Plans to take Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia to London for advanced medical treatment have become increasingly uncertain.

According to responsible sources, her current physical condition is not yet suitable for air-ambulance travel. In particular, her cardiac complications have reached a significantly critical stage.

In addition, her diabetes, kidney issues, lung-related complications and other chronic conditions remain unchanged. For the time being, she will continue to receive treatment in Dhaka, where she is undergoing daily dialysis.

In this situation, no new initiative has emerged, either from the BNP or from Khaleda Ziaโ€™s family, regarding her potential transfer to London. The process initiated by the Emir of Qatar to send an air ambulance has now been placed on hold.

Meanwhile, Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNPโ€™s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, has been visiting Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on a daily basis to see Khaleda Zia. She went to the hospital at around 3:30 pm on Monday, overseeing aspects of the treatment.

Speaking to Prothom Alo yesterday, BNPโ€™s central health affairs secretary and physician Rafiqul Islam said, โ€œAs a member of Madam Khaleda Ziaโ€™s medical board, Zubaida Rahman has joined the team and is actively supervising Madamโ€™s treatment.โ€

The air ambulance rented for her transfer to London is not arriving immediately. Until yesterday, the BNP had not conveyed to the operators that the aircraft should come to Dhaka, as the decision entirely depends on her medical condition and the medical boardโ€™s approval.

To facilitate Khaleda Ziaโ€™s transfer abroad, the Qatar Emir arranged the rental of an air ambulance from FAI Aviation Group, a Germany-based airline. In accordance with procedure, FAI Aviation applied last Saturday for landing and take-off clearance at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Approval for landing was granted, but the schedule has since changed.

Sources within the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) say that the original application submitted by FAI Aviation sought permission for arrival in Dhaka on Tuesday, with departure for London on Wednesday.

Eighty-year-old Khaleda Zia has long been suffering from a range of critical health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and severe kidney complications.

She was rushed to Evercare Hospital on 23 November after she experienced breathing difficulties. Her treatment is being carried out under the supervision of both local and international specialists forming the medical board.

Physicians continue to consider her condition โ€œcriticalโ€. Their assessment is that the coming days are extremely crucial, and that without stabilisation of her kidney function, achieving any lasting improvement in her overall health will be difficult.

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is responding to treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital as she did in the past, according to her personal physician and BNP leader Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.

Addressing the media outside the hospital on Wednesday night, the BNP standing committee member said the former prime minister continues to receive intensive care treatment at the hospital.

โ€œDoctors are very optimistic about her progress,โ€ Dr AZM Zahid Hossain added, urging all not to pay heed to any rumours on social media regarding her health.

According to UNB, Dr Zahid said local and foreign doctors are working together to ensure the best possible treatment for the former prime minister. โ€œIn medical terms, she is responding to the treatment being given,โ€ he said.

He said there was a plan to airlift Khaleda Zia to the UK last Friday for advanced treatment and an air ambulance arranged by the Emir of Qatar was expected to take her to London.

The physician, however, said this was not possible due to a technical problem with the air ambulance and also because Khaleda was not fit enough to fly at that time.

Dr Zahid said the medical board, which includes specialists from both Bangladesh and abroad, is working to ensure that Khaleda Zia receives all necessary treatment at Evercare Hospital.

He said she may still be taken abroad if required, but it is not possible to say exactly when that might happen. โ€œThe time has not come yet to give a definite date.โ€

Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November and was moved to the Critical Care Unit on 27 November with multiple health complications.

A medical board led by cardiologist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, and including specialists from Bangladesh, the UK, the USA, and China, is supervising her treatment.

Her daughter-in-law, Dr Zubaida Rahman, has been attending the medical boardโ€™s meetings in person since returning to Dhaka.

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia remains in critical condition at Evercare Hospital, where she is on ventilator support and receiving intensive care for multiple serious complications, according to the medical board overseeing her treatment.

In its latest update provided on Thursday, the board said that the former premier is being treated round the clock by a team of local and foreign specialists, as several of her vital organs continue to be under severe stress.

It said over the past few days, several serious complications have been detected.

โ€œHer breathing difficulties increased, her oxygen level fell, and carbon dioxide levels rose. She was treated with High Flow Nasal Cannula and BiPAP support, but as there was no improvement, she was placed on elective ventilator support to give rest to her lungs and other vital organs,โ€ the board said.

On November 27, it said doctors diagnosed acute pancreatitis, which is still being treated.

โ€œDue to severe bacterial and fungal infections, she is receiving advanced antibiotics and antifungal medicines. Her kidney function has stopped completely, and she is undergoing regular dialysis,โ€ the board mentioned.

Owing to gastrointestinal bleeding and a condition called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), it said she is being given blood and blood products as required.

โ€œAs her fever persisted and echocardiography showed issues in the aortic valve, a Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) was performed. It confirmed infective endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart valve. Treatment for this has been started according to international guidelines,โ€ the physicians said.

The also said the multidisciplinary medical board, led by cardiologist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, said specialists from Bangladesh and abroad are continuously monitoring her and providing every possible treatment.

The board urged all concerned not to circulate speculation or misinformation about her condition and to respect her privacy and dignity.โ€œOur medical team is working with the highest level of care, attention and sincerity.โ€

The medical board and Khaleda Ziaโ€™s family have requested everyone to pray for her recovery.

Khaleda Zia has long been suffering from a number of chronic and complex health problems, including liver complications, kidney disease, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis and recurring infections.

While staying at her Gulshan residence recently, she developed shortness of breath, cough, fever and increased weakness.

As her condition worsened, she was admitted to Evercare Hospital on 23 November. Following tests, doctors found a rapid deterioration in the functions of her lungs, heart and kidneys.

She was immediately shifted from a cabin to the Critical Care Unit for advanced treatment and close monitoring.

The health condition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia remained unchanged on Friday, with she receiving intensive care at the ICU of Evercare Hospital in the capital Dhaka.

Neither the BNP nor the medical board overseeing her treatment issued any update on her condition on Friday, but a senior party leader said that nothing significant โ€” positive or negative โ€” had happened regarding her health condition over the past 24 hours.

On December 11, the medical board stated that she continued to receive intensive treatment in the ICU, with all necessary medical interventions being administered at the highest standard appropriate for her critical condition.

According to the board, her kidney function has deteriorated, requiring regular dialysis. Complications from digestive tract bleeding have necessitated multiple blood transfusions, and she continues to suffer from persistent fever.

In a statement issued on behalf of the medical board, Professor Dr Shahabuddin Talukdar said that Khaleda Ziaโ€™s oxygen levels had fallen and carbon dioxide levels had risen, requiring support through high-flow nasal cannula and BiPAP machines.

As her condition did not improve, she was placed on elective ventilator support to rest her lungs and other organs, the statement said.

Khaleda was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis on November 27, which remains under intensive management, the December 11 update said.

The board also reported that she was battling severe bacterial and fungal infections, requiring advanced antibiotic and antifungal therapy.

Her kidney failure has made regular dialysis essential, while digestive tract bleeding and disseminated intravascular coagulation have required continuous transfusions of blood and blood products.

Persistent fever prompted doctors to conduct a trans-oesophageal echo, which confirmed infective endocarditis.

The 79-year old leader, who has long been suffering from multiple chronic health complications, including liver and kidney disease, heart ailments, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and recurrent infections, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23.

Earlier, on December 10, her personal physician, AZM Zahid Hossain, said that her ongoing treatment was consistent with standard medical protocols and that she had been responding to the interventions.

He said that the medical board had decided on December 5 to transfer her abroad for further treatment, but technical issues with the air ambulance and concerns over her fitness to fly prevented the transfer.

The medical board, which includes national experts and international experts from the United Kingdom and the United States โ€” including specialists from Johns Hopkins and Mount Sinai โ€” and Australia, continues to monitor her condition closely.

Zahid said that options for overseas treatment remained under consideration should her condition permit.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday said national leader, three-time former Prime Minister, one of the leading figures of democratic politics and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is an integral part of an important chapter in Bangladesh history.

"As you know, the national leader, three-time former Prime Minister of the country, one of the leading figures of democratic politics and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is currently in the hospital in a critical condition. This is a matter of concern for all of us," he said.

While addressing the nation on Tuesday evening, Prof Yunus said the interim government has been giving utmost importance to Begum Khaleda Zia's health issues since the beginning.

"Considering her unwavering commitment to the independence, sovereignty and democracy of Bangladesh, her contribution to the development of the country and the people's respectful feelings towards her, the government has already declared her as a VVIP," he said.

The government is providing all necessary assistance to ensure her treatment, respecting the wishes of the family.

In addition to her treatment in the country, all matters, including advanced medical treatment abroad, if necessary, are being considered, Prof Yunus said.

After assuming office, he said, the interim government has given utmost importance to three issues - the trial of the July-August massacre, the necessary fundamental reforms of the state structure for the transition to an accountable and effective democratic system, and a fair election.

The trial of the massacres committed by the then fascist government during the July Uprising is proceeding in due legal process. The verdict of one case has already been announced by the tribunal.

The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the head of the fallen fascist government, to death for being the main instigator of the indiscriminate killings of students, workers and the general public of the country, through an independent and transparent evidence-based trial process.

As part of the due legal process, he said the government has formally requested the Indian government to return Hasina, who has been absconding since the uprising, and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, another accused convicted in this case, to the country.

Prof Yunus said a number of institutional and structural reforms have already been completed.

Dozens of old laws have been amended, and several new laws have been enacted,he sThe biggest step in the reforms is the July National Charter. It has been issued in the form of an order to ensure fundamental constitutional reforms.

"Dear people of the country, I have come before you today with a very heavy heart. On this joyous day, I inform you with deep sorrow that the recent attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, a frontline fighter of the July Uprising, is not just an attack on an individual-it is an attack on the existence of Bangladesh, an attack on our democratic path," he said.

Sharif Osman Hadi is currently undergoing treatment in a critical condition.

The government has taken all necessary measures to ensure his treatment and safety, Prof Yunus said.

He has already been sent to Singapore for better treatment. "Please pray to Almighty Allah for him from the bottom of your hearts."

"The government is taking this incident very seriously. Those involved in the incident have been initially identified," the Chief Adviser said.

"I want to assure the countrymen that no one involved in this conspiracy, no matter where they are, will be spared," he mentioned.

Dr. Zahid Hossain briefs on Khaleda Zia's health condition in front of Evercare Hospital in the capital on 18 October, 2025 Prothom Alo

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Ziaโ€™s physical condition remains stable, according to AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the medical board overseeing her treatment and a member of the BNP standing committee.

Asked by journalists whether there had been any improvement in Khaleda Ziaโ€™s health following treatment over the past few days, Zahid said, โ€œYou can say that her condition is stable.โ€

Zahid Hossain shared the update while briefing newspersons on Khaleda Ziaโ€™s health in front of Evercare Hospital in the capital on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking about her condition, the physician said Khaleda Zia has been responding to treatment being provided by both local and foreign physicians.

Physician Zahid Hossain said, โ€œHer (Khaleda Ziaโ€™s) physical condition is being maintained as it was a few days ago, Alhamdulillah.โ€

He added that the physicians are hopeful Khaleda Zia will gradually recover.

Since 23 November, Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Her medical care is being managed under a board of physicians comprising local and foreign specialists, led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukdar.

Khaleda Zia is facing multiple health complications, including diabetes, kidney, heart, and lung problems. Her hemoglobin levels had dropped due to kidney issues but have now improved slightly. Kidney function has also shown some improvement, and her lungs have recovered to some extent. However, she is still not completely out of danger. As part of her ongoing treatment, regular medical tests and examinations are being conducted.

Amid Khaleda Ziaโ€™s health condition, the BNP had suggested sending her abroad for advanced treatment, but that was ultimately not possible. As the chairpersonโ€™s health is not suitable for air travel, she is receiving treatment within the country.

Since arriving in Dhaka from London to see her mother-in-law Khaleda Zia last Friday, Zobaida Rahman, wife of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, has been visiting Evercare Hospital daily. She is currently involved with the medical board overseeing Khaleda Ziaโ€™s treatment.
