To the outsider, non Indian, it may all seem a little retarded but "cow vigilantism" is but a response to "cow smuggling"

Illegal hai inka slaughter across most of India, but it still happens.

Personally I'm agnostic on the issue, kha bhi leta hu (legal where I am atm) but I also get why its a big deal for a lot of people, so, tameez se rehne ka.

I wouldn't complain if there's no daaru and pork on the menu in Muslim run joints either. Overall but, I doubt this cow thing is on most people's minds when they vote.

Not remotely. But the attempt to paint this as a "Hindu Sikh" thing is malicious and has other connotations which I am sure you are not unaware about.

I am satisfied if you (or the tweeter) simply label this as a gau rakshak vigilantism attempted lynching attempt and leave it there.

There is also no doubt in my mind that had the driver been Muslim, he would probably have been worse off. Even dead.

Which is probably why some impoverished sikhs (there are many, landless even ... reason they are asking him his caste) are making a fast buck smuggling cattle.

But this is all too common. Why do they consider it okay to hurt him even if he wasn't a Sikh?

The other Indian member and I have both answered it in different ways (I've added to my original post).

What he was doing was not only illegal but religiously inflammatory.

Equivalent to someone blaspheming your prophet or Quran or burning or otherwise defiling it in Pakistan.

The action, extra judicial and at the street level, are the same.

We are after all the same people. Same seed stock. Same cauldron of 10,000 year old churned goulash.
