Combat practice against the Rafale’s and they sent the J-10s. Wonder what the Indians are thinking…..

Ironically, these J10s are within half a mile of US personnel/equipment at Ul Udeid, probably the closest a Chinese aircraft have been that close. I imagine because of that they didn’t maximize their radar potential if they did air to air since easy reach of sensors to understand radar capabilities

Pakistan air force inducts J-10C fighter

Greg Waldron

The Pakistan air force (PAF) has inducted the Chengdu J-10C fighter, becoming the second air force globally to operate the single-engine type.

The fighter will serve with the air force’s No. 15 Sqn, according to a video posted on the PAF’s Facebook page.

An officer in the video notes that No. 15 Sqn scored the first kill in the history of the PAF, and that “when the time comes, being equipped with this aircraft, we’ll be at the forefront in defence of the motherland”.

He adds that as a “4.5-generation” fighter, the type is “unparalleled in the region”, and is equipped with an advanced electronic warfare suite as well as an active electronically scanned array radar.

It is not clear how many J-10Cs Pakistan will obtain, but one squadron contains about 20 fighters. Media reports suggest that about 25 fighters will be acquired. The only other operators of the J-10 are China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force, and its naval air force.

In late January and February, images started emerging on Chinese social medias of J-10Cs bearing PAF markings in the skies over Chengdu, where the jet is produced.

In addition to the Pakistan buy being the first export win for the type, it also marks the first time China has sold an advanced fighter engine overseas. Pakistan’s J-10Cs are powered by the Shenyang WS-10B. Previous versions of the combat aircraft – the J-10A and J-10B – used Russia’s Saturn AL-31F.

No. 15 Sqn, nicknamed the “Cobras” is based at PAF Base Minhas in Northern Pakistan.

The Article will share light on Pakistan Airforce’s latest Platform - The J-10 C/P ; Its Marquee Capabilities, the choice of Power Plant , AESA Radar , Kinematics and Flight envelope and Possible Role.

=================================================

INTRODUCTION :

As per its deployment in PLAAF - The J-10 C is well-optimized for A2A Combat [Both WVR as well as BVR] ; Equipped with High Military Thrust engine , 11 Hard points & A higher-output AESA radar as compared to the JF-17 Block-3.

After the deployments tactics are optimised in next say 2 years - PAF now has an Offensive Asset & Capability that can take on practically any 4.5+ Generation current threat in the air. The PAF can also rapidly scale up the Fleet of J-10 C/P at an affordable Cost, Compared to any competing US/ West or Russian Platform.

THE POWER PLANT DECISION :

PAF was evaluating this bird since its B version and many upgrades were done overtime [Including Valuable insights given by F-16 operating PAF], till it reached to C variant.

However the most critical decision was to use Russian or Chinese engine.

Remember that Thunder has still not switched to Chinese WS-13 engine & future numbers are slated with RD-93MA improved Russian engines reportedly.

-With No official reports available as of now - Closely analyzing the aircraft’s thrust petals, the Pakistani J-10 C/P appears to be powered by the Chinese Shenyang WS-10B power plant -

NOT , the Russian Saturn AL-31F.

-The key visual differences being that the After-burner nozzle petal’s of Taihang WS-10B are much Wider & It has a ‘Ring structure’ around the interior of the nozzle - Both these features not available on Russian AL-31.

THE A.E.S.A RADAR

AVIC - Radar and Electronic Equipment Research Academy under guidance of Mr. Zhang Kunhui (张昆辉, 1963 -) designed the AESA radar for J-10B with its modified Nose.

main-qimg-a7297565a996455bb2ec847300e91e51-lq

The AESA for J-10B was finally developed in 2008 in 08 years. Hence from Mech Steered planar slotted array - directly to AESA, J-10 took a quantum leap by skipping any PESA version.

The NEXT Gen to J-10B Radar incorporating GaN Technology - The Type 14XX NRIET KLJ-10 AESA radar with side looking TR modules is equipped in J-10C China.

main-qimg-d1c762ada016fb4d6c2d6653eee2bb15-pjlq

There are 02 options available in KLJ-10 AESA :

-One with Two Side Facets with a Front Lobe.

  • Second one with Single Front - Facet installation.

-KLJ-7A AESA Hybrid Cooled Radar in JF-17 Thunder Block III has reported ranges of 170 - 180 Kms for a standard fighter sized target RCS of 3–4 sq meter.

-The KLJ-10 AESA of J-10C , having greater TR Modules, Improved Cooling and Heat dissipation , Extra Power available should exceeds the KLJ-7A AESA in Range, Power & SAR by atleast 20%..
