Six people from Sri Lanka, including a mother and four young children, were knifed to death in the Canadian capital Ottawa late on Wednesday, police said on Thursday, rocking a country where mass murders are rare.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was horrified by what he called a "terrible tragedy." The father of the family was also wounded in the attack and is in hospital.
Police said Febrio De-Zoysa, a 19-year-old male student from Sri Lanka, had been arrested and charged with six counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder. De-Zoysa knew the family and had been living in the house, they said.
The victims killed were a 35-year-old woman and her children aged 7, 4, 2 and 2 months, as well as a 40-year-old man who was an acquaintance of the family.
"This was a senseless act of violence perpetrated on purely innocent people," Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs told a televised news conference. Police said they had had no previous dealings with the suspect or the family.
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, in a social media post, said it was "one of the most shocking incidents of violence in our city's history".

Ottawa, which has a population of one million, saw 14 murders in 2023 and 15 in 2022.

The father who survived the attack, which killed his wife and four children, was in “great shock” on Thursday, said Bhante Suneetha.
The resident monk at Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery, which the family attended, said he visited his friend at the hospital.
He told Suneetha that nothing seemed “wrong” in the lead-up to the rampage, the monk said.
“They (even) helped him to celebrate,” he told The Canadian Press in an interview. “They organized a celebration of his nineteenth birthday last week, a few days ago.”
Police were called to the scene of a suburban home Wednesday night where they discovered the bodies of a mother, her four young children and a family friend from the aftermath of a vicious attack.

Yes, We also had Goan Christian teachers. They migrated to Pakistan during the 1947 partition. They are educated people.

Calling this monstrous criminal "a mental case" will take the guilt off him and prevent justice from taking place. We should not turn a grave crime into "a mental case." There will be no need for a court of law if every horrible killer is tagged as a person with a mental health condition.

My calling this a mental case was not to absolve him of his criminal intent.

It was just speculation on why he may have done it. If one is sane - they cannot do something like this. Hence - insane.

In any case - I should not have speculated.

Let the police and the judicial system do their job on finding out why he took all these lives when they were nothing but nice to him.

I understand your point of view. It is not always easy to accept crimes of this scale to be the work of a fully healthy person. However, I have long experience with dealing with otherwise healthy people who were doing wrongful things.
