The Know-Nothing Movement was a mid-19th-century American nativist political movement that opposed Catholic immigration and favored native-born citizens over immigrants. Known formally as the American Party or the Native American Party, its members were secretive and would respond "I know nothing" when asked about their political beliefs, which earned them their famous nickname. The movement gained significant popularity in the 1850s but declined after the Kansas-Nebraska Act shifted political focus to the issue of slavery.
