh:)

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M Riaz Hamidullah has met Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi amid efforts to revive bilateral ties following recent strains.

The Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information disclosed the meeting in a Facebook post on Thursday.

According to the post, the two officials "deliberated on enhancing bilateral defence cooperation, including joint training initiatives."

They also "explored opportunities for deeper collaboration aimed at promoting regional peace and security".

The meeting marks a notable shift in the diplomatic climate between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Relations between the two countries cooled after the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government in 2024.

Tensions persisted during Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration, marked by reciprocal diplomatic summons and public grievances.

India had indicated it preferred to engage with an elected government rather than the interim administration.

However, a thaw in relations began early this year following a message of condolence from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after the passing of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

This was followed by a visit from India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the attendance of Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the inauguration of the new BNP-led government on Feb 17.

High Commissioner Hamidullah, who joined the New Delhi mission in April 2025, previously met with Jaishankar on Mar 20.

This interaction with the military leadership comes just ahead of Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s scheduled visit to Delhi on Apr 7.

Meetings are being arranged with Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
