Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been sued in four more cases over the killings of three people and the attempted murder of another person during the student-led mass uprising.

Three of the cases were filed with Dhaka courts yesterday while another murder case was filed in Bogura two days ago.

Several former ministers, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, top police officers and at least three journalists, were among the accused.

With these, Hasina is now facing 75 cases related to the protests, including 63 on murder charges, seven on allegations of crimes against humanity and genocide, three on charges of abduction, and two for other charges.

Hasina and 30 others were sued over the death of grocery shop owner Mizanur Rahman during the quota reform movement in the capital's Banasree on July 19. His father Kamal Hossain filed the murder case with the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain who asked Khilgaon Police Station to register it as a first information report (FIR).

The court asked the OC of the same police station to register an FIR over the death of 14-year-old Ashiqul Islam on the same day. Hasina and 26 others were accused in the case filed by Ashiqul's mother Arisha Afroz.

The third case was filed against Hasina and 50 others on charges related to the attempted murder of a lawyer of the Dhaka Bar Association during the students' quota reform protest on July 18.

Advocate Abdul Baset Shamim filed the case with the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain. The magistrate asked Mugda Police Station's OC to register the complainant's statement as an FIR.

In Bogura, Hasina, three local journalists and 130 others were sued in a murder case over the death of Md Shaheed, 35, who was shot dead on August 4, a day before Hasina's fall.

Shimu Begum, 34, the wife of the deceased, filed the case on Tuesday, said Bogura Sadar Police Station OC Saihan Olliullah.

Justice Shamsuddin Manik held in Sylhet border area

The Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel last night detained AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik, a retired judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, while fleeing the country.

"BGB detained Former judge Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik at the border while he was trying to flee to India," BGB's Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam told The Daily Star around midnight.

He, however, could not say any further details instantly.

Justice Manik has been co-accused in several cases filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet members and top Awami League leaders recently.

Justice Manik has been at the centre of controversy several times over the years for his judgements and activities during his tenure as judge and after retiring.

Manik was appointed as an additional HC judge on July 3, 2001 for two years. BNP, which came to state powers in 2001, did not confirm his appointment.

On March 2, 2009, Manik was reinstated as a judge in the court following an HC verdict after the AL government came to power.

He was appointed as a permanent HC judge on 25 March 2009.

On June 5, 2012, then-ruling AL lawmakers said in the parliament that Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik had violated the constitution by making "derogatory remarks" about the then-Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Md Abdul Hamid.

Earlier in the same day, during the hearing of a rule, Justice Manik observed that the Speaker (Hamid) had committed an offence tantamount to sedition by commenting in the House on an HC order. He also said the Speaker was completely ignorant of the apex court and the constitution.

Senior AL lawmaker Tofail Ahmed told parliament, "I was surprised to see how Justice Manik spoke against the Speaker and accused him of sedition. We have no words to censure him."

The same judge, Tofail added, had once punished a traffic police officer for failing to salute him on the road. "I think he is a sadist who gets pleasure by hurting people."

Tofail also accused Manik of forcefully sitting in business class seats on Biman flight though he bought economy class tickets through the misuse of his position.

On March 31, 2013, he was promoted to the Appellate Division. Manik retired on October 1, 2015. He was removed from the bench on orders from the then chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha. Manik had allegedly secretly recorded a conversation between him and Sinha, and published the conversation in The Daily Janakantha.

There are news reports that he passed away for being severely sick while attempting to pass Sylhet border to India. This is yet unconfirmed.

If true, then, Inna Lillahey wa Inna Ilaihey Raji'un. I may forgive him in death, but I know of many in Bangladesh who will not.

I have never been happier to see a "Syndicate Mafia Don" like him being arrested.

He was the number one person (I am told) as Syndicate controller and Indian produce importer who was responsible for the wild horse fluctuations for daily kitchen needs like Rice, Eggs and Vegetables. He spent more time in India than Bangladesh on one excuse or another (being a Hindu is a convenient excuse), and by the looks of consistently hobnobbing with RSS and VHP members in India, a strident Hindutva supporter operating in Bangladesh soil.

BFIU freezes bank accounts of former chief justice, attorney general

1724973467757.png

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) today asked banks to freeze all bank accounts belonging to former chief justice Obaidul Hassan and former attorney general Amin Uddin.

The anti-money laundering agency also ordered banks to block all accounts belonging to the respective spouse of the former chief justice and former attorney general, according to a letter sent by the agency to banks.

The latest move is a part of dozens of instructions given by the BFIU to lock accounts of top functionaries, including ministers, of the immediate past Awami League (AL) government, which was ousted by a mass uprising on August 5.

The AL, led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, ruled the country for 15 years, the longest tenure of any government since independence.

Amin Uddin, who was appointed as attorney general in October 2020, resigned two days after Hasina's fall.

Obaidul, who was appointed as the nation's 24th chief justice in September last year, quit on August 10.

Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court in Dhaka passed the order after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Abu Hena Ashiqur Rahman, who is also conducting the investigation, submitted an application.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir moved the petition on behalf of the ACC.

In the application, Jahangir said the former ministers and lawmakers, who have graft allegations against their names, were trying to flee the country. So, a travel ban is needed to prevent them from leaving the country.

The ACC informed the court that an investigation is underway into the allegations that they all amassed huge amounts of money through illegal means during their tenure.

The judge sent a copy of the order to the special superintendent of police (Immigration) of the Special Branch for the next course of action.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court on Monday issued an international travel ban on the ousted Awami League government’s 26 ministers, state ministers, and lawmakers who were facing allegations of amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.

Besides, the Anti-Corruption Commission initiated an inquiry against former AL lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul of Natore-2 constituency for the allegations of corruption and money laundering.

Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the travel ban on the 26 former ministers and lawmakers in response to two separate petitions submitted by anti-corruption commission deputy directors Mostafizur Rahman and Jahangir Alam, said the commission’s court inspector Amir Hossain.

Of those facing the travel ban, nine are former ministers— Hasan Mahmud of foreign affairs; Imran Ahmed of expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment; Tipu Munshi of commerce; Anisul Huq of law; Tazul Islam of local government, rural development, and cooperatives; Faridul Haque Khan of religious affairs; Hasanul Haque Inu of information; Golam Dastgir Gazi of textiles and jute; and Anwar Hossain Manju of environment, forest and climate change.
