BFIU freezes bank accounts of former chief justice, attorney general

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) today asked banks to freeze all bank accounts belonging to former chief justice Obaidul Hassan and former attorney general Amin Uddin.

The anti-money laundering agency also ordered banks to block all accounts belonging to the respective spouse of the former chief justice and former attorney general, according to a letter sent by the agency to banks.

The latest move is a part of dozens of instructions given by the BFIU to lock accounts of top functionaries, including ministers, of the immediate past Awami League (AL) government, which was ousted by a mass uprising on August 5.

The AL, led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, ruled the country for 15 years, the longest tenure of any government since independence.

Amin Uddin, who was appointed as attorney general in October 2020, resigned two days after Hasina's fall.

Obaidul, who was appointed as the nation's 24th chief justice in September last year, quit on August 10.​

A Dhaka court today issued a travel ban on 14 former Awami League ministers and lawmakers in connection with corruption allegations brought against them.

Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court in Dhaka passed the order after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Abu Hena Ashiqur Rahman, who is also conducting the investigation, submitted an application.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir moved the petition on behalf of the ACC.

In the application, Jahangir said the former ministers and lawmakers, who have graft allegations against their names, were trying to flee the country. So, a travel ban is needed to prevent them from leaving the country.

The ACC informed the court that an investigation is underway into the allegations that they all amassed huge amounts of money through illegal means during their tenure.

The judge sent a copy of the order to the special superintendent of police (Immigration) of the Special Branch for the next course of action.​

Tipu Munshi remanded for 4 days in murder case

A Dhaka court today placed former commerce minister Tipu Munshi on a four-day remand in connection with the murder of Sumon Shikder, 31, who was killed in the capital's Badda area during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider passed the order after police produced Tipu before the court, requesting a 10-day remand.

Sumon Shikder was brutally gunned down in front of Fuji Tower in Badda on July 19.

Following the incident, a case was filed based on a complaint lodged by Sumon's mother, Masuma Begum, against 179 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Tipu Munshi from the capital's Gulshan area early today.​

At least five more cases, including one on genocide charge and four on murder charges, were filed against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides on Wednesday night and Thursday.

Besides Hasina and her former cabinet colleagues, 29 senior journalists were also named in the genocide case.

Hasina, also the Awami League president, is now facing 82 cases filed after the fall of her government on August 5 in a mass uprising led by students.

She has been named in 68 murder cases, eight cases on genocide and crimes against humanity charges, one case for shooting at students and public, two abduction cases, one case for arson attack, one case for attempted murder and one case of attacking the motorcade of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

A complaint was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday against 29 senior journalists, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and 22 of her aides, accusing them of committing genocide and crimes against humanity during the recent student movement against discrimination.

This is the eighth complaint of genocide and crimes against humanity filed against Hasina after the fall of her government through a student-led mass uprising on August 5.

Md Golam Razzaq, the father of Nasib Hasan Riad —a first-year HSC student at Mirpur BCIC College who was killed during the unrest—lodged the new complaint with the ICT.

He alleged that his son was fatally shot by the police at around 6:00pm on August 5 in front of Reliance Hospital on Mirpur Road at Shymoli in Dhaka, while leading a victory procession following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Hasina had reportedly fled to India earlier that day.

The complaint named a total of 52 individuals, including 29 senior journalists, Sheikh Hasina, nine former ministers from her cabinet, two leaders of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies, seven senior police officers, two university academics, a retired Supreme Court judge, a lawyer, and an online activist.

Golam Razzaq accused the journalists of provoking the ousted prime minister during a press conference at her official residence on July 3 and through subsequent talk shows, which, he claims, incited bloodshed during the student protests.

The accused members of Hasina’s former cabinet included Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, Anisul Huq, Hasan Mahmud, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod president and former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Dhaka North former mayor Atiqul Islam.

The accused police officers are inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Harun-Or-Rashid, Habibur Rahman, Biplob Kumar Sarkar and National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre’s former director general Ziaul Ahsan.

The accused journalists are Nayeemul Islam Khan, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Farida Yasmin, Shyamal Dutta, Mozammel Babu, Nobonita Chowdhury, Subhas Singha Roy, Ahmed Jobaer, Tushar Abdullah, Saiful Alam, Naem Nizam, Abed Khan, Probhash Amin, Farzana Rupa, Shakil Ahmed, Mithila Farzana, Zayadul Ahsan Pintu, Munjurul Islam, Ashish Saikat, Manash Ghosh, Pranab Saha, Masuda Bhatti, Munni Saha, JE Mamun, Swadesh Roy, Soma Islam, Shyamal Sarker, Ajay Dash Gupta, and Ashraful Alam Khokan.

A case was filed against Hasina and 88 others with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday for killing Nahid Hasan Alem on July 19 in the Lakshmi Bazar area in the capital’s Old Town.

Kismat Ara, the mother of the victim filed the case with the court and the court asked the Sutrapur police to record the case.

The other accused in the case included AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud and former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

‘I want to see justice for my son’s killing,’ Kismat told New Age.

A case was filed on Thursday against 54 persons, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former law minister Anusil Huq, former housing and public works minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhuy and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, on charge of murder, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.

The case was filed against 54 named and 200-300 unnamed persons with the Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station in connection with shooting to death of Zahirul Islam on March 27 in 2021 centring the visit of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

On Wednesday night, two murder cases were filed against Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and Asaduzzaman Khan with the Sripur police station in Gazipur, New Age correspondent in Gazipur reported.

In the two cases, 95 were named and 1,100 unnamed people were made accused in connection with murders of Zakir Hossain, 35, and Rahmat Mia, 20, on August 5.

Victim Zakir’s father Jamal Uddin and Rahmat’s father Md Monju Mia filed the two cases at about 11:30pm on Wednesday, said Sripur police station officer-in-charge KM Sohel Rana.

The case statements said that the incidents took place on the same date and in the same place but the victims were different.​

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has decided to freeze the Beneficiary Owner's (BO) accounts of five former ministers and their 15 family members.

The stock market regulator on Thursday ordered the freeze in a commission meeting held at its head office in the city.

According to the order, their accounts will remain frozen until further notice, BSS reports.

Individuals will keep their funds, but any withdrawals will be disallowed during the freezing period.

The owners of the frozen BO accounts include former minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, his wife Lutful Tahmina Khan, his son Safi Muddaser Khan and his daughter Shafia Tasnim Khan.

Former foreign minister Mohammed Hasan Mahmud, his spouse Nurun Fatema Hasan and his daughter Nafisa Zumaina Mahmud, and former state minister Mohammad Ali Arafat and his wife Sharmin Mustary are also on the list.

Former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, his wife Arifa Jesmin Konika, Former MP Mohiuddin Maharaj, his wife Umme Kulsum, and his son Sammam Junaid Efti, former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, his spouse Rukhmila Zaman Chowdhury, his daughter Zeba Zaman Chowdhury, his relative Zara Zaman, his sister Roxana Zaman Chowdhury and his brother Anisuzzaman Chowdhury had their accounts frozen as well.

The BSEC said the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) decided to investigate the bank accounts of these individuals under the Money Laundering Act of 2012.

These individuals have investments in several stocks and may commit irregularities in the market, hence the BSEC has decided to freeze their BO accounts, it added.​

A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, and several other leaders in Kishoreganj over the killing of two BNP activists during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on August 4.

The case was filed following the complaint lodged by BNP activist Matiur Rahman today with Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station, naming 88 people, said Md Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Four former MPs Rezwan Ahmed Taufiq, Afzal Hossain, Sohrab Uddin and Noor Mohammad are among the accused.

Besides, 200-300 unknown individuals have been accused in the case, said the OC.

According to the case statement, on August 4, a procession of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and BNP leaders and activists was attacked in front of the District Awami League office.

AL leaders and activists attacked the participants of the procession with firearms, batons and sharp weapons.

During the attack, some BNP leaders and workers ran to save their lives and took shelter in the residence of District AL Assistant General Secretary Syed Ashfaqul Islam Titu in nearby Khormaptri area.

Later, AL activists confined them and set them on fire, killing two BNP activists Zulkar Hossain, 38, and Anjana, 28.

Apart from this, many others were injured due to bullets, sharp weapons and batons, said the statement.​

Hasina, also the Awami League president, is now facing 86 cases filed after the fall of her government on August 5 in a mass uprising led by students.

She has been named in 71 murder cases, eight cases on genocide and crimes against humanity charges, one case for shooting at students and public, two abduction cases, one case for arson attack, one case for attempted murder, one case of attacking the motorcade of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, and one for arresting 17 Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists foiling the party’s rally in Chattogram.

A case was filed against 313 people on Friday with the Munshiganj Sadar police station in the district, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides in connection with the killing of one Dipjol Sardar in violence during the movement of the Student Movement Against Discrimination on August 4, New Age correspondent in Munshiganj reported.

The victim’s grandmother Shefali Begum filed the murder case as the plaintiff with the police station in the morning, Munshiganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Aminul Islam confirmed the matter.

The other accused are former Road Transport and Bridges minister Obaidul Quader, also Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, ex-lawmaker of Munshiganj Mohammad Faisal Biplab, AL Munshiganj district unit president Md Mohiuddin, its general secretary Lutfor Rahman, former lawmakers Sagufta Yasmin Emily, lawyer Mrinal Kanti Das and former Sadar upazila chairman Anisuzzaman.

Besides, the other accused in the case also included 200-300 more unidentified people, including leaders and activists of the upazila Awami League and other organisations.

According to the case statement, on August 4, 2024, Dipjol was killed in the supermarket area in the district town, by AL-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League Munshiganj municipality unit general secretary Sajjad Hossain Sagar.

Another murder was filed against Hasina, former minister Obaidul Quader, and several other Awami League leaders in Kishoreganj on Friday over the killing of two BNP activists during the movement of the Student Movement Against Discrimination platform on August 4, United News of Bangladesh reported.

The case was filed by BNP activist Matiur Rahman on Friday with the Sadar Police Station, naming 88 people, including four former lawmakers Rezwan Ahmed Taufiq, Afzal Hossain, Sohrab Uddin and Noor Mohammad.

Besides, 200-300 unknown individuals have been made accused in the case.

Another case was filed against Hasina and 34 others with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka on Thursday for killing Bangladesh National Road Transport Workers Party Dhaka south city unit leader Hasan Mahmud in front of Goran Chhapra Masjid on July 31.

The victim’s wife Fatema filed the case with the court.

The court asked the Khilgaon police station to record the case, Khilgaon police station officer-in-charge Md Daud Hossain said.

‘We have received the court’s order at about 2:00pm on Friday and the process was underway to record the case,’ the OC Daud told New Age.

The other accused in the case included Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman, former jute and textile minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch chief Harun-Or-Rashid and DMP joint commissioner Biplab Kumar Sarkar.

A criminal case was also filed with a Chattogram court against ousted prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajib Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed along with 425 others on Thursday in the port city.

Mamun Ali, a businessperson filed the case with the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday afternoon.

Mamun said that he was celebrating the birthday of Khaleda Zia on august 15, 2016, while the then officer-in-charge of Halishahar thana stopped the programme and arrested him along with 17 other BNP activists.

Later, the OC demanded Tk 10 lakh to release them all.

But when the case was transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation, a group of lawyers protested at it.

Later, the court ordered the Halishahar police station to record the case as a first information report and investigate.

AM Humayun Kabir, deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police confirmed the news.

He said that additional forces were deployed at court yard due to demonstrations.

Three separate cases have been filed against 83 people including former foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, his daughter Nafisa Zumaina Mahmud, and brother Ershad Mahmud in Chattogram.

In these cases, 42 other unidentified people have been accused.

Of the cases, Dr Hasan Mahmud was made the prime accused in two cases while his daughter was made the prime accused in another case, as per UNB reports.

Three locals of Rangunia filed these cases with Chattogram Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday, magistrate's clerk Zainal Abedin said.

One of the cases was filed following a complaint lodged by Harun Rashid Prakash of Rangunia where Hasan Mahmud's daughter Nafisa Zumaina Mahmud, 9 named people, and 30 unknown people were accused.

According to the case statement, the accused grabbed land from the plaintiff through intimidation.

In another case filed by Md Osman, a resident of Chandraghona area of Rangunia, 32 people including Dr. Hasan Mahmud were named as accused.

Besides, 12 unnamed individuals were accused in the case.

In the case, the defendants were accused of extortion. The court ordered Rangunia police station to investigate the case.

A person named Kamal Uddin, a resident of Rangunia, was the plaintiff in another case.

A total of 42 persons including Hasan Mahmud were named as accused in the case where his brother Ershad Mahmud was named as the second prime accused.

The accused were charged with assaulting the plaintiff causing grievous injuries.

Dr Moin Uddin Ahmad, a lawyer of one of the plaintiffs, said that the victim could not file any case earlier against the accused due to their wealth and power.

"Hopefully, the plaintiff will now get justice as a better environment is prevailing in the country," he added.​

Azahar Uddin Rocky, joint secretary of Enayet Bazar Ward Swechasebak Dal, filed the case today naming 162 individuals, including Nowfel and others, and 300 to 350 unnamed persons for attacking, looting, and vandalising the BNP's Kazir Dewri Nasiman Bhaban Party office.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station SM Obaidul Haque confirmed the case.

In the case statement, former ward councillors and leaders from AL, Jubo League and BCL, equipped with firearms, gathered in the Kazir Dewri area on August 4 during the mass uprising of students and people against the Hasina-led government.

Following the orders of Nowfel and others, the armed men opened fire and detonated crude bombs in front of the party office, creating panic. At one point, they vandalised and looted valuables from the party office worth Tk 5,00,000, added the case statement.​

A defamation case has been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former Road Transport and Bridge minister Obaidul Quader with a court in Kurigram.

Manjurul Quader Maminul, a member of the executive committee of Kurigram's Ulipur upazila BNP, filed the case with Kurigram Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court today, said the plaintiff's lawyer Advocate Nazrul Islam.

The magistrate accepted the case and directed the officer-in-charge of Ulipur Police Station to investigate it, Nazrul told our Kurigram correspondent.

Ulipur Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Rezwanul Haque was also accused in the case.

According to the case statement, Dr Rezwanul had been working as an agent of the Awami League under the direct or indirect instructions of Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader. Maminul was present at an exchange meeting organised at the Ulipur Upazila Livestock Office on May 15, 2024. As Maminul is involved in BNP politics, Rezwanul abused him and BNP using indecent language.

When Maminul sought to know the reason for the abuse, Rezwanul hurled abuses against BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and party chief Khaleda Zia.

Due to such abuse in public, the plaintiff and his party leaders have suffered a considerable loss of dignity in society, which cannot be compensated even by Tk 10 crores, added the statement.​

Police have arrested former member of parliament for Dhaka-7 constituency Haji Mohammad Salim.

Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, Joint Commissioner of Police (North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police, told the media that he was arrested from Bangshal police station area in the capital on Sunday (September 1) night.

Haji Selim is accused in several murder cases.

Apart from politics, he owns several business entities. There are allegations of encroachment of public and private property against him.

Haji Salim was first elected member of parliament in 1996 with Awami League ticket.

The Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuted Haji Salim and his wife Gulshan Ara in 2007 on charges of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and withholding wealth information. The trial court sentenced him to 13 years in prison in the case on 27 April 2008.

In 2022, the High Court upheld Haji Selim's 10 years’ imprisonment. Later he surrendered to the court and the High Court granted him bail in January 2023.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court on Monday issued an international travel ban on the ousted Awami League government’s 26 ministers, state ministers, and lawmakers who were facing allegations of amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.

Besides, the Anti-Corruption Commission initiated an inquiry against former AL lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul of Natore-2 constituency for the allegations of corruption and money laundering.

Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the travel ban on the 26 former ministers and lawmakers in response to two separate petitions submitted by anti-corruption commission deputy directors Mostafizur Rahman and Jahangir Alam, said the commission’s court inspector Amir Hossain.

Of those facing the travel ban, nine are former ministers— Hasan Mahmud of foreign affairs; Imran Ahmed of expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment; Tipu Munshi of commerce; Anisul Huq of law; Tazul Islam of local government, rural development, and cooperatives; Faridul Haque Khan of religious affairs; Hasanul Haque Inu of information; Golam Dastgir Gazi of textiles and jute; and Anwar Hossain Manju of environment, forest and climate change.

Nine former state ministers facing the travel ban are—Zunaid Ahmed Palak of posts, telecommunications and information technology; Nasrul Hamid of power, energy and mineral resources; Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury of shipping; Md Zakir Hossain of primary and mass education; Meher Afroze Chumki of women and children affairs; Swapan Bhattacharjee of local government and rural development; Enamur Rahman of relief and disaster; Zahid Ahsan Russell of youth and sports; and Mohibbur Rahman of disaster management and relief.

Eight former lawmakers facing the ban are Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon (Joypurhat-2); Sheikh Helal Uddin (Bagerhat-1); AKM Sorwar Jahan (Kushtia-1); SK Afil Uddin (Jossere-1); Enamul Haque (Rajshahi-4); Benazir Ahmed (Dhaka-20); Kazi Nabil Ahmed (Jossere-3); and Shahidul Islam Bakul (Natore-1).

Anti-Corruption Commission officials in the petitions mentioned that inquiries were currently underway into allegations of amassing massive amounts of money through illegal means during their tenure as ministers and lawmakers.

The former ministers and lawmakers who are facing graft allegations might escape from the country and to prevent that travel ban is necessary, according to the petitions.

Earlier on August 29, the court also issued a travel ban on 14 former ministers and lawmakers of the ousted Awami League government in connection with allegations of acquisition of illegal wealth.

The anti-corruption agency has also initiated a separate inquiry against former lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul from Natore-2 over allegations of embezzling government funds, money laundering, and purchasing property in Canada. He also faces allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income, both in his name and in the names of his family members.

On August 15, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit instructed all banks to freeze the accounts of Shafiqul Islam Shimul, his wife Shamima Sultana Jannati and other family members, including his sons, daughters and parents, for 30 days.​

Police arrested two former inspectors general of police (IGPs) -- AKM Shahidul Hoque and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun -- from Uttara area early today.

Rezaul Karim Mallick, chief of the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed news of the arrests to The Daily Star.

"We arrested both the former police chiefs from Dhaka, and they are now in our custody," he said.

Asked which cases they would be shown arrested in, he said they would hold meetings in this regard and finalise the cases.

Both former police chiefs were wanted in a number of cases, including those filed over murders.

Shahidul Hoque served as IGP from December 2014 to January 2018z and Mamun served from September 2022 to August 5 this year, when the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled amid a mass upsurge.

This is also the first time in recent history that officials of the rank of inspector general of police were arrested.​

A case was filed was filed last night in Brahmanbaria against former housing and public works minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury and nine others over the abduction and disappearance of BNP activist Atiqul Islam in 2012.

According to the case statement, the accused killed Atiqul after abducting him, and his body has not yet been found.

Nasima Islam, Atiqul's wife, filed the case with Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station last night.

The case names 10 individuals: the former minister's two personal assistants MAH Mahbub Alam and Abu Musa Ansari, his close associate Hamdu Miah, businessmanSalim Miah and his brother Jasim Miah, Kazipara Five Star Club general secretary and former banker Ataur Rahman Bhuiya Shahin, Abul Kashem, Jilani and Zakir Miah.

The case also accuses seven to eight unnamed individuals.

Atiqul Islam, son of late Mominul Islam and a resident of Kazipara in Brahmanbaria municipality, has been missing since October 13, 2012.

According to the case statement, a land dispute between Atiqul and businessman Salim Miah, a resident of Kazipara, escalated in 2011. Salim, allegedly under the instruction of then-MP Muktadir Chowdhury, filed a case against Atiqul with Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station on October 17, 2011.

On October 13, 2012, around 3:00pm several of the accused arrived at Atiqul's house in two white microbuses and asked him to accompany them to Muktadir's residence. When Atiqul stepped outside, he was allegedly abducted by Muktadir's personal assistant Abu Musa Ansari and others.

Atiqul's family attempted to file a complaint at Sadar Police Station, but the police allegedly refused to accept the case due at Muktadir's intervention.

The case alleged that Atiqul was taken to a secluded location, tortured to death, and his body was dumped.

When contacted, Mohammand Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station, told The Daily Star that the complaint was registered as an FIR. Inspector Mohammad Humayun Kabir was ordered to investigate the incident.

Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, the former lawmaker from Brahmanbaria-3 constituency and ex-minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury has been in hiding.

Five cases including three murder cases have been filed against him in Brahmanbaria so far.​

Former shipping minister and Awami League presidium member Shahjahan Khan was arrested from Dhanmondi in Dhaka early Friday morning.

Md Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, joint commissioner (North) of the DMP’s Detective Branch (DB), confirmed the matter during a press briefing on Friday morning.

A DB team conducted a raid on a house in Dhanmondi and took Shahjahan Khan into custody around 3:00am, said the DMP official.

This development follows a decision last month by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to launch an investigation into Shahjahan, who represented the Madaripur-2 constituency in Parliament.

In 2014, the ACC had previously summoned him over allegations of irregularities in plot allocation and the accumulation of illegal assets. His affidavit for the 11th parliamentary election revealed substantial wealth, including two cars, 96 bhori of gold belonging to his wife, and two buses registered under her name.

Shahjahan Khan also served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.​

A charge has been brought against 36 persons, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 21 police personnel, at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka on charges of committing genocide and crimes against humanity over the death of a Manarat University student in police firing and burning his body to conceal it.

Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Abdus Sattar Paloan, on behalf of the deceased's sister Sayeda Akhter, filed the complaint with the ICT investigation agency on Thursday.

Ahnaf Abir Ashrafullah, who was killed in police firing in Ashulia on August 5, was the university's third year student of EEE Department, BSS reports.

Former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former posts and telecommunications state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former information and broadcasting state minister Mohammad Ali Arafat, former lawmaker of Savar-Ashulia constituency Md Saiful Islam, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdulah Al Mamun, former DB chief Harun-or-Rashid, former DIF of police Syed Nurul Islam, Dhaka district additional police super Mobashira Jahan, former police super Abdullahhel Kafi, former DB inspector Arafat Hossain and Ashulia Police Station officer-in-charge Nirmal Chandra, among others, were accused in the case.

In the complaint, it was alleged that 46 persons, including Manarat University student Ahnaf, were killed in indiscriminate police firing at a protest rally by 13-16 number accused at the directives of one to 12 number accused at Baipail under Ashulia Police Station on August 5 last.

The accused from 13-16 later piled the bodies in a vehicle beside the police station and set those on fire by pouring petrol aimed at hiding the incident of genocide.​

Two more cases were filed on Thursday and Wednesday against 126 including the deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet and party colleagues on charges of murder, arson attacks and vandalism in Feni and Nilphamari.

The case in Feni was lodged for killing young protester Mahbubul Hasan Masum in Mohipal area of the district in early August and the case in Nilphamari was lodged over arson attacks and vandalism on different offices of Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the district on August 4.

With these two cases, Hasina, also the president of Awami League, is now facing at least 102 cases including 12 complaints related to crimes against humanity and genocide since her resignation as prime minister amid a mass uprising led by students on August 5.

New Age correspondent in Feni reported that a case was filed against 662 people including Hasina and former lawmakers Masud Uddin Chowdhury and Nizam Uddin Hazari over the killing of Mahbubul.

The victim’s brother, Mahmudul Hasan, filed the case on Wednesday, said Md Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station.

According to the case statement, Mahbubul was shot in the head, chest and back during indiscriminate firing by AL leaders and activists in Mohipal during the movement over quota reform in government jobs on August 4.

Critically injured Mahbubul was taken to Feni General Hospital from where he was shifted to Chattogram’s Park View Hospital. On August 7, he was transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he died in the evening.

Another case was filed by Nilphamari district Swechchhasebak Dal leader Abdus Salam Babla against Hasina and 125 others with a court in the district on Thursday, New Age correspondent in the district reported.

The case was filed over arson attacks and vandalism on different offices of BNP in the district on August 4, said Mokbul Hossain, the district superintendent of police.

AL general secretary and former minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Central Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain and former Nilphamari-2 lawmaker Asaduzzaman Noor are among the accused named in the case.

Additionally, 300 unidentified individuals were also accused in the case.

New Age correspondent in Feni reported that a murder case was filed against former lawmaker of Feni-3 constituency, Masud Uddin Chowdhury, former lawmaker of Feni Sadar constituency, Nizam Uddin Hazari, and 355 people for killing Zafar Ahmed on August 4.

The victim’s wife Asia Begum filed the case with Feni Model Police Station Thursday night, said Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha reported that another murder case was filed against former Supreme Court judge, Justice M Enayetur Rahim, his younger brother and former lawmaker M Iqbalur Rahim and 103 others in connection with the killing of student Rabiul Islam Rahul during the anti-quota protest in Dinajpur on August 4.

Md Riyad, a resident of Pak Paharpur area of the district town, filed the murder case with Kotwali Police Station on Thursday, said officer-in-charge Md Farid Hossain.

The other accused in the case include Sadar Upazila Parishad’s former chairman Imdad Sarkar, Birganj Upazila Parishad’s former chairman Abu Hossain Bipu and district AL general secretary Altafuzzaman.​

A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Friday placed former shipping minister and Awami League presidium member Shahjahan Khan on seven-day remand in a murder case filed with the Dhanmondi police station on August 26.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mahbub Ahmed passed the order as the police produced him before the court seeking 10-day remand in custody for interrogation, police inspector Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter.

Victim Abdul Motalib’s father Abdul Matin filed the case with the Dhanmandi police station against 176 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Shajahan Khan.

Abdul Matin said that his son was a student of Class VIII and was killed on August 4 in violence during the student-led mass uprising near Jigatala Bus Stand.

Matin added that his son sustained bullet injuries.

In the early hours of Friday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch arrested Shahjahan Khan at a house in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

Later, he was taken to the DB office in the capital’s Minto road.

Earlier in 2014, the ACC summoned the former minister over allegations related to irregularities in plot allocation and accumulation of illegal assets.

His affidavit for the 11th parliamentary elections revealed his huge wealth, including two cars, 96 bhari of gold belonging to his wife, and two buses registered in the name of his wife.

He also served as a chairman of the standing committee of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

Shahjahan Khan was an Awami League lawmaker for Madaripur-2 constituency in Jatiya Sangsad dissolved after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and fleeing to India amid a student-led mass uprising.

Shahjahan was elected as a lawmaker with the AL nomination in general elections held in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024 from the same constituency.

Shahjahan, also the president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, became a lawmaker from the constituency in 1986 as an independent candidate for the first time.

The Rapid Action Battalion, meanwhile, has arrested former land minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif’s son Shirhan Sharif Tomal at Ishwardi upazila in Pabna, RAB-12 in a text message confirmed the matter to the media.

The agency also claimed that it had recovered an imported pistol, a magazine, four rounds of bullets, and 10 Yaba tablets as well as seized Shirhan’s car.

The RAB said that Shirhan was accused of launching attack on students during the movement of the Student Movement Against Discrimination platform.

RAB media and legal wing director Lieutenant Colonel Munim Ferdous said that the process of handing over the accused to the Ishwardi police station was underway.​

Two more cases have been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana over the killing of two youths in Gazipur during a mass protest on August 4.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former minister of Liberation War Affairs Advocate AKM Mozammel Haque and 217 others were accused in the cases.

Another 800 unidentified people have been accused in the two cases.

The relatives of the two deceased filed the cases with Kaliakoir Police Station on Friday night and last night, said Md Zobair, inspector (Operation) of the police station around 10:30pm yesterday.

The two deceased are Jasim Fakir, 36, son of Hayat Ali Fakir of Purba Chandra village of Kaliakair upazila, and Shahinur Mahmud Sheikh,40, a resident of Safipur area of the upazila.

Of the cases, one case was filed by Riaz Fakir, brother of Jasim, and another by Shahinur's wife Salma Begum, the inspector told our Gazipur correspondent.

According to case statements, Jasim Fakir was shot and killed in the Safipur area during the mass protest on the afternoon of August 4. Later, his body was recovered by his family. Shahinur Mahmud Sheikh, also a resident of Safipur was killed during the movement on the same day.​
