Shahjalal International Airport has launched a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Management Centre (ATMC) to overhaul Bangladesh’s airspace management and enhance aviation safety.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam inaugurated the facility on Monday morning, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) said in a media statement, bdnews24.com reports.

According to CAAB, the project was implemented with technological support from France-based multinational company Thales.

The launch of the ATMC is expected to bring positive changes in the country’s airspace management.

The authority said the new system will improve flight accuracy and punctuality, increase airspace capacity, and significantly reduce safety risks.

With advanced technology, the centre will enable more effective monitoring and control of flights, helping Bangladesh meet international standards.

CAAB also believes the system will contribute to foreign currency earnings and enhance the strategic importance of the country’s airspace.

Speaking at the inauguration, Afroza said: “Today marks a historic milestone in the country’s civil aviation sector. With the introduction of a modern and automated air traffic management system, Bangladesh’s airspace will become safer, more efficient and aligned with international standards.”

She added, “The technology supplied by Thales will significantly enhance airspace management capacity. With continued government initiatives, efforts are underway to transform Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport into a global aviation hub.”

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said, “It will create new opportunities for building integrated airspace management through regional cooperation and information exchange.”

CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mostofa Mahmud Siddique said, “By overcoming long-standing limitations and introducing a state-of-the-art ATM-CNS system, it will be possible to ensure safety, efficiency and international standards.”

French Ambassador Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet said France would continue to support the development of Bangladesh’s aviation sector in the future.

The fact that this development happened is not the noteworthy news.

The fact that Hasina let Kolkata ATC control Bangladesh' air traffic for the last three decades and had them mint millions from the scenario - is what raises my eyebrows. We could've bought and implemented our own ATC ten times over.

Scummy c*nt !! May she rot in h*ll soon!

This happened because of Hasina's India first policy. You are correct that h*ll is Hasina's final destination.

A Chinese joint-venture (JV) company has been assigned to rehabilitate Bangladesh's first longest bridge over the Jamuna River as railway tracks have been withdrawn from there.

The tracks were removed after constructing a dedicated railway bridge on the river last year.

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) and CCCC-CRBC JV signed the contract under the Jamuna Bridge Deck Rehabilitation and Reopening of Abandoned Rail Lane initiative at a ceremony at Setu Bhaban in the capital on Wednesday.

Officials say the joint venture of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) has been assigned to carry out rehabilitation, widening, and capacity enhancement of the 4.8km bridge deck in the next 18 months.

The contract value is Tk 2.78 billion.

BBA Chief Engineer Kazi Md Ferdous and Wang Benqian of CCCC-CRBC JV inked the deal on behalf of their respective organisations.

Senior officials from the Bridges Division, BBA, and representatives of the joint venture attended the programme.

Ferdous said though the contract was signed for 18 months, the JV was requested to complete the main bridge widening work before the next Eid-ul-Fitr so that the entire roadway could be usable during the peak transportation season.

Under the contract, the Chinese companies would carry out various works apart from enhancing the bridge's usability, including widening the toll plaza to increase capacity, he told The Financial Express over the phone.

The Jamuna Bridge was opened in 1998 with the provision of both road and rail transport. The four-lane bridge with a width of 18.5 metres, however, developed cracks.

Experts said cracks had appeared due to vibrations caused by the movement of trains as it was not incorporated at the design stage. Later, the government constructed a separate railway bridge 300 metres upstream, which was inaugurated in March 2025.
