F7 fighter jets: Origins and capabilities

The F7 BGI is a Chinese-manufactured fighter jet and the most advanced version of the F7 series, modelled after the Soviet-era MiG-21.

It is known in China as the Chengdu J7.

From the outset, the F7 fighter jets have been included in the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) fleet.

These aircraft are used for air-to-air combat, air-to-ground attack, training, and patrol missions.

The F7 is a Chinese-made single-engine lightweight and agile fighter jet that has been used by air forces in many countries.

Its development was originally intended to meet the operational needs of China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Though production of the F7 series ended in May 2013, countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Egypt continue to use the aircraft.

The F7 is an all-weather interceptor, capable of operating in any weather condition. Its delta-shaped wings allow it to achieve rapid climb rates and supersonic speeds.

However, due to its limited range, the aircraft is most effective for point-defense missions (defense in limited areas).

The F7 BGI is the most advanced version in the Chinese F7 series. It was specially upgraded for the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF).

Bangladesh acquired these jets as a temporary solution until modern single-engine multirole fighter aircraft were added to its fleet.

This version was the last produced unit in the J7 series, and its final unit was delivered to Bangladesh in 2013.

Compared to earlier versions, the F7 BGI features significant upgrades in the cockpit.

Two Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) were added. It includes Hands On Throttle And Stick (HOTAS) technology, which offers the pilot greater control.

A new Heads-Up Display (HUD) had also been installed. Helmet-Mounted Sights (HMS) and night vision gear were also integrated for the pilots.

Additionally, it included a moving map GPS and advanced navigation and bombing systems.

For pilot safety, the Martin-Baker Mk.10 ejection seat was used.

An F7 BGI fighter jet of the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into a school building today in Uttara, Dhaka, with the cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

At least 20 people, many of them students, have died in the crash, with over 150 injured.

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have called for a proper investigation into the tragic fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College.

In a statement issued by the party, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Tarique expressed her condolences and urged everyone to stand by the families of those died and injured in the incident.

In the statement, Khaleda and Tarique have instructed leaders and activists of all BNP units and affiliated organisations to extend their full support to the victims' families.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi raised questions over the use of such a densely populated area for flight training.

Speaking to reporters at Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital, the BNP leader said, "This is a densely populated area. It seems mysterious to me that training aircraft are allowed to operate in such a setting."

Meanwhile, BNP announced that special prayers and doa mahfils will be held across the country, including in Dhaka.

This makes no fukking sense at all.

What on earth can an F-7 do against anyone other than like talibunny or Sudani tribals down south near da Congo border bhai?

Is Bangladesh really this isstoopid to keep investing in traditional legacy military like Pakistan?

We know Pakistan and AL-Turkiya are chutiya muzlim no? with zero capabilities........Why is Bangladesh also becoming chutiya?

This makes no sense no?
No govt. in Bangladesh is interested in improving our air force for the reason best known to them. Khaleda Zia, Sheikh Hasina and now Dr.Yunus all are guilty of neglecting our air force. BAF is pressing the govt. for so many years for multirole aircraft but no govt. has shown slightest interest in procuring modern aircraft for them. These basta*d politicians of Bangladesh won't do anything that could irritate India. They are all basta*d sons and daughters of India.

Idiotic third world junk PAF started retiring all F-7's and mostly all our singles seater Mirage III/ V junk fighters. a decade ago now realizing they are not only flying coffins but also cannon fodder.

You can't fly a jet after 25 years into service.......So stupid these third world countries.

Our F-16 junky fighters are next to go into the scrap heap.

We parked 40 of our survivor F-7p 'flying Skybolt coffins' at Mianwali AFB a few years ago because they had become confirmed flying coffins.

TTP jahil pashto terrorists attacked that airfield and immediately destroyed 17 mothballed airframes with RPG/ AK fire and severely damaged the rest of them too. After they were done destroying them by throwing grenades in their intakes and exhausts, 34 were seen burning and reduced to burnt out wreckage hulks.

This is how the F-7P Skybolt flying coffin chapter ended for Pakistan.

Absolutely shameful end to a shameful aircraft in PAF service.

Guys - we are so quick to blame obsolete cheaper aircraft (somewhat warranted I admit in this case) but all aircraft must be properly maintained and kept up, these are precision machines. In South Asia, our aircraft maintenance is not the absolute best. That is why they fall out of the sky.

What we have in the Bangladesh air force is what I call 'hammer' mechanics, uneducated stupid idiots whose only training and claim to fame is maintaining aircraft with none other than large hammers and larger wrenches.

How many mechanics are well-educated ASME-certified engineers like in the West? Zero. Even auto mechanics in the West must be ASME certified and must pass training tests with rigorous training regimes. OF course they get paid very well.

How many educated families will send their kids to be trained as mechanics?

That should be more the focus, not ONLY buying super advanced aircraft. Can't put the cart before the horse.

Maintenance is highly ignored, when it should be a number one prerogative.

BAF has an overhauling plant to overhaul F-7 jet fighters. So, maintenance is not the issue. The technology of this plane is obsolete. No amount of maintenance is enough to keep it fly worthy. China doesn't even produce spares for F-7 anymore. They have shut down the factory.
