Here's an image of the Long March-2F rocket carrying the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft—one of China’s crewed missions to space. While it's not an exact copy of a Russian rocket, the design and technology of both the rocket and spacecraft draw significant inspiration from Russian systems, especially the Soyuz program.

What You’re Seeing in the Photo

Is It a Copy of a Russian Rocket?

Shenzhou Spacecraft

  • The Shenzhou spacecraft was heavily influenced by Russia’s Soyuz design—it has the same three-module configuration (descent, orbital, service).

  • In 1995, China signed a technology transfer agreement with Russia that included life-support systems, docking mechanisms, and spacesuits.

  • That said, China has modernized the design—Shenzhou is larger and includes added features like independent thrusters and separate solar panels.

Long March-2F Rocket

  • The Long March-2F is a domestic Chinese design derived from the Long March-2E, but has been upgraded for crewed flights—improved safety systems, structural reinforcements, and a launch escape system.

  • It's not a direct copy of a Russian rocket, though it benefits from earlier cooperation and shared technological insights.

What Experts and Space Enthusiasts Say

Reddit users often highlight that Chinese spacecraft bear a striking resemblance to Soyuz in appearance—but they've evolved with modernized enhancements:
"their spacecraft looks exactly like the 60s soyuz 😅"
"It’s a ‘copy’ only in the broadest sense… overall shape and function"

Great India. congratulate! Only launch 100 rockets. But the failure rate exceeds that of China.

The rocket technology in India comes from TOT in Russia. That's why India's rocket failure rate is higher than China's.

Indians are great. Only launch 100 rockets. But the number of failures exceeds that of China.

How unfortunate for you that inspite of these much efforts, what you could come up with was 11 failure out of which atleast 4 test were experimental flights like SLV, 3, SSLV first flight, GSLV 2 initial flights. Your 3 years failure can easily surpass all failure of ISRO' todate.

Over 430 foreign satellites launched successfully without a single failure. Not a cup of tea of copy cat thieves.
