Although I am not a fan of typecasting people and their behaviors, I will let this one slide.

Please no derogatory posts on Gujaratis or any other groups. I will lock the thread if I see any sign of that.

One Gujarati (or even a few) does not speak for every Gujarati.

I count many ethnicities of Indians as my personal respected friends and Gujaratis (some Patels) are among them. Been to many Raas Gharbas and enjoyed the experience, ditto on the food, especially from Surat.

This platform will not be used to spread hate along ethnic lines.

No let him post that. Being a Gujju, I favour such kind of criticism though it may be biased or exaggerated. That helps the reality to be known. People should have right to know the truth.

Most of the Gujaratis I know from my time in Mumbai and some business connections are decent chaps. There are housing societies in Mumbai and GJ where non vegetarians are frowned upon, I have experienced this personally. But then I have seen this kind of behaviour in vegetarian dominated areas of most cities. I neither agree with the original tweet praising Ahmedabad, nor do I agree with the response to that tweet. The truth is always somewhere in between. GJ is not a great place to work if you are used to the vibe of Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad, even Delhi. Coldplay or Hotplay, doesn't matter.

I will add that among the business communities I don't have many friends. They tend to be too much about business and financial success and not very inclined to other kinds of discussions. Sindhis are somewhat of an exception. Temperamentally they are quite similar to Khatri punjabis. Know how to balance business and fun

How is it hate?

A Gujarati made this tweet

Gujarati Taqiya : If Gujaratis get called for their Scamming Bania behaviour, show it as an attack on India and Indians.

Saar they are not attacking Chor Adani but India Saar.

This is not a "hate speech" issue.

I said that this is "derogatory" to a specific group, namely Gujaratis. This platform will not be used to put down a specific group.

That is a subjective thing sometimes. Some things are mentioned between close friends but are unwelcome from strangers.

For example in polite company, I never mention the word "Gujju" which I feel is a slightly derogatory "slur".

If someone calls me a "Bong" I probably will not mind but coming from people I don't personally know - this is unwelcome.

Some gujaratis may be okay with being called "gujju" but I will err on the side of caution. I always use respect as a preamble.

If someone calls me a "Chaddi" or "Lungi" I definitely will mind, because there is mal-intention involved - to make someone feel small and insignificant, something lesser than respectable and a put-down. That is a "serious" slur, unwelcome in any conversation, even in forums.

I correct myself too - if one Hindutva person says something hateful, not all Hindutva believing Indians are guilty. There is difference between Hindus and Hindutvas of course. Hindus are a much larger group.

In this specific instance - there is intent to "typify" Gujaratis as selfish (or "baniya"), whether it is coming from a "Gujarati" himself or not is irrelevant, people on the Interwebs can pretend to be what they are not. We have to look at the intent of the message, which in my mind is "unwelcome" usage.

We desis have to realize that our habit of extrapolating behaviors of one Gujarati - to be the behavior of all Gujaratis, is wrong.

Even if we say something at the heat of the moment - we should apologize.

Allah/Bhagwan/Uparwala watches all - be respectful. Or be ready for the consequences.

Every person of a group is an individual. Acknowledge them as such - with respect.

As they say in Bengali "Sudhar jao - sudhar hone se paisa nahi lagta". Sorry about my Hindi/Urdu.

Can we use the term 'mulls' for muslims ?
Well depends on context of use of the term.

If it is commonly used as a put-down (not just by you but in general use by society in India), then it is unwelcome.

If it is not a put-down - then all good.

The standard I use is - when you use the term against a person, how they perceive it (welcome or unwelcome).

Respect is always a pre-amble to personal interactions.

For you young guys - I always use one single example.

If there was an attractive young twenty something Muslim girl from Bangladesh (a potential mate for you), could you say "Bong" or "Chaddi" as a slur to her face? Or even "mull"?

That is the standard I'd use for everyone, yes even in a forum like this.

सोच लीजिए एक बार

You see, when you opened this thread, many people voiced opposite view. None of them was Gujarati. That is called soft power. The person who twisted about is Gujarati. When Billa said that he will not allow this racist thread, I as a Gujarati opposed him. That is the difference between people like you and us.
