Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan met his sister and wife for the first time in nine months at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after the country’s Supreme Court allowed weekly family meetings for the jailed leader amid concerns over his health, NDTV reported on Wednesday.

Khan, who is the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party, has been in Adiala Jail since 2023, facing several cases. He is currently serving a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.

His sister, Noreen Niazi, met him for the first time this year for 15 minutes, according to a Dawn report. Quoting jail sources, the Pakistani publication reported that the two met in the jail’s conference room, where they discussed his health and other issues.

Noreen also informed him about the Supreme Court’s earlier order to shift him to Shifa International Hospital for a medical checkup, they added.

More details regarding the meeting were not issued, as the Supreme Court, in its order, had warned the concerned parties that using the meeting for political gain would result in withdrawal of relief granted to Khan.

Khan’s other sisters, including Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan and his cousin Qasim Zaman, were not allowed to meet him. Also, political leaders from his party were barred from the meeting.

Separately, Khan’s jailed wife Bushra Bibi also met with her family on Tuesday in a conference room in the jail. Jail sources told Express Tribune that Khan’s meeting with his wife lasted around 30 to 35 minutes.

Bushra Bibi, also imprisoned at Adiala Jail, met with her family as well. Her meeting with her children Musa and Mubashara Maneka and sister-in-law Mehrunnisa lasted 40 minutes.

Earlier, the top court ordered the government to shift Khan within two days to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment and keep him there till September 16, when the court will again hear petitions for his treatment at a private hospital.

Security personnel cordon off a street outside the Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad on August 20, 2026 after Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered to transfer jailed former prime minister Imran Khan to hospital for medical treatment. Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered on 18 August that Khan be moved to hospital for medical checks, after a petition by his lawyers over claims of poor health. AFP

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was transferred back to jail early on Friday, hours after being taken to a hospital for court-ordered medical checks, the government said.

The Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday that Khan, Pakistan’s most popular politician, be taken to the private Shifa International Hospital in the capital Islamabad within 48 hours for treatment, after his lawyers petitioned the court over concerns that his health was poor.

The ex-cricket captain and his wife Bushra Bibi, who is also his spiritual guide, were both sentenced late last year to 17 years in prison.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X that Khan was instead taken to the public hospital Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, blaming the “security situation” caused by Khan’s supporters at the private clinic.

“A team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a physician, conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit,” Tarar said.

“After the completion of this entire process, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail.”

Tarar also said that Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, who is a medical doctor, was present during the examination.

Hundreds of police, some wielding sticks, were deployed near Shifa International Hospital late on Thursday, with roads leading to the clinic cordoned off ahead of the transfer.

Dozens of the 73-year-old’s supporters had waited outside the hospital.

The former prime minister received eye treatment at PIMS earlier this year, with his family and lawyer saying at the time that he had lost most of the vision in his right eye.

The court had warned against public gatherings on the hospital grounds or the use of information about Khan’s health for political gain, cautioning that any breaches could lead to the order being reversed.

The next court hearing was set for September 16.

Khan was prime minister from 2018 to 2022 before being removed in a no-confidence vote during a political crisis over tensions between his government and the powerful military establishment.

He has since faced multiple legal cases on corruption and other charges, which Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party maintain are politically motivated.

His arrest triggered nationwide protests in May 2023, some of which turned violent and led to hundreds of arrests.

Ending decades of political dominance by dynastic parties, Khan was voted in by millions of Pakistanis who grew up watching him play cricket, where he excelled as an all-rounder and led the nation to a World Cup victory in 1992.

But PTI made little headway improving the country’s finances, with galloping inflation, crippling debt and a feeble rupee undermining economic reform.
