Income inequality has ballooned in India this century. Back in 2000, the top 1% of earners held 15.5% of national income. They now claim 23.1%. At the other extreme, the bottom 50% had 18.5% at the start of the 2000s but now share only 13.3%.

Though hundreds of millions of Indians have been pulled out of poverty, the very rich have become much richer. Campaigners have called for a more progressive tax system to deal with the issue and concerted action to bridge India's gender pay gap, which is among the widest in the world.

This is true for every economy which follows capitalist model. Communism keeps everyone poor to maintain equality. In capitalism, everyone gets basic things to survive. It is not their concern whether rich becomes more rich. Rich becoming more rich means more tax revenue. More money with government to spend on welfare schemes. Today, Indian government runs the welfare schemes which is not possible for any other government to run in world. Let the rich becomeore rich.

Most sane people (not just economists) think that income inequality is a BAD IDEA. Period.

Situation is getting worse and worse in India - more and more for the rich and less and even less for the poor.

You are unique among people that you think that this is okay - no matter what your excuse would be.

Most people would like to have the "human" dignity of a well-paying job to support their families.

I don't think Indians are different in this regard. Whether males/females or different ethnicities/castes.

Ultimately - there will be revolts of some sort and there will be chaos. Yes even in India with its subservient-minded population.

And India will break apart like it was before the Muslims (Mughals) united it. Indian observers have predicted this already.

We do not communist model where everyone is equal with all poor. It is a failed model. You can insist on your government to adopt it. Our economic model is working and we are happy with it and most important of all, we bother least about the opinion of people who have failed. Seems you have a comprehension issue about the poor getting poorer - they are NOT GETTING RICH. Life for the poor in India (bottom 50% of all wage earners) is getting extra hard with lowered income. Numbers don't lie.

If we by your logic, Russia, China and North Korea are economically batter than US as these countries have lower income disparity than US. However, if any news related to India, it is your holy duty to be anti India no matter to what extent you have to be illogical and nonsense. The fact of the matter is that we have almost removed hunger poverty and our richs are becoming richer and more and more of our population is getting post poverty amenities like houses, medical facilities, gas, electricity and other. Keep posting anything. Your country is still dependent on IMF, Indian line of credit and US aid. Your country is not self sufficient in even food grain. So keep bluffing anything from one hand and keep asking for food grain on other hand. That is your present and that will be your future.
