Played all types.
In Delhi our school had lot of space, including a full sized ground where we could play with pads, helmet, guards and stuff. It's actually very annoying. Limits your movement, sight, everything. In our apartment it was tennis ball cricket.
Then in Bombay it was rubber ball cricket like doc said. Occasionally we would rent out space in Oval Maidan / Azad Maidan near Churchgate to play the real stuff. Wasn't a lot of fun. There are so many groups playing at one time, their ball could hit you while fielding. Crazy stuff. Typical Bombay 'adjust madi' reality.
Thats exactly how Gavaskar and Tendulkar grew up. Even we had two big grounds. With cement steps made all along the school boundary wall, for seating parents and relatives during sports day and cricket and football matches. The last step would have multiple sets of red brick drawn wicket lakeers and at any given time 8-10 matches would be on at the same time. In a row.

This ball was a lot of fun. Hitting sixes was very easy. Cheap also. But the bounce was high, which meant that length deliveries would go over the batsman's head. You had to constantly over pitch the ball. I started bowling a lot of yorkers because of this. Short pitch deliveries were out of the question.
Correct!
