I've heard for a while that gair mazhabis are prominent in Iran, but must keep up appearances, or else danda will be do to them. Plenty faithful Shi'ite there too.

Another thing to keep in mind is 'cultural mazhabiness', I put myself in that category. Dharmi in name only, no rules following, no lifestyle living, borderline atheist, kinda spiritual.. good thing we have a category for that in our ancient texts.. there are many many atheistic schools in our tradition. I guess I'd fit right into one of them, details nahi pata, nor care about
