PTI-SIC names Omar Ayub as NA leader of opposition

The PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) alliance has formally nominated Omar Ayub Khan for the leader of the opposition by submitting his documents to the office of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

The nomination papers were submitted by Malik Amir Dogar in the presence of SIC supremo Sahibzada Hamid Raza, MNAs Ali Mohammad Khan, Riaz Fatyana, Dr Nisar Ahmad Jatt and others.

While talking to Dawn, Dr Jatt, who defeated PML-N’s stalwart Rana Sanaullah in general elections, said: “All the members supported by the PTI have signed the nomination papers.

“As per my information, Mehmood Khan Achakzai has also signed the document. However, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl and Balochistan National Party-Mengal have not signed it.”

By not signing the documents for Ayub’s nomination, the JUI-F and BNP-M will be under no legal obligation to boycott any session of the National Assembly on the call of opposition leader.

Responding to a question, Dr Jatt expressed the hope that Ayub would become the opposition leader in the NA through nomination, instead of election, on March 13 or 14
Pakistan's PTI slams poll body after Senate election delayed in a province
Election for the upper house of parliament in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa delayed by the election commission after row over reserved seats.
Pakistan's main opposition party has condemned a decision by election authorities to delay a vote for seats in the upper house of parliament from a province the party holds, calling it a continuation of "mandate theft" conducted since February's general election.

The elections to fill half of the Senate's 96 seats are held every three years in Pakistan. The members, who have six-year terms, are elected by legislators in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, and in the four provincial assemblies. The seats in the Senate are determined by the numbers held by different parties in the national and provincial assemblies.

ISLAMABAD: "The jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and the ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi were not allowed to offer Eid prayers."

This was stated by the daughter of former foreign minister Qureshi, Meher Bano Qureshi, who said that both Khan and her father were not allowed to offer Eid prayers at Adiala jail.

Former president Dr Arif Alvi, in a series of posts on X, condemned the highhandedness of the jail authorities for not allowing the former prime minister and the foreign minister to offer Eid prayers.

He further said that another party member Ejaz Chaudhary wasn't allowed to do so either but "he led the prayer with Omar Cheema in their cell."

On April 9, Dr Arif Alvi posted that Imran Khan's ban on Eid prayers reminded him of the British rule. He wrote about a famous leader in India's freedom struggle when he was sentenced by the occupying authorities.

He remarked, "He [Indian leader] remained in prison for four years and during that time Eid prayers were not even allowed. Because these oppressive rulers wanted to destroy the leadership of Muslim India, one of the various tactics to weaken their patriotism was to ban Friday and Eid prayers as well."

The Adiala jail could not be reached for comments despite several attempts at his cellphone for comments.

Former Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry is likely to rejoin the PTI while the internal strife within the party over the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament has intensified, it emerged on Saturday.

According to party sources, PTI founding chairman Imran Khan has given his nod to Fawad's return and they are both expected to meet next week.

They added that Fawad was also likely to be assigned an important responsibility in the PTI. The PTI leadership has also supported the former federal information minister's return to the party.

At the same time, differences within the PTI have escalated over who will head the PAC with party leader Sher Afzal Marwat bashing his fellow Shibli Faraz on the issue.

Marwat has demanded that Shibli should retract his statement.

Earlier in the day, Shibli told the media that the PTI would name its candidate for the PAC top slot in a day or two. He added that the PTI founding chairman had nominated Marwat for the position but changed his mind after the National

Assembly speaker's office raised an objection over his name.

The PTI leader continued that Imran had now nominated Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza for the slot.

"The PAC chairman should be from Punjab," he added.

Shibli blamed the NA speaker for creating the confusion.

However, Marwat insisted that the the PTI founding chairman had nominated him for the PAC chairman's position.
"He [Imran] has frequently mentioned me as his candidate for the slot," said.

He added that if Shibli had said that the PTI founding chairman had nominated the SIC chief for the PAC chairmanship, it was his own desire, not that of Imran.

Marwat accused Shibli of misrepresenting the PTI founding chairman, claiming that Imran had never nominated Raza for the PAC chairmanship.

New Age Desk 03 August, 2024, 22:35

One of founding members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was shot dead in Valencia Town of Lahore as he came out of a mosque after offering Friday prayers.

Shahid Siddique went to offer prayers in Khizra Mosque at H-block of Valencia Town. Siddque offered the prayer and came out of the mosque and was heading to his car when an unknown man approached him and shot at and injured him.

The suspect fled the scene on foot, reports Dawn.

The victim suffered four bullet injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital where he could not survive. The deceased Siddique also worked as Lahore Transport Company chairman during the PTI government.

Police shifted the body to the morgue for autopsy.

Party 'devastated', says it will stand with victim's family to ensure justice

The victim's son told Dawn that an unidentified attacker approached his father outside the mosque and opened fire at him before fleeing.

He said he accompanied his father at the time of shooting. However, he was unaware of motive for the murder, claiming that they did not have enmity with anyone.

Punjab police chief Usman Anwar ordered immediate action to apprehend the perpetrator(s) and sought a detailed report from DIG Operations.

SSP Investigations Anoosh Masood, who visited the crime scene and inspected evidence collection, told the media that a team led by Model Town SP investigations was constituted to arrest those behind the murder.

She vowed that the family of the deceased would be provided justice.

The PTI leaders have strongly condemned the killing of party's founder member Dr Shahid Siddique in Valencia Town.

PTI senior leader Zulfi Bukhari tweeted that he was devastated to learn the assassination of Siddique. 'Getting shot in cold blood after Friday prayers has left us all in absolute shock,' he stated.

Bukhari said Siddique was a loving human being and served PTI and Imran Khan for decades.

Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, he stated he would be missed.

'My condolences are to my younger brother Qayyum and the entire family. Please have patience and be strong. We are all with you during these tough times,' he said.

Lahore PTI president Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar, in a video message, said the party would be standing with the family of the deceased and ensure that they get justice.

Imran puts onus of apology on army for his detention

Imran Khan

Former prime minister Imran Khan has claimed that the army owes an apology to him since he was 'abducted' by the Rangers on May 9, 2023.

The PTI leader's remarks came during a media talk at Adiala Jail where he was asked that the army wants those behind violent protests of May 9 to apologise and whether he would tender an apology.

Khan further said he was arrested by the Rangers, which is headed by a serving major general, from the premises of the Islamabad High Court, reports Dawn.

Since May 7, when ISPR director general Major General Ahmed Sharif said any dialogue with the PTI could happen if the party apologised for its 'politics of anarchy', Khan has repeatedly said he had no reason to apologise.

However, over the past few weeks, Khan has repeatedly expressed his willingness to talk to the army and not with the government.

He reiterated the same position on Saturday when he said he would only hold talks with the 'real authority' as negotiations with the government is 'a futile exercise'.

Talks with the government will be counter-productive as there is an unannounced martial law in the field, he alleged.

He added that talks with 'people in the power corridors' would be within the ambit of the Constitution.

Responding a question that Mahmood Khan Achakzai has declined to become the focal person for proposed talks with the establishment, Khan said the PkMAP leader had been nominated to negotiate with political parties.

Earlier this week, the ex-PM said his party was ready for talks with the military establishment but laid down preconditions: the return of his party's 'stolen mandate', the release of all detained party workers, and the holding of transparent elections.

He had also urged the military to nominate their representatives for talks.

The former PM also said he twice suffered from food poisoning as he had no refrigerator in his cell to preserve the food properly.

Talking about the new Toshakhana reference in which he and his wife are the accused, Khan said the case was a 'clear violation of the National Accountability Ordinance'.

The PTI founder claimed he was still in possession of the Graff watch, which he is accused of selling in the NAB reference.

According to Khan, after a raid at his Banigala residence in March last year, he had moved his valuable possessions to a safer location.

He warned of legal proceedings against the NAB chairman, interior minister and those officers who implicated him in 'false cases'.

Earlier, the accountability court adjourned proceedings in the 190m pounds corruption reference till Aug 7.

Since Khan's counsel was not available, the cross-examination of the investigation officer, Mian Umar, couldn't be completed.

The PTI leader's legal team has filed an application before the judge, Nasir Javed Rana, to allow Khan to call his children.

The court issued notices to the jail administration and adjourned the hearing.
