A 15-day residential filmmaking workshop is set to begin in the world's largest mangrove forest and Unesco recognised world heritage – the Sundarbans in Bangladesh.

International Academy of Film and Media (IAFM) organised the workshop, titled, "2nd ECO Film Lab: An International Film Residency program", aimed to focus on environmentally conscious filmmaking and practical skills development.

Starting from March 19, the 15-day event will involve five days of online sessions with global film professionals and ten days of physical lab on-site under the residency mentorship, with participants divided into three groups.

This intensive mentorship programme has been undertaken to amplify sustainable film production practice as well as the Green Filming initiative.

Six to nine participants in three groups will make three short films based on the Sundarbans, centring on human, nature, and climate change thematic approach followed by scriptwriting, project presentation, shooting preparation, and film production. Renowned Indian filmmaker Pushpendra Singh will mentor the aspiring filmmakers.

The editing of the films produced during the workshop will be conducted at the American Film Institute, Lodz Film School, and Don Bosco International Media Academy (DBIMA) in France. Additionally, one filmmaker will be awarded a year-long scholarship for making a feature-film on the Sundarbans.

Two selected individuals will get the opportunity to obtain higher education at the Don Bosco International Media Academy in Paris and the prestigious Raindance Film School London.

Interested participants can register through the International Academy of Film and Media's website and Facebook page.

I've been to the Centrepoint Mall near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The CINEPLEX seems open but about 40% of the store spaces are still empty. But the mall is pretty high standard, all steel and glass and very open in design.
Dhaliwood is far behind than Bollywood. We need to upgrade our film industry to catchup. The high officials of Dhaliwood must work hard to draw private investments which could help in bringing modern technology to our film industry. Interest free loans will encourage our film makers to make big budget movies.

Ilias Javed is the hero of Dhakai cinema’s golden era. He acted in countless superhit films. At the same time, he was also a renowned dance director. Defeated by cancer, this audience-favourite actor passed away today.

His close friend, actor Sohel Rana, spoke to The Daily Star this afternoon about the late actor Javed.

Sohel Rana said, “Most of my contemporaries are no longer alive. Only a few were still living, and actor Javed was one of them. Now he too has gone to the land of no return. After losing Javed, I am left all alone. I have become terribly lonely. It hurts deeply to lose him.”

“He was a very close friend of mine. A very good friend. For decades, our journeys ran parallel in the same field,” he added.

Sohel Rana further said, “Javed was not only an actor. He was also a renowned dance director. He worked as a dance director in many bumper-hit films of this country. He had learned dance from the famous subcontinental dancer Birju Maharaj. That is why many dance directors used to call him ‘Ustad’.”

He said, “Both of us started acting in films around the same time. After 1971, our acquaintance and friendship began. That friendship lasted a lifetime. I cannot fully express how close a friend he was. He was the dance director of many of my films. His work always meant something exceptional. Those works will keep him alive for generations.”

Although actor Javed was Pakistani, he chose to stay in Bangladesh and continued acting and working as a dance director regularly. On this matter, Sohel Rana said, “Javed was not originally a person of this country. Even after being Pakistani, he chose to stay here. I liked him even more for loving Bangladesh and deciding to stay here. Javed loved Bangladesh deeply.”

Sohel Rana said, “Javed loved the Bangla language immensely. I never saw him speak in Urdu. He always spoke in Bangla, and he spoke it beautifully. He considered this country to be his own. For this reason, my love and respect for him increased even more.”
