A senior Bangladeshi military official with close ties to Pakistan has been put under surveillance for allegedly making moves to stage a coup in the Army, sources told India Today. The order was passed by Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman after he got a whiff of moves by Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, a Quarter Master General (QMG), to replace him.

The move comes after the Chief's secretariat was flagged about meetings being called by Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, a known Jamaat sympathiser, without his knowledge.

Sources said these meetings with divisional commanders were being called to gather support against the acting Chief of the Bangladesh Army. However, he failed to receive adequate support.

Lt General Faizur Rahman called a meeting of key divisional commanders (GOCs) in the first week of March. However, the Army Chief's secretariat found out about the meeting and a warning was sent to the top officials. After that, the top officials backed out from the crucial meeting.

In the first two months of 2025, Lt General Faizur Rahman held several meetings with Jamaat leaders and Pakistani diplomats. The Bangladesh Army Chief was flagged about these meetings, after which he became cautious and put him under surveillance.

The development comes at a time when Bangladesh is again witnessing unrest amid a surge in violence, vandalism, and rioting over the last few months.

Recent protests have seen properties linked to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's family being vandalised, including the Dhaka home of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Last month, Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said the political turmoil was behind the rapidly worsening law and order situation in the country. He also asserted the need for unity and discipline within the armed forces.

"The anarchy we have witnessed is of our own making," the Army chief said at an event.
